Title: Which rod
Post by: bbronswyk2000 on December 24, 2006, 08:21:54 PM
So I am going to be purchasing a Calcutta 300CTE in the next week. Trying to decide on which rod to match it up with. Wish I had more money but the Calcutta is setting me back over $400 so I only have about $200 to spend on the rod. I was looking at a St.Croix so thats an option.

What other rods should I look into in the $200 price range.

They had some nice g loomis's and lamiglasses at reaction. Would be a perfect match.

Lamiglass was another one I am looking at. I have 2 other Lamiglass rods but kinda wanted something new and different.

You can buy two Convergence rods - you'll need to pack two so you'll have extra parts when the first one breaks.

seriously -my favorite rod is my Dave Vedder Lamiglass.

Look at the Sage products - sometimes you can get a sweet deal this time of the year.

It costs a bit more, but I picked up a G-Loomis Frontier STR 1263. Very nice rod though.

HiYa BB! Merry Christmas!!

As you likely know, I generally use an Islander CP when plying the flow. But amongst my back-up set-ups, there is a St. Croix 10.5' Wild River rod, the lighter version that is (14 lb test max). It has landed a couple hundred steelhead thus far, and coupled with the 5501 is a sweet light set-up! Has outlasted an HMX and an IM-7 having been in my hands now for over 5 years. That says a lot, as I am generally pretty tough on rods, kinda goes with the territory. If that's the one you end up with, I'm certain you'll be pleased with it!!

Oh, and Congrat's on the Frog Boat Buddy!! ;D

Cheers,
Nog

P.S. I'm hoping my spring creek pram comes tomorrow...then we can race... :D

Hey Bryan,

I have the same reel (Shimano 300 TE) on a Sage 2106b. A great combo.

As far as the St Croix "Wild River" (8-14 lb) goes ..... this is a great Steelhead & Coho rod! I have one, and used it for about 5 seasons before I got my Sage.

check out Lamiglas. I heard that they have a new deal on warranty up here in BC now and you can get very quick turn around time if some sort of bad luck happens and you break the rod somehow. Stillwater Sports out here in Delta had them on sale before xmas and you could most likely still get the same deal if you asked.

you may want to double check the warranty deal on St. Croix now. I think it may have changed from the lifetime deal. Worth checking out.

Wild River rods have a 5-year conditional warranty.
