Title: NHL Smack Talk 09-10
Post by: DionJL on September 21, 2009, 09:17:25 AM
Ok guys I'd like to keep all the bragging, bickering, etc. in this one thread rather than have to deal with 3 threads per day when the Leafs lose, the Canucks win, and a Trade happens. Lets keep it all in one spot.

I accidentally removed Chris' topic about "The Saviour". Sorry for that. If you'd like to re-post go right ahead, but do it in this thread.

I'll start it off. Here is TSN's Pre-Season standings on predicted outcomes this season. The release the team names one each day. Toronto's name came up a while ago, but we're still waiting to see where Vancouver places. See I don't need to say the Leafs suck because TSN will say it for me. ;D

In a long conversion with Matts  ;D ;D the other day we have decided to hang them up. He says it was a great carreer with his only regret was not retiring before joining the hapless Canucks. ;D ;D

He also added he now wishes he had listened to me. ;D ;D ;D

Please thank him from the bottom of my heart for not taking the two year contract the Canucks offered him!  Boy, that would have been disasterous for the Canucks.....a 10 million contract would have destroyed any chances the team would have had to get under the cap and retain the players that should make the Canucks a stronger team.

His able body replacement, Shirokov, will give the Kessler line the much needed speed that Sundin was unable to muster last year due to his extensive layoff before signing last year.  That being said, Sundin with the superb carreeer he's had (except last year) should be a shoe in for the Hall of Fame.

Chris....I might just be able to score you a couple of tickets when the Leafs come to town.   I'll keep you posted.

Being a Canucks fan I will say I was a little frustrated watching the first period of tonights game, but after that I became certain that no matter the outcome of tonights game, the Canucks are sure to be a force throughout the season.

As for the Leafs (I watched that game too), I thought the game to be decently exciting and thing Chris and Rhino and Mojo will have a fun team to watch lose this year. They've got exciting rookies (really like the play of Stalberg), speed, and size, they just have no experience.

I am confident that the leafs will finish between 6th and 8th place in the east.Would you like to bet on that?$20 bucks and a honey hole? :D I don't think the leafs will get more points then the canucks. I do have tickets to the game oct 24th and look forward to seeing a tough night for nucks!!perhaps even a LOSS!

Nope its an 82 game schedule. Lots of games to play. Luongo starts out slow every year. Dont you remember the 9 game losing streak they had last year? How did they do last year? Oh ya they made the playoffs unlike the Leafs LOL

Our hands are not on the panic button yet. BTW The Leafs lost their first two games so far. Not like they are flying out of the gate themselves LOL

Bad officiating once again and a goal that was put in by a high stick. :o >:( ::)

However the good news was we were the best team on the ice. Got to go on a conference call now, I hate these long distances calls, but my contraact pays well and I have not been fired after signing on as an advisor in the late forties. ;D ;D I think they want me to come to Toronto  ;D ;D but the fishing is not as good there but do they floss in Ontario? :-X

Its always the refs that screw the Laughs hey Chris LOL

It may have been a high stick BUT all the video replays could not clearly display that it was. In this case since it was not clear the call on the ice stands. Thats just the way it is. Even the commentators agreed with it. Come on its not always the refs LOL

On another note Luongo told me today that he took a cold shower and feels rejuvenated and ready to be back to his old self.  Tomorrow night you will see the REAL ROBERTO!!!

GO SENS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lol in all seriousness... that Ottawa/Toronto game SHOULD have been WAY out of hand. Tornoto's new goalie is a monster and held them in the game big time.
Loved the dangle that Alfie pulled on him though... made him look like a fish up on the sand being kicked around  ;D
And I agree with the high stick goal... I like the "call on the ice rule." Even being an Ottawa fan I would say it was over the bar, tough luck  8)

Just a friendly reminder of where the Canucks will be in 6 months time...

Dan - his team 1 year ahead of the Canucks in rebuilding  ;)

I'll throw in my 2 cents now, because what is happening will probably not continue for much longer, so here goes.

How 'bout those LA Kings. Or should I say those Pacific division leading, longest current winning streak, twice as many points as the Cannots and Laughs combined LA Kings. ;)

This is our year. LA KINGS = STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS

Why not? Their defense to a crappy team is always something funny. Its things like " we are rebuilding " or " were going through a youth movement " well how long can a fan be patient? Why not just say what it is. We have a crappy team with nothing to look forward to. Unless they make some serious moves to get better we are going to stink now and later.

When the Canucks were just brutal us as fans were very hard on them and most of us would tell it like it is. Its just funny how Leafs fans are always defending the organization. What has the organization done for you fans to make you go and pay those outrageous prices for tickets? Atleast if they put out a competitive team every year they could justify those prices but they cant.

some fans defend, but i really do think that we got to stink before they become great and learn how to win with our young players. also , I dont know which Leafs fans you are referring too, but most leaf fans are brutally tough on the teams and players. not sure if you have lived in toronto and attended any leaf games in toronto but if you did you would know that they are a harsh bunch. on this thread, sometimes in smack talk we may be defending but thats not necessarily what we are thinking. None the less I love the LEAFS for a lot more reasons then just how many playoffs and wins they get. but a win anytime soon would be nice. ;) ;D maybe Oct 24th...

