Title: Bodybuilding Thread!!
Post by: Big Steel on March 11, 2006, 08:42:39 PM
I know that there is one on another forum, but I was wondering if there was anyone here at Rod's were interested in bodybuilding as well.  So this is for the gym rats, or those that just want to stay in, or get into shape!!!  Everyone is welcome to give up and tips or programs that they would like!! ;D
I have been back training for about a month, was way to long of a break from the gym!!! Many injuries had helped keep me away.  But I am feeling much healthier now, have totally changed my lifestyle!!!  No more junk food and Coke!! ::)  I love it, don't know why it took me so long to get back into it!!! ;)

Work out 4-5 times a week to stay in shape. Not into bodybuilding.

my new job will get me into shape (or kill me first) I'll find out Monday when I start. I'll be working at Kal Tire Commercial division (changing commercial vehicle tires) 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week. What better exercise routine, and I'll get paid to do it :)

Good job on the job RD, I know that you were looking for a decent one!!  There is one adage that I have always used, work is fine to help a person stay in shape for a while, but eventually, your body will get used to what it's doing and work will become just work!! WIll have next to no effect on ones ability to get into shape!!.  My reason for thois analogy, well, I am a thermo-former.  What that means is that my job involves left a lot of heavy Hot-tubs around, and working with a maasive oven all day.  That oven, is always around 500 degrees F!!!!  Also, I have to manipulate the sheet we use to form the hot tub, while it is at about 500 deg. as well!!  We are basically doing an Aerobic workout all day!!!  For the first while, I was doing good, and this was helping me, but as time went on, and the body adapted to the conditions I was putting it under, that job ceased to have an effect on being used as a workout!!!  Now, 5 years later, I had found that I had actually fattened up, it didn't matter that I was sweating for 8 hrs a day!  But now that I have begun my training again, I again feel better, and guess what, my job has become even easier!!!  Which is a rather nice side effect!! ;)

I'm usually at the gym just about every day of the week, (when I'm not fishing of course). I usually alter between one day on weights and one day cardio.  I just started doing cardio about 2 months ago and I can already run a 5:30 mile.  :o Of course I have always been a pretty good runner even when I wasn't doing it frequently. Did anyone here ever have to do the beep test when they were in highschool? The last time I ever did it was in grade 9 when I got 110 on it.  ;D

Used to hit it up pretty hard, but in the last few years slacked due to the job i had travelling quite a bit.

Also changed my workout focus from getting bigger, to staying as strong and flexible at 175lbs so I don't have to move up to the next weight class in bjj/sub grappling.

Still have my lifetime membership at fitness world, think I might get back in there and hit it again for summer, fill out my shirts a bit better again  ;)

I wish there was a cool gym downtown with a convertible roof, no neon, better music. Or maybe even an outdoor pit like Venice Beach, would be nice to get a tan while working out, although with the weather here, it would soon become a rust pile :D

That Venice Beach like thing would be pretty cool, but you are right about the rust pile!!! ;D
We decided to go to a 4 day cycle, work on isolation and intensity.  Had a good buffer period for the last 6 weeks, so time to turn up the pressure again!!  Had been doing a 6 day cycle, but the by the time we got around to starting the next cycle, we felt that we had had to much rest on certian muscle goups.  So, nothing better then a change up!!! ;) ;D

Ricks a good guy. Hes a wide guy too LOL. Short and wide. The short guys always bug me since its easier for them to look big. For every one of my reps they are doing two. I am just maintaining right now. Not in the mood to start something before my trip to Mexico in May. I workout 6 days a week 2 hours a day. Follow a regimented diet, do plenty of cardio and weights and have a six pack to show for it LOL. I also spend about $200/month in supplements. Allot of it goes right to protein. Other staples in supplements for me are a multi vitamin, glutamine, vitamin C, creatine, and BCAA's. Their are others that I use but it depends on what my current goals are. You just need to watch out for the "latest craze" like the new one Gakic. It claims to give you instant increaes of 10% on your lifts. I say bull****. I dont like the maker MuscleTech either as I have never trusted their products and they are over priced.

