Title: Chilliwack River, September 15th 2009: Yeah retard made my day..
Post by: Sinaran on September 15, 2009, 06:38:03 PM
Arrived just on time for the first light, but the first two hours produced nothing for me.  So i went to the island in the middle of the canal where i found a promising hole and started fishing there. Baited up with newly cured roe, second cast in, the float dipped.  Fight was on after a solid hook set.  It was a jack spring, i brought it to the shore, took a pic and let it go.  He was on stinky little retard, where i hold his tail i could still smell the stink even after washing it a few times.  :-\    Switched to a small colorado, and that started the Pink frenzy... ;)   I landed about 6 pinks in an hour, most of them slightly coloured up.  5 were released and i kept a clean looking female.  not much happpened after 10am, no jumping spring sighted there all morning long.  I left at 12pm.  One side note though:   My car's rear window was smashed this morning at Lickman road's parking lot at around 6:15am when it was a bit dark still.  I didn't fish too far away from my car, so when i heard the siren i just rushed back to the parking lot, but the junkie was no where to be seen.  I didn't lost anything except the $300 ICBC deductible   >:( >:(.  So watch up guys, when u fish the river.  Just make sure u don't leave anything valuable in your car, and try to park at somewhere u can actually see from where u r fishing (it's hard, i know that)..

Sad and saddder still it will happen many time this year on the Chilliwack Vedder system. I had sent out a warning a few weeks ago of several recent piles of glass i have observed at Lickman. As you noted try to park where you can see your vehicle or park in a high traffic area even if it means walking a bit of a distance. I keep thinking of bringing a bike in the back of the Leaf Mobile and park the LM in as safe a place as possible and start biking.  :-\

Hey Sinaran!  Nice to have met you on the flow yesterday.  We met at your second spot of the day.  You showed me the window....
That really sucks about the window.  At least nothing was stolen.  Its terrible that we have to constantly worry about this type of stuff happening when out on the flow. It actually effects my choice of fishing spots.  I've had to avoid some of my favourite and most productive spots as they are just too high risk for vehicle break-ins.

I don't think the crooks even bother looking inside before smashing the window.  I have heard of people who have left their doors unlocked and still returned to a broken window.  It's always best to present as much of a deterant as possible.  I leave nothing in plain sight.  I leave my glove box and other compartments open and empty.  And I try to park in as visible/high traffic areas as possible.

And all of us should be more vigilant.  If you see anything remotely suspicious, please take the time to check it out.  A minute or two of your day can put an end to all this.  Once a few of these bastards get caught, word will spread and it will come to a stop.

My brother pulled out a floating old man about 80 years of age from his certain death today at Peach Rd.
He was just cleaning his fish...slipped...waders started filling with water....couldn't get back up....toppled towards the deeper water...started floating downstream.
Everyone else fishing there was old and in waders basically doing nothing while this guy was floating downstream.
Luckily my brother was in shorts and old running shoes and was able to get out there in a flash.
He then pulled him out and no question saving the old guy's life.

Good on your brother. My Dad is in his lower seventy's . He loves fishing but his leg just gives out on him at times. He has no control over it. He carries a cane. I would be more than thankful and indebted if someone was to pull him out of the water. Fortunately he is very very careful and paranoid about falling in the water. Hopefully we will all become seventy or eighty one day. Hopefully there would be somebody who would go in the water for us if need be. If you do go into the water though try to grab a stick or something to have them grab because in a feared state they could pull you in with them. :)

Can you buy a little webcam that hooks up to a VCR. and try to catch them on tape. Maybe disguise the webcam on the dash and hide the VCR under the seat. How much do you think this  would cost?

Sinaran: sorry to hear about the TDMs who spoiled your fishing trip. But not to  get things sidetracked but an earlier post makes some good points. If you do not have good balance do not wade in the water while fishing. There are spots on the Vedder which lend themselves to fishing from shore. Also, no need to go out far to clean your fish.  If you are up to your knees while cleaning your fish, that is in my opinion a bit too deep to go.  Hopefully good karma, comes to the good samaritan on future fishing trips.

Only problem with the idea is that the B***********  would steal the vcr and camera.  I think we should set up a sting operation and then take our own revenge.

might be worth it for someone to put out a collection box to be a parking lot monitor.  pretty nice job for someone who doesn't fish, but wants a little extra $$.  I know I'd be willing to throw a $5 in the box if I knew someone was hanging around to keep an eye on things.