Or my personal favorite, that my Leafs fans friends always brings up, the Stanley Cups the Leafs have won. Now granted it is a storied past, but as I like to point out to them it ALL happened before we were even born. In fact it's well before any of us were even an idea. What really shows how much in denial Leafs fans can be is the fact that if I mention the Cowboys Superbowls of the nineties I'm living in the past, yet there doesn't seem to be a problem with '67 or prior. In no way is this any kind of attack on leafs fans on the board, just my 2 cents. ;)

well said. when the leafs won cups and the majority of the Montreal's too was when there was only 6 or so teams in the league. That usually gets brought up when someone says"when was the last time the leafs were in the playoffs?" and the response is "how many cups has your team won?"

how many have the canucks won anyhow?? :P ::) ;D :D

Hanging your hat on a cup won almost 100 years ago by a completely different team is almost as bad as what the Leafs fans preach.  ;D

The 'Nucks may not have won a Cup but atleast they've put up a competative team in the past decade, winning their conference 3 times. Toronto's won thier conference once in the same time frame. I'd rather cheer for a team that wins now than a team that won way back then. LOL

Dion nailed it!!

Watching a team thats competitive is what its all about. The Leafs have not been competitive in a very long time. Sportsnet held a poll today about Toronto sports team. The question was Which Toronto team is reeling the most?
a) Leafs
b) Argos
C) Raptors
d) Blue Jays

It was an overwhelming response with over 50% going to the Leafs.

I hate to burst your bubble Bryan and Dion but i think it's time for a little dose of reality. Now the friends I have that are leafs fans are pretty bad, but my friends who are Canucks fans take the cake. Now obviously growing up here I have alot of friends who are Canuck fans, and who, like yourselves, believe the Canucks put out a competitive team and have a chance to win the cup every year, but do they really? I mean yes they have moments that certainly warrent thinking like that but look at the big picture.(And if your saying they're competitive by comparing them to the Leafs well then that's not saying much. I think we as a group could compete with the Leafs) Now I could be wrong here but with the exception of an amazing, though improbable run in '82 (which at the time I was a big Canuck fan. Gradin was my favorite Canuck) and a great run in '94 which they really should have won, they have never made it past the second round in their entire history. Never. So how exactly are they a competitive team. Is it because they have won a couple of first in the the division over the last handful of years? Come on, we all know that's just window dressing and what everybody really wants is playoff success; specifically a Stanley Cup. And that my friends the Canucks just don't  accomplish. Again I'm certainly not trying to offend anyone, and I admire your passion for your team (for a long time I was silly enough to believe, and still do, that Dallas is going to win another SuperBowl) it's just my 2 cents. That and the fact I like arguing with Canuck fans. ;)

I will have a pre game meeting with the squad that will help seal a win. ;D ;D

You had several conference calls and how did it turn out ? ;D The Leafs might have a chance if you were on the roster. I think I'll give Coach Wilson a call. :) :)

Your not quite getting it.

If you go to a Canucks game you know they have a chance to win every night. If you buy Leafs tickets your pretty much praying for a win as most nights they will lose and wont have a prayer at winning. Its not just playoff success its success during the regular season as well. Its what gives you hope. Without success in the regular season their is no hope and not very entertaining.

Totally agree with BB's comments.  As a staunch supporter of the Canucks, I, like the majority of Canuck fans feel there's always a chance that Vancouver has a good chance of success because of whose on the team and the way they play but I doubt anyone would bet the farm they will win the Cup. However, their chances in a 30 team league appear to be better than most of the teams.  Put it this way I'd rather cheer for a team that can win its dividion than one who is at the bottom of the heap most years in theirs.

Also, when the Canucks play poorly I have no problem calling a spade a spade which from what I've seen in this town is the norm.  We're not blind and we don't hide our feelings.  And just because we tend to give them crap every now and then when things don't go our way doesn't mean we've taken a single step off the band wagon.  Of course, I'm only speaking of the tried and true fans who follow the team day in and day out.

I do get what your saying, I guess I just see things differently. The first thing we should do is take the leafs right out of the equation. You, I, and (whether they'll admit to it or not) Leafs fans all know they are not a good team. So as far as current success they just isn't a comparison to be made. From my point of view, unless there is a trophy for winning the league (like English football) then the only real purpose of the league is seeding for the playoffs. And yes I am aware of the presidents trophy, and I realize it is an accomplishment, I just don't put much stock in. Would any true fan say well we didn't win the Stanley Cup, but who cares cause we won the Presidents trophy? If the Canucks win one game then yes you get the momentary elation, but your more concerned about where it puts you in the division/conference. I would question the overall competitiveness of a team like the Canucks who usually do quite well in the league and set themselves up well only to fail miserable on a consistent basis. Where is the competitiveness in the playoffs when it really counts. I don't expect, nor am I trying to sway you, to see things my way, it's just the way I see things. Put it this way, A couple of years back Dallas went 13-3 in the league and were penciled in for a SuperBowl trip. They ended up losing in the first round, and as far as I'm concerned it was not a successful year. I can't tell you how many division titles they've won, but I sure know they've won 5 Superbowls. That's the point I was trying to make. We might just have to agree to disagree on this one. And speaking of football, get your picks in if you haven't already.

