The tale of the goldfinch and the chickadee

She came in looking for a quick bite.
but upon landing on the feeder, she was unhappy to see someone already at the feed:
This litte guy would have none of her chattering or bullying.
His main problem was to figure out which of the thousands of seeds in front of him he was going to eat.

The goldfinch kept looking and chattering and trying to convince the chickadee to leave.

She was hungry and was really looking to get down and eat...

Apparently she is more "bark than bite"
She resigned herself to sitting and waiting her turn while a very finicky chickadee indeed chose which seed to take away and chew on.

I think while I watched this, that it was the longest I've seen a chickadee think about which seed to eat. I'm not sure if he was doing it to spite the goldfinch. Despite the fact that there were 3 other feeder ports, she apparently really wanted this one.

And that is the tale of the chickadee and the goldfinch.

Captured at ISO 1250 in the evening light (F5.6 1/320 @400mm)

Northern Flicker

These guys always startle me when they come to the feeder, given that they are about the same SIZE as the feeder

He kindly posed for me in the tree nearby... a bit dim in the morning cloudy day, but it turned out well

Flickers are very interesting birds, lots of personality, even when they are smacking away at your cedar shingles at 4am.

Cedar Waxwings...
A first time sighting for me...

There was what appeared to be a Juvenile and an Adult in the ash tree...

They were both pretty backlit.... I had to pull the adult out at 1600 ISO... and blow the sky out something fierce. Some blooming or CA(I hope not) I think near the high contrast edges.

Cedar waxwing males are really cool, love the crest on their heads....they look quite "regal".  Used to see lots going after the berries in the trees about this time of year in kelowna in years past.

You've got some nice shots of a Juvenile bald eagle.  Golden eagles are solid brown.

Here are some more of my pileated friend:

If you get tired of seeing this guy - just shout :)

These were shot with the 70-200... Love that nice narrow DOF!
Clicking on each shot will bring you to a LARGER version that is decidely nicer  in sharpness/colour.

Eagleeye, an easy way to tell a golden from immature bald is the size of the head compared to the body.  Bald eagles have pretty big heads compared to body size whereas the golden eagle's head is more typical raptor size in relation to its body.

We got lucky hiking up in the cathedrals....not only did we see a couple of goldens, we found a feather too :)

Yeah I think they grow to adult size pretty quickly with all the feed around.  I think with adults there is quite a range of sizes.  I've seen relatively small (still big) balds and some that are HUGE....you forget how impressive they are because this time of year there are so many around.

There are way more snow geese this year than previous years DS! A few minutes ago a huge flock just flew very lowly over our place, at first I thought it was hailing outside because the wing flapping was so loud.

VAGAbond I haven't seen them at that field yet this year, that must be this weekend?

Finally, I managed to get out and get some good shots of the cedar waxwings visiting at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Delta last week.

Jumpy little birds - and VERY pretty:

1. posing

2. They seem to jump off the branches and almost hover while trying to find a new spot to land

3. Showing off their lovely colours - including the tail that looks like it has been dipped in yellow paint :)

4. No matter how good looking a species may be - sometimes there's just a WTF moment. This poor guy was having a bad hair day (it wasn't THAT windy)

Nice shots above! I especially like Rodney's 6th shot on his second post; wicked pose (looks like a cartoon character), and Rodney's 3rd post of the seagull that looks like he is pissed off and having a bad morning  ;D the background and foreground accentuate the pose. VAGAbond's second post; nice capture, and DragonSpeed's 2nd and 3rd shots of the cedar waxwings.  Thanks for sharing.

Love those pintails.  Took the kids out there the other day, my brother was sitting on the bench and a duck jumped right up on him, sat down, and looked at my brother as if to say "well? you gonna feed me or what?"   Great time of year to see lots of birds out there.

Lesser Scaups and a Gadwall

From my birding haunt... the Reifel Bird Sanctuary again:

The Gadwall was a first time shooting... they are pretty shy around here. The scaups have always given me exposure problems with their dark blacks - seems to have been a bit better today. Enjoy!

1) Gadwall (male/female?):

Buffleheads

Some Buffleheads from a visit to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary near Vancouver:

They are particularly skittish and don't like to come within 30+ feet of people. Their colouring is such that the best way to describe it is "Photographer's nightmare" due to the high contrast white and black. I was so happy that these two males came a bit closer but after a LONG wait.... Enjoy!

Looks like that eagle has his work cut out for him... There are a lot of gulls that want that fish.

Things are much wetter now, so the photo ops are going to be fewer and farther between.  Enjoy these!
