Ok !!! I figured I would get this idea going a little earlier this year and see if we can't improve on the already great numbers we got last year !! once again I am hoping we can get together a ton of great prizes and a big Potluck lunch !! last year we raised over $1000

I am sure we can improve on that number and really start to make a difference, and at the same time have a great time doing it.... I also hope that we can get into a few more Steelhead than we got last time :)

I am hoping that all of you will read this and let me know what we can improve on from last year to make this even Bigger/Better,
any and all ideas are appreciated, I will also be looking for a number of volunteers to help out with the organization and running of the derby..

anyone that is interested in entering or volunteering please let me know so I can get a list of names started

this post goes out to all tackle shops / websites that are interested in donating prizes for the derby

Thx for taking the time to read this and I look forward to your responses

Even with the lack of fish last years derby was alot of fun. This year is gonna be even better, heck we may even have two fish at the weigh-in!

We can help with some of the setup, and Mary has offered to flip burgers again.

Because there are many newcomers on the forum this fall, here are the photos and reports from last winter's derby for those who maybe interested to join in.

Photos: http://www.fishingwithrod.com/member/gallery/2007-steelhead-derby

Report: http://www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=13343.0

Thanks to Rick for volunteering to do this again, because it is a lot of work to put on a derby. I unfortunately will be in Denmark during that time as usual, but will provide some draw prizes. Once you guys have a date finalized, i'll let my contacts know regarding sponsoring the event.

I wasn't there last time, so can't make any suggestions on improvement. One thing I would add is perhaps doing the derby registration at Reaction Fly and Tackle since they open early in the morning and Timmy's next door too, this way people can stock up on their gear as well as breakfast instead of making two stops (Whatcom and Lickman)?

Perhaps Chris can get "The Master" out at the BBQ to provide a small clinic. ;)

Just need to know where too drop it off. I also know that searun17 has got a commitment from another tackle shop as well.

We will have just the one sign up station located in Abby at Reaction Fly & Tackle, it is only a short distance from Chilliwack so hopefully won't be too much of a bother for most people... I think it is very cool that Reaction is helping us out and it gives everybody a chance to pick up any last minute tackle they may need  :)

So far it looks like we have quite a few non fishermen/women that will be able to volunteer their time in order to make this run smoothly, so all you need to do is get to the river and catch a nice Steelie  ;D ;D look forward to seeing you there !!

That would be great , I may be out there this Sunday... probably only going as far as Abby though... I will let you know the next time I am in Chilly !!

Had a good time at the derby last year but Reaction is a little out of the way for people coming from this end of the valley.

The drive to Reaction is not more than fifteen minutes from Chilliwack on a bad day, alot of people that are taking place in this derby are travelling from North Van, Burnaby, Vancouver etc... please remember that I am running this Derby and unfortunately I do not have the ability to be in two places at once, I think it is reasonable to have Reaction as a starting point for everybody... if you can't make it because of this reason then that is too bad..... I do however hope you make the drive
cheers TH

On another note I am thinking of getting hats made for this event, my company is willing to foot half of the bill so that everybody that enters will get a Derby hat !!! the entry fee will have to go up $5 as a result but I think it would be a cool idea.... let me know what you think, is it worth an extra $5 to get a nice quality derby hat that can be a keepsake???

Hey Rick.

The hat idea sounds pretty good. All that for only $5 more I am in. Did you manage to pick up the prize I left at reaction yet.

Also just a reminder to everyone that Hatch Matchers is having their ladies day on Sunday Dec 2nd. There will be some really nice door prizes from pontoon boat, sage fly rod package to gift certificate worth $150.

Hey Rick,i think hats are not a bad idea i ve got quite a collection of hats so why not one more,Just a couple of things to think about though, with the final numbers of people attending the derby not known until derby day it will be just guess work on how many hats to have made and you may not have enough or possibly to many, maybe you could get enough hats made to give out to the winners of the derby and a few for draw prizes ,still charge 25 bucks to pay for the hats and what is left over ,if any ,donate it to the the finall total for the fundraiser.i don't know were you will be ordering the hats from but in most cases it takes up to two weeks from the time of your order to have the hats made up,which ends up in more guessing on the numbers required.