Mind you with these 2 teams they might somehow combine for a double loss. ;D At least my Kings won their last game. I hate it when the Canucks try to protect third period leads, especially when you know the other team, a team without a win, is going to press.  Almost always comes back to bite you in the arse!  They played in their end the whole third period.   Good thing Luongo was on his game tonight.

his had to be H. Sedin's worst game in the last few years....he couldn't do a thing out there. One the other side of the coin, once again Kessler, Grabner, and especially Raymond shows how speed kills!  They were in on all 3 goals.

We'll take the win but I don't think Vigneault will be happy with the team's overall play.

Nice to see the Canucks put in a solid 60 minutes of hockey against the Oilers.  The PK was stellar tonight! As was Luongo, who with the shutout, eclipses Kirk McLean for the most shutouts (21) in Canucks history.  FIve in a row at home without a loss...just need to keep it going on the road.

Raymond draws more penalties than almost anybody in the league.  That happens when you're one of the fastest, if not THE fastest guy in the league.  Don't believe there's anyone on the Leafs that can hang with him so they have no choice to hook, hold, or trip him or in Toronto's case hit him in the face with a stick to contain him.  Too bad he doesn't have Ovechkin's scoring touch.  He'd be good for 50 per year with the number of chances he's able to muster.

I did live in LA for a little while, but that's not the reason. I was a big Gretzky fan growing up and when he went to LA I followed him. After he left LA I just stuck with the KINGS for some reason. ( I honestly couldn't tell you why) They have been my team ever since. I'm not a huge hockey fan so I don't follow like I do the Cowboys, but I always root for them. It just so happens right now they're the hottest team in the NHL so I'm a little more vocal about my support. And when they win the CUP this year......

I think it was obvious for those who watched tonights game that the momentum completely changed after the Johnson incident. Most of the Canucks had the welfare of their teammate in mind moreso than finishing the game.

I must say I was impressed by the sportsmanship shown by the Detroit players on the scene when Johnson fell. One was calling for help from the bench and Brad May dropped his gloves and was by Johnson's side immediately. Thumbs up to the Detroit players.

Title: Things just got worse for Canuck fans
Post by: SMo007 on October 28, 2009, 03:51:56 PM
From TSN

The Vancouver Canucks may have dodged a bullet as the team learned Wednesday that netminder Roberto Luongo is only expected to miss about a week's worth of action after suffering a hairline fracture in his ribs.

Luongo originally suffered the injury during this past Saturday's victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs where the Montreal native made 35 saves.

"It was a bad angle shot from (Leafs' forward Niklas) Hagman in the corner and I just kind of went one knee down and the puck just hit me in the seam of my chest protector," Luongo told reporters following Canucks' practice Wednesday.  "It kind of hurt, but the adrenaline was going so I finished the game."

He appeared to aggravate the injury in Tuesday's loss to the Red Wings during a second period collision with Todd Bertuzzi.

While Luongo was able to complete the game, he did allow four third period goals and did not speak to the media following the loss.  He was also noticeably absent from the ice at Canucks' practice on Wednesday, but he did speak to reporters afterwards and remains optimistic towards a quick return.

"There is no definite timeline, because it's really about the amount of pain that you've got there," Luongo said. "I'm definitely not playing these next two games."

Hottest team is Colorado at 9-1-2

Who would have guessed the Av's would be 9-1-2 to start the year.  SMo007 just like you are a Kings fan I am an Avs fan. I was always a huge Joe Sakic fan. I however am a stronger Canucks fan as they are my home team. Nice to see the Avs doing well though.
Title: Disgruntled Leaf fan sells loyalty to highest bidder on Ebay
Post by: mastercaster on October 28, 2009, 04:48:11 PM
A loyal Toronto Maple Leafs fan his entire life, Lee Kirby's frustrations with the franchise reached their zenith this month as they struggled to the worst start in team history. So he finally decided to put a price on that loyalty: Placing his "allegiance up for the highest bidder" on eBay, and vowing to ditch the Leafs for whatever team the winner chose for him.

"I will remove all Leaf Memorabilia from my home and replace it with the team of choice of the winning bidder. I will root for my ‘new team' whenever they are on TV.  I will argue with the guys at work that my new team is the best," wrote Kirby. "The best part for me is now I can laugh at the Maple Laughs."