One day I will come to your store to talk business Rick and maybe we could go for a workout together as well.

sounds good.... I think the fact that I am  247 pounds has something to do with the reason I look wide though hahaha  ...

I have a show coming up in August .. I am starting my diet in April... maybe I will post updates on here.. keep it interesting.. is there anyone else on this site that has ever concidered getting on stage?????

by the way you are right when you say there is a lot of garbage on the market.. Gakic and anything else by Muscletech is overpriced and never performs like they claim...  when I sell something in my store it means I have tried it and it works.. and I don't carry any Muscletech haha...  there are a few supplements that have come out lately that are frickin amazing..
if you wanna know more let me know
cheers Rick

After seeing your pics........ :o :o :o

In all seriousness though I wouldn't mind throwing another 15lbs onto my frame. But that will have to wait until the summer as I always seem to plateau or loose weight while I'm up at school. I'm also not too sure about the protien I use. I'm not too big on supplements but I do go thorugh quiet a bit of the cheap protien from superstore.

I have thought about entering shows but I would need to get to the next level. Maybe its something you could help me with. I will get some pics together and put them in my album for you to see where I am at right now and what you think I need to do. Hopefully I can get together with you soon, just hard with my wife making all these plans lately. I'll be in touch.

hey biffcan... that stuff you buy from superstore is very low quality protein.. you would definately be better off using a higher quality whey protein at least 80% level... the thig is if you come visit me I can give you a great deal on some good stuff.. it will not be that much more than what you are paying for the superstore stuff

and Eddie yeah for sure if you want some pointers come see me.. we can work something out

In that case, I'll swing by next time I'm in town.

What exactly do you mean by 80% level? Does that mean that it contains 80g of protien per 100g of powder?
Title: Re: Bodybuilding Thread!!
Post by: TrophyHunter on March 15, 2006, 03:23:40 PM
yeah thats exactly what it means.. usually a good quality blend is in the 80's and a really good quality isolate is in the 80's to lower 90's and they are 100% whey...  whey is the most easily absorbed protein.... and the stuff that has soy protein is bad for males.. because it raises the estrogen levels in the system and causes muscle atrophy

I have two favorite proteins. The one I use the most is the Dymatize Elite Whey ( best tasting IMHO ) and second to that is Optimum Nutrition's Whey. I love both brands and trust anything made by either of these companies.I really want to try ON's Complex but having a hard time finding it here as most places wont carry it because of the price. I can always order it online which is what I may do.

The Dymatize is ok.. I actually stopped carrying it because too many people returned it claiming they hated the taste, mainly because it was too sweet..I personally couldn't stand it!!! optimum nutrition is also good.. I carry  IDS " innovative delivery systems, Ultimate Nutrition, Champion Nutrition, Allmax, Kaizen, QSE and BIO X... these are all very good quality and they are all approved.. which means what they say they contain is what they actually contain.. alot of companies have been busted for listing false % of proteins ...  I know there are alot of other great brands but I can only carry a certain # there are just too many.. so I chose the ones which I think are the best quality and value and sell those....

Dymatize is sweet and thats what I like about it. I used Bio-X for years when I was in my early 20's and loved it as well. For protein bars I love my Protein 2 Go bars the White Chocolate Avalanche just yummy!!!

