Title: 2008 Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley rainbow trout stocking information
Post by: Rodney on March 06, 2008, 01:50:49 AM
LOWER MAINLAND/FRASER VALLEY LAKE RAINBOW TROUT FISHERY

Spring is finally showing itself in 2008 and rainbow trout fishing in lakes across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley is once again starting to heat up. The Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery, operated by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, has started its rainbow trout stocking this week. Stockings will continue until June, so fishing is expected to be excellent in the next several months. These angling opportunities are fantastic for families, youth and entry-level anglers due to high catch success rate.

We will once again be providing regular stocking reports to keep you updated so you can plan your next weekend fishing trip better. Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley lake stocking reports will be available in this thread as well as on this page (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking_2.html). You can also find archived reports of catchable rainbow trout stockings across BC in this section of the website (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking.html).

So true! I live near Como lake and I am always telling adults (well over 16 but no where near 65+) to bugger off and read the signs. I always love the excuse that thier kid is actually the one fishing, he's just across the lake in the playground right now.. he'll be right back.

Human nature push the envelope until the boundary is found. Sounds like fisheries needs to start spanking a few adult children, once the message gets out, it will stop.

Just so everyone knows, I took a drive upto Mike lake yesterday and the gate is open but the parking lot is covered in snow and the lake still has ice on it. Well at 3/4 of the lake does have ice and snow. It will be a while yet before the lake is fishable.

I believe so but I don't think as much as places like Mike, Green Timbers or LaFarge but I may be wrong on that, I go there once in a while, as it is easy access for me, since I can hardly walk some days, and yes I have the $1 disability license. I hate mentioning that I have that license but other forums people jump on me with the under 16 over 65 routine and I should not be going there.....

Problem with Como is same old crowd catches limit everday. The kids don't have a long time to enjoy the good fishing for a long time. Why not make the limit 2 fish instead of 4. It's not supposed to be a freezer filling fishery.

Second batch of lake stockings will take place starting today. The bulk of the stockings will happen next week, just before the launch of "Fishing in the City" program by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC at Rice Lake on Saturday April 12th. I will have more information on that event as well as the latest stocking updates very soon.

I believe that enforcement MUST be increased on these local lakes as the same group of anglers go from site to site.
At Como Lake, i have witnessed many double haul limits. Fish cops were called and they checked some anglers. Most had left by the time they arrived, but there was some education given re regs. More signage is required, possible in many languages.
Be vigilant when witnessing any infractions, call em up.

Hi Rod

Regarding Rice lake in particular, are these stocking numbers much higher compared to years past? Was the rate of attrition over the winter higher than normal? Seems like they've dumped 1000 of them in there per month since this past November.

Cheers

Hi nvloc, yes I believe more fish are being stocked so far this season. A big batch is being put in this week because the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC will be doing the launch of "Fishing in the City" event this Saturday (the weather forecast looks great! 19C expected... but I'll believe it when I see/feel it ;D ). These entry level lakes are designed to get more people into fishing in the city and the society is really pushing it to increase participation. Expect to see at least a couple more stockings until the Family Fishing Weekend in mid June.

It's weird how the gofishbc states that this batch's average size was 151.5 grams for all of these three lakes, but I know that's not right since the size of the fish I caught over the weekend were more like the 330 grams as stated by Rod.

Yes the differences have been brought to my attention a few times and I really don't have an explanation for it. Usually the gofishbc website is updated in Victoria, so hatcheries would relay their information to Victoria first before it is published. For Region 2, we are fortunate that the manager at the Abbotsford Hatchery is very proactive on getting the information to me right away. I'll try to find out more on this issue.

Lake name           Number of fish
Lafarge840
Como1,100

Lake name           Number of fish
Rolley700
Whonnock300
Sasamat700

Average weight of these fish is 195 grams.

OCTOBER 8TH 2008'S RAINBOW TROUT STOCKINGS

Lake name           Number of fish
Mike550
Errock300
Grace500
Browning400

Average weight of these fish is 213 grams.

Here is the explanation by the hatchery on the smaller trout in fall stockings.