The bidding for "Very Used Toronto Maple Leafs fan" began at 1 cent. After 13 bids, Kirby's fan loyalty was sold for just $25 Canadian (US $23.48).

"I'm a Leafs fan. I'm surprised I got that much, really," said Kirby, who promptly forwarded the payment to the Southlake Regional Cancer Center project in Newmarket, Ontario, which was the benefactor for this auction.

What was Kirby's new favorite team? Had his worst fear been realized, with a Montreal Canadiens fan winning the bid and damning him to a lifetime of indentured servitude to his hated rivals?

Nope. Turns out winning bidder, Chris Dawson, is a Dallas Stars fan; and now, so is Lee Kirby, for life.

Personally, that sounds like a lot of money to me! :D

In regards to Luongo's injury ....could have been a lot worse!  Raycroft was due for a game anyway.  Everyone just expected it to be the tail end of back to back games. Maybe by the time Luongo is back so will Salo and Hansen.  Also heard that Daniel is healing ahead of schedule, as well.  Johnson's concussion is anybodies' guess...that, too, could have been a LOT LOT worse!

What's with you and the Colorado teams, are you from there. Are you an old "Colorado Rockies" fan from away back when. I have no idea why but I used to like their uni's. And I think even if you didn't like the Av's, but were any kind of hockey fan, you were a Sakic fan. Great player and class act. I was a Big Yzerman fan as well as Gretzky so I was always cheering for the Wings in those epic series. And as for the Avs being the hottest team, once we dispose of the Canucks we'll be coming for the Av's. ;)

Your right. Outside Canada most people dont care about Hockey. Except some European countries of course but even them care more about soccer. Americans dont care about hockey thats for sure ( for the most part ) Amercans are watching football, baseball, basketball and Nascar as well as all the college versions. Hockey wont even crack the top 10. Heck its not even broadcast on ESPN1...

Makes you wonder about Gary Bettman and his plan to expand into non hockey cities such as Phoenix, Florida, Columbus etc. I hear the Phoenix franchise is projecting a loss of upwards to $60 million a year. The new owner who wants to keep the team in Phoenix must have more money than brains. ::) ::)

Last season when I watched games outsie of Vancouver, especially the ones in the States the broadcasters mentioned several times during these away games how many Vancouver jerseys they noticed in the stands.  it seems year after year there must be more transplanted Vancouverites.  My wife caught the game in Phoenix when she was down there visiting and she said it seemed like half the stands were cheering for the Canucks, most of them wearing Vancouver colours.

Funny you say that cause the were talking about that very thing on the radio. They were saying the snowbirds from Vancouver are in heaven. They have no cold or rain to deal with and they can get 2 seats at center ice for $10. That's if they even have to pay for tickets as so many people/companies are giving them away.

Same radio program as above, they said since they moved to Pheonix, 12-13 years ago, the franchise has LOST $360 million dollars. They also said if you think they'll be in Pheonix beyond this year, maybe next year but highly doubtful, they have a bridge to sell you. ;)

I'm guessing he'll be gone for at least 2-3 weeks. Not to get anyone worried but it's time for the team to step up and win some for the Captain. Hopefully Schneider can shine! Go Canucks Go!

Well so far one goal against a high scoring L.A. team is not very many!  Raycroft certainly earned his salary tonight...all $500 g's per year divided by 82.  Garret kept saying the Canucks played the perfect "rope a dope" game tonight.  Kess called it a "greasey" road win.

Can't believe Raymond wasn't awarded another shoot out attept after Quick knocked the net off its moorings before he took the shot!  What's up with that??

Sounded like a home game for Vancouver.  A ton of Canuck fans in attendance outcheering the L.A. fans.

It certainly wasn't pretty, but the Canucks did exactly what they needed to do to win last night. You can say whatever you want about their style of play, but they got the 2 points and that's all that really matters.

I guess I'm not like some Canuck fans (not directed at anyone) who moan and cry everytime their team loses because the ref this or the other team that, or whatever excuse they come up with. On paper, because of the number of injuries to key guys, and the fact they were badly outshot, if they played a "normal" game they probably would have gotten beaten. But they changed things up and played a game that gave them a chance to win, and they did.  I'm just simply giving credit where credit is due. I still don't like them, but that doesn't stop me from being honest.

Failing to capitalize on three glorious chances to score to go up 3 zip will probably cost the Canucks 2 points tonight.  That third goal that either Glass, Grabner, or Kessler should have had would have made the Ducks all but go away.  Instead they stopped playing with urgency.  Then Mike Brown burns the Canucks with a short handed goal to totally change the momentum of the game.  Can't blame Raycroft on any of the goals he was scored on.

Lot of goats on the Canucks tonight making poor per centage plays has also been the difference.  Hopefully Vigneault chewed them out but good and they can come out and play a stronger third period.

