I've been using a gas powered smoker now for about two years (paid about $300 for Smokey Mountain Series gas smoker)...
The best things about it is consistent heat, huge space (30 pounds of salmon no problemo) and versatility.
I used to only smoke salmon in it but now have branched out to other meats/veggies (you can get it up to 500 degrees cooking temperature if you want)....
I did a chicken in it this weekend with root vegetables...and all i have to say is wow...chicken tasted like ham.
Consider a gas powered smoker...I'm very pleased with the results...

Seriously consider getting a small battery operated fan at the bottom to swirl the smoke and act as a "convection" mechanism plus a probe thermometer for measuring the meat temperature. Otherwise, it's just like this one:

how long did the chicken take to cook?

how long did the chicken take to cook?
90 mins at 350...put in the bird first and then the veggies for under an hour...
also which is great is I use one of those standup things for the chicken so it fit in no problem since it is too high sometimes for an oven...