Well, it seems like there is a bit of attention being payed to this now!!!  Good, I hope that some more people pipe up and decide to start "getting into shape".  ;D ;D
So, I don't know where to start, so why don't I get right to it!!I little background on myself.  When I was 16, being real thin, and not having much power to back up my punches and kicks, I decided to start training to simply add strength.  I weighed in at a meager 120 lbs at 5' 9"!!!!  My mom was really into nutrition, and I had studied many different ways of training before I actually did any.  SO I had a decent idea of what to do, and form, not weigh was my focus.  What do you know, I guess that I had my Dad's genetics(he was huge without ever lifting a weight), after 6 solid months, I was up to 150lbs and feeling good, still at about 6% body fat!!  Then my goals started to change, I suddenly wanted to get bigger.  Changed the workout, and another 6 months had gone by I was 165lbs, now in a year I had gained 45lbs and grew a bit over an inch as well!!
Again, goals changed, I wanted to be a bodybuilder now, and fighting had sort of taken a back seat!!!  So, I changed my diet to 10000 calories a day, and didn't really worry about putting on a little fat.  After another year, WITH NO STERIODS, as I was between 17-18, I was up to around 245 lbs, benching over 450 for sets and Military pressing over 400lbs for sets!!  started to become freakish to my family, but they were impressed by my intensity and dedication.  Over the next year, off eating, sleeping and training, also working, but not that much, as I still lived at home, at one point I made it to the heaviest I had ever been, 282lbs.  Had a bit of a gut though, and there was a tourney coming up in Nova Scotia that I wanted to enter.  SO I started dieting and made it down to 245lbs at 5-7 % bodyfat.  I thought that I looked pretty good, and finished 2nd in prejudging.  You'll never guess what happened that night, I got hit by a car on my motorcycle and was in the hospital for what seemed like forever and was off my feet for around a year.  That finished my ambitions.  Dropped to 160lbs, and could never really get it going again.  I did for a year here and a year there, but never put anything consistant together.
But it seems different this time, since I found out my dad was dying, it gave me a much better focus.  For 7 weeks now, my mindset has been strong and getting stronger with each workout.  I started training about 6 weeks ago, after getting the diet in check.  When I started I was 228lbs with a decent, but not huge gut.  I had been down to 201lbs upon arriving back from Winnipeg after my dads passing, but over the last two weeks, now that I am sleeping and eating properly again, was difficult for a bit there, I have put on a bit of weight and am back up to 207lbs.  The abs are coming along fairly well, and I am happy.
I have not been using anything (supplements) as of yet, just eating right and sleeping.  The recovery after a workout has been rather surprising, but we'll see if that continues now that I have again turned up the pressure.  Any tips on what I might need to start using, as I have a feeling that I will plateau sooner or later would be greatly appreciated.
Rick, I will be in touch regarding this issue, as well Brian, if you have any other input that would be great.  Also Rick and Brian, along with anyone else, feel free to post some pics.  I might as well, I wish that I had some from back when, but I have moved all the way across the country and don't know where they made it to over the last 12 years!!!
I'm sure that there will be some good critiques on what each of us need to improve on, which could come in handy because sometimes we don't see what others do.
Also, my biceps have been notorious hard gainers over the years, so any tips on what else I could do, or if I might be doing to much.  This is what I am doing for them right now.
The first 2 rotate monthly.  Alternate dumbell curls  and Ez bar barbell curls.  4 sets after a light warm up.  Keeping reps between 10-12 on all sets.  Next, and one of my favorites, cable preachers with either curl bar or straight bar.  4 sets, all sets between 10-12 reps, with no neg reps on last set.
I finish with Concentration curls. 4 sets 10-12 reps.  This is the bi workout I finally came up with that actually works for me, but any other input is always welcome.
This seems to be long enough, so I will end it there for now.  If you can get all the way through it then great, if not then I'm sorry!!! :-[ ;D

Thanks for sharing Big Steel. I've got a fairly similar story. After during my first year of school I started off at the gym, mostly to put on muscle for hockey. I started off at 165 and then worked out from half way through the school year until the end of the summer at which point I was up to 182 without touching a supplement. Unfortunatly I was in a horrible bike accident that hospitalized me for 2 weeks after which I was back down to my original weight. Even worse I was unable to lift a weight for several months. After I was somewhat healed I hit the gym again, this time even harder and with the aid of protien bars and powder. I eventually got back up to 185 by the end of my second year but once more I had to go back in for additional surgery which took me out for another month, which proptly sent me back down another 10lbs. After yet another recovery I continued at the gym for the rest of the summer, by the end of which I was up to 188. Unfortunaly, this past year I've had a nagging rotator cuff problem that continues to sideline me on and off. As of today I'm sitting at 182, and am still working to put the weight back on. On the plus side, however, I'm now boasting awsome cardio.