Maybe if the Canucks can have a few 5 on 3's like the Ducks gave the Leafs we can pull this out of the hat! LOL

I have to completely agree with you on that one. I cheered for the Oilers as a kid, and lived in Edmonton for 7 years as an adult and I don't know a single person that cheered for both. Most people in Edmonton can't stand the Flames, or even Calgary for that matter. And now I do alot of business in Calgary and am there every month, I hear the exact same thing said about Edmonton and the Oilers. And it also applies to the Esks and Stamps. Nothing against you personally rhino, your just the only person I know who likes both. To each his own.

You lost all credibility when you said you liked both the Oilers and the Flames. Not one Oilers fan is a Flames fan or vice versa its impossible they hate one another. Probably as much as a Leafs fan hates a Habs fan or vice versa if not more. ;)

read the post...it says BEFORE i MOVED to COW TOWN i kinda liked the oil.not i like them both!! you lost credibility in being able to read and understand a post! :P ;)

One cold winter day a couple of kids were playing hockey on Lake
Ontario and a vicious dog ran up and started biting one of the
kids' legs. Thinking fast the other kids took his hockey stick
and started beating the dog until it was dead.
A news reporter for the Toronto Sun was walking by and saw the
entire incident and came runny up to the kids. He pulled out his
memo book and starts writing: "Little Leafs fan saves boy from
vicious dog." The boy said, "I'm not a Leaf fan."
The reporter said, "Oh since you lived in Toronto I just figured
you were," and crosses out what he had written and started to
write again: "Little Blue Jays fan saves boy from vicious dog."
And again the boy said, "I'm not a Blue Jay's fan."
The reporter thinks for a minute and said, "Oh since you live in
Toronto I figured you were either a Jays fan or a Leafs fan, who
do you cheer for?" The boy replied, "I'm a Habs fan." So the
reporter flipped to a different page and started to write:
"Little French bastard kills beloved family pet."

Here is a little math for you Laughs fans.

Over the past four seasons (post lockout) the 8th ranked eastern conference team has on average needed 93 points to make the playoffs. The Leafs have played 13 games and have 7 points. With 69 games to go the Leafs would need to win 40 and lose 6 in OT (40-23-6).

I hear Burke's already made a tee-time for April.

Dear Mr Burke and Coach Wilson, I am very sorry to hear you only have one wins so far this season and you may need some help. Since you already traded away your first round pick in next years draft perhaps you are willing to trade your second round pick that would be sure to bring you over the one wins threshold. He would look stunning in the white and blue uniform.

Good road game for Vancouver.  It was definitely the best game for the fourth line this season!  Sure hope the flu doesn't affect their roster anymore than it already has what with bernier out.  After all, we don't have the same clout with our health department (unless you play for the Abbottsford Flames/Heat) that Calgary and their family has with theirs....what a joke that was!

A lot of teams will be calling foul play if they all come down with the flu bug while Calgary does not.  It's amazing what a few pairs of  season tickets can buy you these days.  ;)

I have to say I have been very surprised by how well the Canucks have been doing as of late, BUT how about those red hot LA KINGS. 6 wins and 2 SO loses in their last 8, 2 points out of a tie for most points in the NHL, handed the high flying Pens their first road loss of the season last night. That is all.

Do you think the Kings would consider a straight across trade ....Kopitar for Hordichuk?   Then we might be able to start playing our D back on defence.

Looks like we don't need Kopitar.  Daniel Sedin is back a couple of weeks early, as is Bernier and Hansen.  Time to move the defence back to the D.    Can't wait to see how long it will take Bieksa to make his first ill advised pinch!  LOL

Luongo came down with a flu bug so he's likely to be out until the end of the week...at least.   Now we only have 4 injured guys out!  So what are the chances that they'll return before Salo comes down with something??

And this is the reason management/ownership wont put out the money to pay for decent scouts, or players. If the people will still buy tickets who cares. In Vancouver people dont put up with crap. If the Canucks purely sucked year in and year out like the Leafs people would not go. Thats the only way of making sure they buck up!!!

it is BB's first full season in a 5 yr contract...RW is his buddy...ya can't fire players...they have a thing called contracts...so I'd venture the coach and GM will survive this season and the next 3 at least

Oh ya and Rhino is a huge Flames fan ( as well as a Laughs fan ) boy tough night for you hey Rhino LOL One team gets is butt kicked and one blows a big lead to lose and is officially in the basement. Tough luck LOL

It was a tough night for me in more ways then just that but thank you very much for your thought and concern.

the positive is that we are up on vancouver by 4points and 1 less game played, also Flames have beat Vancouver 3-5 in both games so far this season. :P :P :P :P ;D

Now there is a die hard Leaf fan. They're last in penalty killing, last in the league, a goalie that hasn't won this year. Whether you lose by 1 goal or 11 goals; the results are the same. Saw on SportsCentre tonight that the Laughs have 11 free agents at the end of this season. It's house cleaning time ! ;D

At least the Leafs got a point tonight, although with 61 shots on goal you'd think they could get a win. Maybe you can trade Kessel back to the Bruins for your first round pick.