These break ins are so rampant it's getting to the point where one of the fishing partner stays behind and stand guard while the rest of the party fishes. Or bring your girlfriend / wife who stays with the car.

i agree.  I'd pay $5-$10 to fish with peace of mind.  could be a great business idea for someone with the time.  Would be nice to be able to get out for a few hours before/after work and leave my work equipment in the vehicle.  Also would be really nice to bring out a few different rods/reels.

I've actually considered leaving my vehicle at Fred's or somewhere else busy and taking a taxi to the river.  There are a half dozen or so spots that I love, but are very high risk. its like Russian roulette fishing there.  Sooner or later you're bound to get broken into.

Unfortunately every parking lot around the Vedder is susceptible to this nowadays. Main thing is, don't leave anything of value in your vehicle.

I think the police should buy some wildlife motion detection cameras and mount them in the trees around the parking area and check them when they get called out there. ???

Not much pisses me off more than some junky breaking windows while you're trying to relax doing a little fishing.  Really sucks to be out on the water with that constantly on the back of your mind.

It shouldn't have to come to this but here are a couple suggestions.

1) Buy a car cover on eBay or somewhere else and put it on before you head out.
2) (Redneck version of above suggestion) Hang a tarp over the side windows and tie it down with some straps.

Maybe a little overboard and you'd probably get some odd looks from people but I'm fairly certain those lazy bastards would choose to move on to someone else's car.

Is that some sorta trick question to get people to reveal their hotspots? lol.jk
Anywhere and everywhere.  Obviously anywhere with not much foot traffic would be high risk.
Lickman is actually quite busy and there are still break-ins there.  So that shows you how ballsy they are.

Are the breakins primarily during the early morning hours or are they all day long?  I"m debating only fishing from walking distance from the campground during mornings then taking the truck out in the afternoons.

We have talked to them about this but unfortunately they do not have the time or the resources to do this at this time.

I would suggest you start a group, then collect some money from your group to hire a security firm to patrol and watch a couple of key parking area for you. This is the only way in my mind to stop this as it is discussed with lots of ideas from many year after year but nothing is ever implemented. Taking this into ones own hands in dealing with the culprits should not be even be considered as it could get you in more trouble as you never know who you will be dealing with. We all know there has been serious injury and even death when people intervene in similar situations be it robberies or street fights.

I would pay $10 for the collection box.

I think it is a great idea.  There is always someone looking for some part time money and it is not a very long hours.  It basically happen mostly in early hours in any given parking lot.  Once the lot is busy say after 8am, there is really no need for them.  From 5-8, 3 hours of work.  Easy to get 10 cars.  That is $100 in the weekday.

It can and does occur at all hours of the day and at all locations.  I've seen broken glass from the cottonwoods all the way up to cement slab.  Some of the worst places are Lickman, Browne, giesbrecht, Bergman.  Always broken glass at those spots.  Oddly enough, the upper seems a bit safer.

Just as I hit post, I realized something.... I do not see nearly as much broken glass in the upper.  Maybe this is because the culprits are working in pairs or groups and the communication issues up that way prevent them from using spotters or lookouts.

Get yourself a friend with a pick up truck. And another friend with a big hockey bag. Then another friend who is bendy (and helps if he is a ninja). Put friend C in friend B's hockey bag. Place both items in friend A's pick up truck. When junkie/thief (here after referred to as variable D), opens bag, C jumps on D and produces duck tape. Tape D to nearby tree, with a note. Call RCMP, and leave.

Charlemagne used to string up the dead bodies of Vikings on the trees at river mouths to deter future Viking river raids. Perhaps a few duck taped D's would produce similar results. Might even get the fuzz to take the area seriously.

Yes, I do think someone would throw money into a collection box if someone was around doing their job.  They would not steal the box if someone is around.  And, yes, I don think someone would be willing get paid to set up a lawn chair, read a book and keep an eye on things.  What do you think old people do?

In New Zealand's kauri forest there was a person who watched the parking lot for this scenic attraction.  Used to be terrible break-in problems because you would be away for about 45-1 hr each time and they would just wait in the bushes for the tourists to go.  $2 fee pays for a guy to watch the lot and there are no more problems (or they have just moved elsewhere).  So this theory would work.