Sounds good Sterling, keep it up!!!  In thinking about it, I at times think that the accident was a good thing.  I was a mean, nasty person who wouldn't go out looking for a fight, but one seemed to find me quite a bit.  The accident got me thinking that I wasn't happy being in a bad mood, and the Ego thing was pretty bad.  It changed me in goods ways, but one never knows where i would be right now if it hadn't had happened. :o
Biff, when you are in town, let me know.  I'll take you to my gym, is a great place to workout, and isn't that busy.  I can always get on what I need, when I need it!!!  Funny none of this came up in all those hrs we spent on the river!!! :o ;D
I don't have any ambitions at the moment on where this will take me, I just have an urge to keep it up and see how I do now.  I am 32, just wish that I had started up fulltime years ago!!  Or was able to keep it going when I did start!! ;D

I have a few questions: What is the difference between high weights and low repetition vs. low weights and high repetition ?

Well, generaly, high weight is for gaining strength and size.  Low weight, high reps is for getting lean and losing weight.  But, which muscle group you work also has an effect on how much weight and reps one should do.  Some muscle groups react differently than other muscle groups to high weight, low reps.  Biceps for instance work well with isoloation, keeping your form strict and not doing a lot of weight.  Keeping the reps at about 12.  Whereas, chest is a bigger muscle group and you could get better results from doing 6-8 reps and more weight!!

Thanks for sharing your story... it is awesome that you are re-motivated ... so now it is time to kick some my friend and get it happening again!!

My story isn't so great but I will tell it anyways

I come from a very small family.. as in size that is!!  ... when I was in grade nine I was 5'2'' and about 120 lbs soaking wet... but that didn't stop me from being huge into sports.. I was playing soccer, rugby, and I was wrestling on my highschool team... one thing about being small was that I was very fast ..... my older brother always had weight problems due to a thyroid problem and I was always concerned that the same was going to happen to me so I was always very aware of my weight!! well in the early spring of my grade nine year I started packing on a ton of weight.. to the point that I started to get FAT!!! so here I was at 5'2'' and now weighing almost 150 lbs... I was mortified... so I started training in the gym at school... I started doing 200 pushups and situps everynight before I went to sleep.. and before I knew it I was actually gaining muscle..I could flex my arms and there was actually muscle there  lol....  what I noticed the most was that sports were getting easier... I was very strong in wrestling and I was getting better at soccer and Rugby and I also had plans on joining the football team...

The summer between grade nine and ten was a weird time for me... I grew almost 9 inches in just a few months... when I got back to school in grade ten I had gone from 5'2'' to 5'11'' it was crazy I had all sorts of growing pains and knee problems.. but the worst part was now I was skinny as hell hahaha.. so I started working out harder and harder and eating like crazy....I got a membership at Golds gym and started really training hard... over the next couple of years I gave up Rugby and football and wrestling and decided that I wanted to be a pro soccer player... I played on elite teams and played in Provincial championships... I made it to the point where I was being scouted for a low level pro team.... which was right at the time where I broke my arm.. and two weeks later playing in a scouted game I came down hard with two players on top of me and cracked my left kneecap..... that was the end of my soccer carreer..   :-[ :-[

I started Kung Fu and was training very heavy in the gym.. I always dreamed about competing on stage but just never got around to doing it.. so I just kept training and eating and training to the point where I was getting pretty Buff I thought :)....  It wasn't until I met a guy at the gym who wanted to compete very badly and he saw that I had potential.... I had just turned 29 years old... well after he convinced me to travel to Kamloops to see a show with him I was hooked... him and I became training partners and we trained soooo hard.. in that first year I gained over 20 pounds of lean muscle...by june of the next year at the age of 30 i stepped on stage for the first time at 196 lbs at 4% bodyfat and took home a fourth place out of ten....