Except for a lack lustre second period where there was far too many odd man rushes and turnovers Vancouver played a solid game tonight.  Luongo was stellar!  If only we had a few more guys with hands.  Daniel Sedin hasn't found his yet and is still looking for his first tally......Bernier, and a few other have cement in their gloves!

On another note when Wellwood hit the post with the net empty I though how snake bitten can a guy get?  Couldn't help but laugh but it was nice to see him finally capitalize.  Anybody else notice how they took Samuelson off the Kesler line during the third and replaced him with Hansen.  Sure gave the line a lot more jump!  I hope when Grabner comes back from injury and has a stint in Manitoba to get his touch back that he comes back to that line because when he was there it was the best that Raymond and Kesler had played all season.

Had to be the worst second period played by the Canucks all season.  You can't take the 30th place team lightly.  Talk about turnovers that ended up in the net!  And to top things off when the Canucks did have chances like Kesler's break away he couldn't bury it.

Going to be a tough third!  The Canucks have a very tough time playing from behind, especially when they're down by 3 goals.

The Canucks have always been good slump busters for other teams.  It was the first game in 9 that players like Whitney and Cole have scored, not to mention Staal who hasn't collected hardly any points this year.  It also never ceases to amaze me how many players score their first NHL goal against the Canucks.   Not today, though.

But in saying this it does tend to wake the Canucks up and they usually rebound with some wins.  Hopefully it will happen against Nashville who have been playing well of late and are ahead of them in the standings.  I don't think anyone expected the team to go 4 straight on the road trip so if they beat the Preds I'll be more than satisfied.

7 bad bounces? Not likely just crappy playing LOL

Even a goalie switch didnt help them. Their defense is terrible. Over 100 GA in under 30 games. Thats brutal. Canucks are at 80 GA in exactly 30 games and also have like 20 more goals for. Sad sad team you have their LOL

Luongo seems off his game this year...is that C too heavy to carry along with his regular duties????....maybe he needs to be told when he will play as opposed to demanding to play...he needs something cos he don't look like the Luongo I love to hate...maybe Ray-so-soft should take a bigger chunk of games????....whatever it is he'd best figure it out soon or the Carp will be on the outside lookin' in come April

Don't think Luongo is the problem although he has only stolen a game or maybe two for us this year.  Right now the team is lacking finish... Vigneault calls it 'timely goals".  The number of scoring chances the team gets compared to the number of goals scored is minute!  Between Kesler and Daniel Sedin last game they must have had a half dozen glorious scoring opportunities.  Kesler, at least hit the net.....Daniel not so much, although both guys eventually scored.  How Sedin could miss the net from 15' out boggles the mind.

The PP, although ranked 4th in the league has been absolutely brutal lately.  Salo and Bieksa  WON'T shoot the puck.  I thought it was a good idea putting Raymond back on the point.  He may not have a heavy shot but he shoots every chance he gets.  PK has been on the weak side, too.  In a nutshell...they're playing to soft.

The Canucks have work to do!  Enuff said!

Mastercaster... loves his team but isn't afraid to tell it like it is!

Yup they have lost 5 of their last 6 games. So much for them turning things around LOL

On another note Kessel has 0 points in his last 5 games and is a -5

Canucks win again this time beating the Oilers 4-1. 44 points in 38 games. Not so good for the Leafs as they are 9 points behind the Canucks with one more game played.

Keep dreaming Chris. Meanwhile the Canucks are on fire with 5 straight wins and have moved into the lead in their division. Burrows is on fire with two Hat-Tricks in a row. The top line has combined for 17 points in the past two games. I almost feel bad for you Leafs fans....then I just think of how much the Leafs suck and I smile.

A great team? Pens have been struggling lately so they lost to a struggling team. Malkin has not been scoring and Crosby hasnt either. The Pens are 3-7 in their last 10 how is that a great team? You gotta do some research on your opinions LOL The Wild is 6-4 in their last 10. Who is the hotter team? Besides that a loss is a loss and both teams lost so  :P

Have to weigh in on this one....
Maybe they should pick up Mike Brodeur. He has only played 3 NHL games in his career, all this season with Ottawa.
He has allowed 3 goals and has a shutout, and has made some incredible saves (almost looking like someone else with his last name  ;D )
Yet Ottawa chooses to still play the fragile Leclair or Elliot (Elliot is good though and should split games 50/50 with Brodeur) and send Brodeur down to the ECHL constantly.
BTW... Brodeur is a UFA at the end of this year and Ottawa doesn't seem smart enough to hang onto him so you better get on the phone Chris.

