That's a Ratfish!
Crazy looking things... My brother and sister caught one off the dock in Bamfield when they were young kids, and the blood curdling screams were heard from across the campsite as they ran away from the dock... Too funny!

Hi, nice fish.
I do not know what species it is, but It is a chimera, a cartilaginous fish, like the sharks and rays.

I hope it helps

Thanks Nicole, it was amazing, the body was extremly soft and the gold on its body was like real gold also its eyes were luminous at night.

you're both right. the fish belong to the chimaeridae family.
supposed to be edible, but leaves a wicked after taste. :P
i used to catch them off mudge bay.

Definately a ratfish. Catch a few of them in the summer with guests, they always want to keep them thinking they are "pretty" ??? Never killed one, and wouldn't recommend it.

Caught a number of those when I was a kid fishing off the docks at Sunset Marina in West Van. Very interesting looking fish. Never killed one though.

That's no ratfish...That's my Mother In law ...she must have fallen off her broom again and landed in the water...

When fishing cowichan bay, we would catch them relatively regularly...biggest one we ever caught was maybe 3.5 bls!
While it doesnt show in the picture, I remember this spiny club type thing that rested in an indentation between their eyes....very freaky fish for a young kid!!!!

For me it is a nice looking fish, but I am addicted to fishing and to evolutionary biology (I know, it's weird), so I am biaised ::)

We used to catch them all the time while mooching....that one has a particularily attractive coloration in my mind...not ugly at all.