So here I am now almost 6 years and 5 shows later... I took last year off completely from competing to pack on some more size... this year I am doing two shows.. I am doing the BC's in Richmond on Aug 19th and I will be travelling to Manitoba to compete at the Canadian Nationals in September.. at this time I am 247 pounds and I begin my diet in April... hoping to hit the stage at around 220 shredded this year and I am confident I will be taking the first place heavyweight and overall trophies home with me this time!!!!   well I am hoping anyways hahaha

I am going to post a couple of pics from the last show I competed in ...  this was in 2004 at the BC's I was 211 pounds and I took home 2 nd place in the Heavyweights....

Rick let me know what you think of this goal. As you know I want to get involved in competing. So since I am going to Mexico in late May I will just continue to keep myself lean. I might as will keep myself lean all summer. So starting in September I will start to bulk up and add strength and size. I want to have my first show early next year. Do you think that its an attainable goal?
Title: Re: Bodybuilding Thread!!
Post by: TrophyHunter on March 17, 2006, 05:27:20 PM
it sounds like a great goal... just gotta make sure your legs are equal to your upper body.. in competition it is very imortant to have great balance..most people have great upper bodies and not so great legs...

Never had a problem with my legs size wise. I could use a little more definition in them and I am sure that will come. Being a former hockey, football and baseball player my legs were always pretty big. I train legs just as often as every other body part.

Thats an awesome pic of your Dad... my dad was kinda like that to.. never touched a weight but he always had great arms and huge forearms.. even though he was a light weight... you should put the pics up anyways man... then we can see the improvements over the next while!!!!  as for tickets for the show they will be on sale eventually on ticket master.. the show is at the River Rock Casino this year  should be kinda cool
Yeah, I always thought that he was a bit of a freak, them when I saw him lift the backend of a truck full of wood, I knew he was a freak!!!!  Guess that is where I get some of my strength from!!
Pictures you say, well funny thing, I was talking to the girlfriend about that, showed her your pics and Brian's, she thought that it was a good idea as well, so we took some!!!  So here it goes I guess!!  Keep in mind it has only been 6 well, maybe 7 weeks since I started training for the first time in a long while!!  Since I did abs yesterday, I didn't realing get a decent pump going as I had a hard training day today, didn't want to push it, I just started flexing!!  Anyhow, enough talk, here they are!! :-[

You sure have the size. Really big traps. You must have some good genes. I have crappy genes as my family all has small frames on tall bodies. Cardio and diet will rip it right up. Just remember its all about calories in/calories out, burn more calories than you consume and you will lose the weight. Have you ever tried HIIT ( High Intensity Interval Training )? If not I could explain it as its a great way to train and lose fat fast.

Thanks Brain, I guess that I do have the ability to put on the size without a problem, I seem to be able to take off the fat with the intensity of my workouts!!!  I have been losing a fair amount of fat percentage at the moment, you should have seen me 6 weeks ago, no definition at all, with a belly that bounced when I went down some stairs!!!  I have tried the Hiit program, when I was training for my first tournament about 14 years ago!!!  But I veried it up a bit.  If I feel over the next month that I am not progressing enough in the area, I'll hit you up for a refresher on it!!
As for my traps, I have never trained them, at least on purpose, mainly because they were always big!!  I had to work everything around them harder to keep the rest up with them!!  I guess that I can thank my Dad, god bless his soul!!!   ;)
I felt good at the workout today, got my bench up to 280lbs for 12 reps on 2 sets!!!  Now I guess that I'll see if I can break the 220lb barrier tomorrow with shoulders on the military press!!!  I love this higher iintensity training, just have to remember to not over do it!!!   ::) ;D

You sure are strong. I have certain exercises that I am weak at. Bench has always been one of my weaker exercises. I can do 220lbs but I my strength is with dumbells. When I do dumbbell presses I can do 110lb dumbbells where I should be able to do more with the bench press. The straight bar I guess is my nemesis. Maybe because when I was young I seen two of my friends seriously injure themselves on the bench press and the fear is still with me. Maybe one day Rick, yourself and I can get together and hit the gym.