Pumped that a young rookie goalie has helped his struggling team now win 2 in a row  8)
Also doesn't understand how Ottawa always seems to draft good goalies (Elliot, Emery, now Brodeur), yet goal tending their problem every year.  ::)  :o

What a devious game plan by the Canucks. Surrendering 3 easy goals in the first period to lure the Toronto fans into believing a victory is theirs and then drive the dagger into their collective hearts by scoring 5 straight goals. Just to rub a little salt into the wound, Andrew Raycroft ex-Leaf shut them out the rest of the way. Not a bad performance by a couple of Swedes who are soft in the corners. ;D Start polishing the golf clubs because the only playoffs the Leaf fans are going to see is on television. ;D

Two teams in dire need of a shakeup have done just that, as the Calgary Flames have shipped defenceman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and defenceman Keith Aulie to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

The Maple Leafs and Flames have been working on the components of this blockbuster for a week to ten days, but sources say the details of the deal didn't fall into place until late last night.

The Flames were mired in its worst slump (0-6-3) since an 11-game losing streak in 1986 before getting on the winning side of the tracks on Saturday night with a 6-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in the Battle of Alberta.

The Maple Leafs are coming off a dramatic loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday evening, giving up a three-goal first period lead before falling 5-3. With the loss, coupled with Carolina's 4-2 victory over Chicago, Toronto now sits 29th in the NHL standings.

The Hurricanes and Leafs are tied in points with 45 but Carolina is ahead because of more wins.

So... the leafs give up half their top 6 consisting of AHL players for an overrated defenceman with a huge cap hit?? How are they going to fill out their lines? lower calibre AHL players!!?? Burke seems desperate.  ;D :D
And now the rumour is blake and toskala for guigere and a 1st!? Burkie... you can't fix this team in one day.
Title: Re: NHL Smack Talk 09-10
Post by: bbronswyk2000 on January 31, 2010, 10:22:21 AM
Phaneuf never lived up to the expectations set on him. Plus he is a bad team player. Their is a reason he is not on Team Canada. Good luck with him LOL

Leafs just traded for the most over paid goaltender in the league JS Giguire, giving up Toskala and Blake. This might be even funnier. They take on a huge salary to a goaltender who lost his starting job and has struggled the last two years. Good luck with those two players, their high salaries as well as Burkes stupid decisions HAHAHA!!!

Blockbuster trade like that will probably save Burke and Wilson's jobs till around Christmas next year by then even the most rabid Leafs fan will realise that OMG we still suck, time to fire everyone and rebuild again, after all we'll be drafting in the top 5 for all of the forseeable future this should move us up to within 10 points of a basement playoff spot anyhow.  In Vancouver Burke took over the foundations of a good team and never took it to that next level, in Toronto he took over the foundations of a team that sucked and has made it suck harder, GL Chris at least you'll have lots of time for trout fishing when the playoffs role around for the next few years.

I m glad you haven't forgot about me. You are so kind. I have not forgotten the fact that the flames  are 3-1 this year against the casucks either. The trade was great for me. Made both my teams better now. I hope the flames face vancouver in the playoffs and send you guys golfing again earlier then anticipated like we have in the past.

1983 Calgary sweeps the casucks in 4
1984-vancouver loses to flames again
1988-vancouver loses again to Calgary again-Flames win the CUP!!!!
1993-cansuck win in game 7 only because of the best player that ever played for them(the Russian rocket)that they traded away later LMAO!!(what a sick goal tho)!!! watch it!   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzPLHyfttQM
2003-casucks LOSE AGAIN to FLAMES-Flames go to finals and lose in controversial fashion to tampa

I don't blame your for hating the flames, after getting tooled by the them so many times in the playoffs I would not like them either. i don't blame you for getting over excited about your casucks right now cause you know they wont get much further then the first round. :P :P ;D ;D

Dude. Well = Good. You mean to say "will". I only point it out because you make this mistake often, along with others like then/than, to/too/two, there/their/they're, our/are, etc. etc. This is basic elementary school English.

Jokinen was supposed to play well with Iginla but that failed. I think he's over rated. I think the Flames have made very good trades over the past few days.

Broncos did better than I had expected. At the start of the season I predicted them to go 6-10.

This is a hockey thread and the Canucks are ahead of the Laughs and Flamers.

I say lots of nice things about the Canucks and other things. Why would a Canucks fan say anything nice about the Laughs? Or Toronto for that matter.....

Dion its called lazy typing and not thinking. I do enough paperwork that I have to proofread I dont want to do it on these forums.

Why would I want to live there? BC is the most beautiful province in the country. We also do not think we are the center of the universe like Toronto does. The CBC pretty much only plays Toronto games despite being a Canadian station not a Toronto station. Also even though the Leafs suck bad this year they wont replace them with a contending team in that slot. Its pretty bad when Toronto gets all this air time when we ( as in all Canadians ) are all paying for these services.

i didn't ask you why you wouldn't live there. I asked if you have lived there. they way you were talking about the city in dislike implemented like you did. so your are just stereotyping without really knowing.  if you have a problem with the stations you don't need to slam the city that you know nothing about. You own a business, and you would do whatever you can to make it profitable.CBC is a business too.

