Title: 12 foot long white sturgeon
Post by: Rodney on October 27, 2008, 08:42:59 PM
This past weekend one of the largest white sturgeon from this season was caught by a group of sport anglers fishing with STS Guiding Service in Mission, BC. The fish measured 11 ft 1 inch to the fork which is well over 12 ft with a 59 inch girth.

STS Guide Matt Schaap landed this fish after 90 minutes of battle. The fish was scanned, tagged and released unharmed.

Amazing how gentle these fish are once landed - almost docile (we were with STS Guides in late Sept) and managed a nice 7' fish.  The bait rigged that worked really well was rotten salmon fillets, skin up with the huge hook on a dacron leader.  The guide just layed the hook on the salmon, folded it like a burrito and then wrapped it up with a binding thread... along with a 26 oz pyramid weight and cast out to the bottom.

First time for me with Sturgeon and just an amazing fun bringing them in and then releasing them - very hardy fish...  ;D

The majority of the time people measure sturgeon from the nose to the fork of the tail.  So, really it is 11' 1" not 12'.
Still a big my friend fish though

That is unbelieveable.  I went sturgeon fishing for the first time this past august and caught a 4.5ft.  I was amazed at the amount of power they have, and had to hold on for dear life as it felt like it could pull me overboard.  I cant imagine how you could even hold on to the rod with a fish this big.

11'1" from head to tail fork, 12' from head to tip of tail. ;D 12' just sounds so much better... ;D

There's a big difference between fork length and total length.
Fork length is correct - any other measure is misleading.

Well done, what luck!!  This was my first sturgeon just a couple of weeks ago: (http://i35.tinypic.com/21eb9ci.jpg), I'm hoping to catch it when it's a bit bigger.

Nice, it's still a tick in the box and we all have to start somewhere and have something to look forwards to next time out. As they say, things can only get better.

Well then those guides snoozed if they didnt promote a fish of a lifetime.
If i know Vic he is smarter than that and im sure he will give a photo to any newspaper or media outlet that wants it.

Grrat looking fish and congrats to all who where there .

Definately a fish of a lifetime. :)
Those big boys don't get caught very often.
If I was a guide,I'd make sure the right people knew about it.
It would be a great promo!! ;)
Now where was it caught??? ;D

Whats wrong with promoting it? Isn't the idea of running a business to make money?

I am stumped that people would begrudge a guide for seeking attention for a great catch...seeings how that is what people pay them to do, it would seem practical to provide potential clients notice that have recently done so...

That was a great fish for Matt, Clients and all guides who fish the Fraser. The previous large fish that made it all over the country was an excellent job done by whoever spread the news, we booked lots of trips beacuse of it. Unfortunately I didn't have the time( too busy fishing) to do that for Matt's fish so I only sent it to BC Tourism who then spread it around to media.  We get so much doom and gloom fishing news is this area, anything positive that promotes our fishery is good news.

Still lots of good fishing so get out there and fish, lots of time to be an internet expert in the winter.

What is the catch and release mortality for sturgeon?
Title: Re: 12 foot long white sturgeon

The ratio is very very low.
Dont know the exact numbers but they are a very hardy fish.

According to Fraser River Sturgeon conservation study that has been going on since 1994, the mortality on sturgeon for catch & release is 0%. There has been 40,000 sturgeon tagged in the fraser, not one has come up dead as a result of sportfishing. The biggest killer of sturgeon is the gillnet fishery in the summer on the Fraser.