Sounds good to me!!!  I like working out with new people sometimes!!!  Mainly because I like to steal workouts or portions of workouts that seem like they would work for me!!!  You know, seeing things from a different way never hurts!!
I guess the strength just comes natural.  Apparently, when I was 4, I don't really know if this is true or not, eventhough my mom seemed to collaborate my brothers story, I got mad and pounded on my brothers door, guess what, I busted it down!!!  Yeah I am still calling BS on it myself!!!!  Anyhow, I have always been able to do a decent amount of weight that I was happy with, not expecting to get real strong or big!!!!  Just want to take better care of myself then I had been.  But now I have to bug, so I'll just see how it goes!! ;D

I don't nessicarily think that what I am lifting right now is heavy, as I am doing that weight for isolation!!  On chest, i was using 280 for 12 slow reps on a couple of sets, and shoulders was the same deal.  Right now I am working on isoloation on everything, aas I feel that has more benefits then lifting heavy.  II like to feel each muscle fiber twitch on each rep!!
By the way, who are you talking to roe kid?? ::)  I'll leave it at that for now and await your reply.

Well, I thought that I would post again, as I just got back from doing legs!!!  I used to hate doing legs after the accident, but you know what I am starting to not mind them so much again!! ;D  I feel that I am doing some respectable weight and that I am making some improvements on them.  Just a little annoyed that I won't be able to get them all the way back to what they had looked like before you know what!!  One leg, my left, is now shaped a bit different than the other one.  But I will keep at it and see how it goes.  Haven't missed a workout yet, and I am getting more inspired and intense with each workout.  Maybe in another 6 weeks I'll do some more pics if there is any improvement!! ;)

I did Chest & Bi's today. Did 110lb dumbbells for 8 reps on my DB Bench press which is pretty good. Needed a liftoff though. I have always had strong bi's like today I did 60lb dumbbells for 8 reps, but my biceps are only 16.5''. Just started to add more protein to my diet and more calories to try and gain some needed size. I dont want to lose any of my lean muscle so I am going to try and do a clean bulk.

Rick I e-mailed you about a certain supplement, can you get back to me on it? I actually returned this supplement after reading up on it.

As far as people asking about steroids dont ask on a public forum ask it in a PM if you want to know so bad.

Back & Tri's tomorrow. Going to hit those pullups hard!!!

Good job Eddie!!!  Sounds like a great workout!! ;D  I have Bi's and Chest tomorrow!!!  One of my favorite workouts!!  I think that I'll stick with the workout plan I have going right now for a bit and see what it does!!  As I said before my Bi's seem to be hard gainers, but I feel that this workout will do the trick for a while, if not, then I have something else planned for them!! ;)

Well as soon as I shut the store down today I am off to do a crazy puke bucket quad workout.. any one care to join me????  ;D ;D  today is Barbell Squat followed by one legged leg press, then hack squats followed by leg extensions and then finish her off with C & C squats.... after this workout if you aren't blacking out or puking ....... add weight  :o :o :o  seriously though doing this intense workout once every week and a half has taken my quads from 27" in 2004 to a respectable 31"
today....... the problem is when you leave the gym you can't even hold your own body weight up anymore.. you have to walk with your knees locked or you are going down hahahaha  and believe it has happened to me before ... usually in a very embarrasing place too..... ::)

I have thought about doing the one legged leg presses, but I figured that I would give it a bit yet!!!   :)
I haven't measured anything yet ( arms, legs or chest).  Don't usually care how big they are.  Just trying to keep everything looking right.  But I just might for curiosity sake!!

Than you also found nothing to suggest anyone here uses illegal drugs. Already excited about tomorrows workout. I picked up some supplements over the weekend ($300 worth) and today decided to pick up another new multi vitamin. Went with the Animal Vitamin pack after hearing such great things about this product. So how many people buy a ton of supplements? Also how much protein do you intake per day. After calculating todays totals I am up to about 225grams of protein today. Todays dinner was two chicken breasts, a salad, and some carrots. My kids are also eating healthy.