Nothing to worry about Chris. Vigneault was showcasing Raycroft in a trade back to Toronto for a first round pick. ;D

It was nice to see Raycroft get a much deserved start last night, he played very well and kept the Canucks in it right till the end, would have been nice to see a little more desperation from the Cannucks especially given the fact that Ottawa should have been the more tired team, fact is the Canucks were outplayed in the first and Raycroft kept them whithin one goal, the Canucks took over the game for most of the second and all of the third and were stymied by a very good goaltender !!

Ottawa is not a very fun team to watch as they definately use a five man blueline trap to win their games, sort of reminds me how the Nuckers played under Crawford... too bad concidering the talent they have in that team !!

Oh well time to regroup and take out Boston early Saturday, should be a great game which I will have to PVR and watch later in the day as I will be out hunting Steel first thing Saturday morning :)

cheers Rick

Awesome game last night!
Elliot is a beast, I really hope LeClair stays benched for the rest of the season.
GO SENS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS Why not play the trap when they are winning lots of games doing it? And I have watched almost every game on this winning streak, they are normally scoring 3 or 4 goals a game and never play like they did last night, I agree that was boring as hell to watch (when ost of their games are fast and fun to watch). And a trap team never seems to score any goals at all, and rely on their goalie. Ottawa does score their fair share of goals and does rely on Elliot a bit but not as much as say New Jersey does on Broduer. It's almost like a hybrid trap team lol.

From TSN

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke's youngest son Brendan passed away on Friday. The team released the following statement:

"We are saddened to report that Brendan Burke, the youngest son of Leafs President and General Manager Brian Burke, succumbed to injuries he suffered in an auto accident earlier today in Indiana. The family asks for privacy at this difficult time."

Full marks on shutting down the hottest team in the league.

Ottawa was far from the hottest team. Washington is doing way better at 14 in a row now I believe.
LA was also at 9 in a row. But yes a great win for the Laughs.
Ottawa will start another 10 game streak starting this week by taking out Calgary and Washington  ;D

Alright 2nd hottest team is not "far"  ;D...  But I wouldn't count Washington as being "hot" either; they're a bunch of freaks bred solely for the purpose of annihilating other teams, hardly fair  ::) :D

Canada's favorite team is the team that just won us Olympic gold (which had no Leafs players). However that feat was made possible by Coach Ron Wilson and GM Brian Burke of the Leafs. So, thanks for that. LOL

Another convincing win for the Canucks. Luongo looked stellar.

Two more games and Leaf Nation will be hitting the golf course. The Leaf's power play and penalty killing are ranked dead last in the league. The last time a team ranked last in both category was San Jose coached by...........Ron Wilson ! ;D Tough to be a Leaf fan.

For once you may be right.
They are starting to look good. As much as I hate the Leafs I have to admit they are picking up a lot of young talent and their goalie isn't bad either  ;D

PS.

GO SENS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!

They're out of the playoff hunt and have nothing to play for. No pressure. They'll be back to the usual selves in the fall. ;D

Leafs have lost 3 in a row. Hardly looking better. Still 2nd to last in the NHL.

Wow what a killing 7-3 Canucks, 4 points for Henrik and now ahead by 3 points over Ovechkin. Henrik also set a new team record for most points in a single season with 112 points. Bure held it with 110 points. Glad Henrik took that record from Bure!!!

Not bad for a "sista" that is supposedly "soft" and lacks grit according to a hockey pundit.

Definition of Canuck: A Canadian

Which means The Vancouver Canucks are Canada's team!!! Now that we have established that we can go on to say that Canada's favorite team now has the NHL's scoring leader!! Henrik Sedin is now the first Canuck to win a scoring title!! Congrats to Henrik he deserves it.

I thought you had switched over to the Nucks Bandwagon ?? there is still plenty of room for you and Chris !! and like someone else said Canuck = Canadian ... so if you are Canadian you should have no trouble supporting Canada's team !!

By the way I predict Nucks in 5

"its the most wonderful time of the year !!!!!"

I like your prediction Chris. After all, didn't you predict that the Leafs will win the Stanley Cup this year, the year before and the years before that ? ;D I see a pattern here.

Every year since this web page started. If you say it enough times people will start to believe it and it will soon happen. Parade being prepared once again, for 2067, O typing error, I meant 2011. ;D ;D ;D

I would say at this point no question, JOnathan Quick is outplaying Roberto Luongo.  Quick has been the backbone for the Kings, Bobby-Lu needs to step up his game and do the same if Canucks want to move on.  Also, is it just me or does Kesler not look right...?  Usually he's all over the ice making an impact, right now he's just winning face-offs.

All I have to say right now....
The reffing is BULL$HIT...
Every game I've watched for Ottawa and Vancouver the reffing has been lopsided and just terrible.
Im beginning to think the NHL is rigged or someone is paying out the refs, both on the ice and in video review in Toronto.

Stop using the excuse I have used for years as that is the reason the Leafs donot win the Cup let alone make the playoffs. ;D ;D ;D