I am thinking of getting a hat made that could be used for years to come, in other words not putting any dates or numbers on it lol, this way if there are too many I can save them for next year.... I get the hats made through my company, that is a big part of what we do... I can get them to the embroiderer and finished in about three days , so I should be able to wait right until the final week to get a head count

Nosey is coming from Hope I think, so I can see why he wouldn't want to drive to Whatcom then back to the Vedder. Perhaps someone local (Chris? ;) ) can register a few local individuals at Lickman Timmy's and hand the information and money to Rick later on? Just a suggestion. :)

Im sure they wouldnt mind a few extra customers coming through there doors.
The biggest reason is because I can't be everywhere at the same time, it is too much work for me to set up multiple sign ins, aswell as get to the river and get the weigh in and lunch etc setup, I have already offered to sign up some people over the internet and have them pay me at the weigh in... I believe this will take care of any problems there may be... for most people RFT is a convenient location to sign up in the morning...

it would be great if we could start posting who exactly is going to attend and what kind of food item you are able to bring... as well as tables chairs, firewood, tarps if we need them etc ..... as was mentioned in previous posts, if you are unable to make it to RFT for the morning sign in would you please send me an e-mail at thickrick@bodybuilders.com and let me know... as long as you pre register with me I will accept your entry fee at the time of the weigh in/ lunch..

Hey Rick you can count me in. I had a great time last year meeting up with everyone even though it was so damn cold in the early morning hours. Constantly had to break
ice from the eyes of my rod if I lingered to long but it was all worth it to meet the gang and see a few familiar faces. Last year I brought pastries, cake and a variety of chips and at this point I have'nt the foggiest as to what I will bring this time around. Do want to thank you though Rick and all the other volunteers for all the work and time you're investing in this outing. I will let you know within the next week what I will bring Rick, thanks again. :)

I am going to get some tickets out to RFT in the next few days for anyone that wishes to prepay, you will still have to show up on the morning of Jan 20th to validate your ticket unless you are on of the people who makes special arrangements with me...

Just so I know where is the cedar run?

Also for the fly-division do you just skip trying to catch a fish and go straight to the draw? ;)

Since we are only a few weeks away from the Derby, I think it would be a good time now to start figuring out what kind of food items each person will be able to bring to the luncheon....

I am going to be providing anything that can't be brought by others... I am going to provide hot chocolate for sure, maybe some danishes for dessert, I am bringing all the tables/tents/BBQ etc... we are going to need hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, sandwiches, dessert, pop plus anything alse we can think of !! I also have some firewood set aside for the fire to keep warm :) if anyone else has some wood please let me know ahaead of time

I am pretty sure that we will have Venison Chili again this year which was a huge hit last year courtesy of Thomas....

We will have the Coffee again from Tim Horton's, not 100% positive yet but I think Reaction Fly and Tackle have offered to provide the Coffee this year

please take the time to read this and let me know what you can bring
Thx

To all,  the money being raised could go to diverting the water away from the Ranger Run slide, Last year i contacted David Lamson (president of CRAC), if he had some cashola last year when it was low , they could of maybe got the river back down the Old Ranger Channel and prevented the high coloration of the river and silting of the gravel, Just a thought. If anyone knows David personally inquire about  CRACS needs as the money spent there does good things

Hi Cammer, the CRAC was my first choice to donate to as it was the cause we donated to last year.... unfortunately we approached David this year about donating the money to him and he was not interested :(  I guess the small amount we manage to raise isn't enough .. after alot of thought and suggestions I contacted Frank with SDA and he was more than happy to come to our Derby and receive the money.

Chilliwack River Action Committee

They don't have enough money, they just need a lot more than what is usually given by private citizens due to the complexity of the projects involved. Contact Dave Lamson for more info:

Have we settled on who the proceeds from this derby will be donated to?

I personally would like to see this money used for the chilliwack river exclusively, and not donated to an organization for alternate or general fishing interest use.

Yes I can not wait either. Hopefully my new pin will be here in time. The long range forecast for next week looks to put the river back in perfect shape. Speaking of river I still can not believe that crac would not accept our donation as this is a quote from their web page,
"All interested in preserving the health and sustainability of the Chilliwack River Watershed for future generations are urged to support".
Oh well at least the SDA will put it to good use. Has there been any more confirmed prizes?