Quote
The fish are averaging just under 200 grams which is smaller than the spring releases. We are not able to get our fish to size as easily for the fall. We want to try and get the fish in as early in the fall as possible but we also recognize the desire for the fish to be of reasonable size. 200 grams is our target for this year and we are now at it. Unfortunately, we are late in getting the fish out. The next round of stocking in later October will see fish over 200 grams but unlikely we will see any reach 300 as in the spring.

We do have a tentative plan to have larger fish for next fall. We are hoping to over summer some fish from the 2008 production  year (at Chehalis) through to next fall (2009). These fish will be quite large (400 + grams) and we will hopefully be able to start stocking in mid September (water temp dependant) to try and give people a longer fall fishing season.

The last batch of fish for 2008 will be stocked during this coming week. Lakes that are scheduled to be stocked are Buntzen, Rolley, Sasamat, Whonnock, Rice, Como, Browning, Green Timbers and Lafarge. Beside rainbow trout at catchable size (250g), Lafarge will also be stocked with 200 brood fish that weigh 1.5kg each. I will have the numbers available on the days when stockings take place.

Why bother stocking Lafarge anymore? Should it not be given the rotenone treatment to remove the bass before it is re stocked?

Bass. Never herd of this. When was the last time you saw one there?

When Lafarge Lake was sampled overnight with a net by the Ministry of Environment a month ago, a small largemouth bass was found. One largemouth bass found does not mean ceasing of stocking and the trout fishery, but monitor with caution. If an established population is determined, then the option of rotenone treatment may come into play, which is very expensive.

will a treatment like that cause harm to the Carp in the lake?

Rotenone is a piscicidal toxin, which would kill all the fish in a waterbody but spare the lives of other organisms.

I hear you Troutbreath. I mean they used to dump 1500 fish in Green Timbers every spring, now we get like 500 maybe  ::) its pathetic because so many people take more then they are allowed and all the stocked fish are basically gone in a week or two  >:( I like this little lake for some C&R and relaxation but i mean jeesh i dont wanna go there just for casting practice LOL

Size of the city does not dictate the amount of fish being stocked. Usage by anglers does.

The amount of fish being stocked is determined by several factors - Size of the lake, time of the year, harvest pressure (determined by creel survey and lake stock sampling).

its pathetic because so many people take more then they are allowed and all the stocked fish are basically gone in a week or two  >:(

If witnessing these acts, 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).

If speculating, then they're simply speculations.

Those of you who fish Green Timbers maybe aware of the confusion around the daily quota of trout at that lake. The City of Surrey has designated one fish per day for the lake, which contradicts MoE's regional daily quota of four fish. MoE and City of Surrey have met recently to discuss this. The conclusion is that the daily quota should be raised to two. The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC also supports this idea. Next year, this trial daily quota will come into effect. I will put up a notice when it does. In addition, there are plans to increase stocking numbers for Green Timbers Lake. Combining the two changes, this is a win-win situation for anglers.

Do you have much luck if you email the people at gofishbc? I sent them an email November 7th and no response. If you dont want to discuss this on here I can PM you if you like.

I think it has to do with some problem with the email server at gofishbc. Quite a few (actually, just about all of them) emails have bounced back to me in the last two weeks. Another way to get updated info is to phone the hatchery front desk directly, they are always very willing to provide stocking updates (at least the front desk lady at the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery is).

Thanks but they are not bouncing back. My questions to them are not stocking questions. Its something bigger I am working on ;)

Ah I see. In that case it might be a good idea to phone the front desk and ask for the hatchery manager. I am not familiar with the hatchery contacts on the island as information from other regions are dispatched to me from the Victoria main office, not that hatchery.

Wouldn't want that Otter to starve in Lafarge would they. I think they should make Green Timbers catch and release so that you can catch some fish there. Not two fish a day that's pretty generous when the lake hardly ever gets stocked.

This is the very very last batch of the catchables, I don't think there are fish left in the tank. A couple more last minute surplus broodstocks dumps may take place in December at Lafarge.