Well, to be honest with you BB, I am not sure how much protien I am intaking!!!  Suppose I will have to add it up!!!  I am thinking somewhere around 200 to 250 grams with some quick math.  I am also probably just above that in carbs.  But, I have been thinking about getting some supplements.  Not using anything as of yet, just working with intensity and eating a lot and healthy.  With as much sleep as I can get.  I feel that I am doing well right now, but I wonder what I'd be able to do if I were to take some. :o :D  Supplements (legal of course) that is!!  I am drinking a fair amount of milk and a ton of water. :)
So as of right now, I am not taking anything. Reason being, MONEY!!!!  I don't have much right now, but I hope that will change!!!!  Wink Wink, check the buy and sell page!!  Nudge Nudge!! :D :D

For some reasno my wife doesnt mind me buying so many supplements and spending that kind of money on them. Now if I was spending that much money on fishing gear she would have my head.

Here are my staples of supplements:
Whey Protein
Multi Vitamin
Vitamin C
Glutamine
BCAA's
Tribulus
EFA
Creatine ( cycled- on one month off one month )
Fat burner ( when going lean )

I dont take anything illegal or something that would harm me.

Hey Roe Kid it isn't a big deal....  it is something that gets asked of me alot especially when I am close to a competition.... the fact of the matter is when I compete I have to take a urine test and a lie detector test to prove that I am clean.... so I hope you can guess the answer on whether I use them or not....

I think the fact that I have been hitting the weights since three years befiore you were born has something to do with the size that I am ....  :o
Title: Re: Bodybuilding Thread!!

Not offended either. Maybe just read what you wrote before hitting the post button. I get asked in the gym if I am using anything by young guys all the time. I just tell them that its nothing but hard work and time.

Did back & tri's today. Felt pretty good but could have done better if people would have left me alone. Some people like to socialize and I am not one of them. I did dumbbell rows today and used 100lb dumbbells so I was happy with that. Wish I could get my CGBP up a bit as I was only lifting 155lbs, had no spotter around so I could not lift more or try. The smith machine is broken otherwise I would have used that to add more weight.

I have a question for you Rick. Have you experimented much with reverse grip bench press? I have heard that using this grip can add size to your chest faster than a regular grip. Can you let me know your opinion? Thanks.

Post by: Big Steel on March 21, 2006, 01:02:05 PM
Well, I just got back from the gym.  I was not expecting what happened today!! :o  When I got there I wasn't feeling that good about myself this morning, felt weak and thin!!!  That happens sometimes I guess, but today it made me a bit mad.  So, I trained even harder on Bi's, which felt good, did some heavy hammer curls, cable preachers, and concentration curls.  Felt a bit better about myself at that point.  I went on to do chest, started off ok, was doing some wide grip chest.  After my warmup set, decided to punish myself and go a bit heavier than usual. So by my third set I was up to 290lbs.  Was able to squeeze out 12 reps.  Then I was just going to go up another 20 lbs. BUT, One of the guys I had met there, all 315lbs of him, came over and said don't wimp out and that he had seen my last set, told me to take off the 35 lb plates and put 2 more 45's on each side!!!  Well I thought that he was nuts, but he wouldn't back down from it and egged me on so I figured, WTF might as well.  I am sitting there getting ready for my set, thinking about it with 405 lbs on there, then out of nowhere, I felt a bit of a rage come on and said NOW!!!  Well, 8 reps plus 2 forced reps later I was done the set and found myself a bit stupified!!!  Felt good though. Finished of the wide grip with 310 lbs for another 8 reps!!!  After the workout, I am feeling it, but I am also more pumped(mentally)then ever.  I also didn't feel thin and weak anymore!!!  Needless to say, I am a bit surprised! So bring on shoulders and back tomorrow!!!   ;)
BB as for your only doing 155 on close grip, I wouldn't worry as much about that. For me Close grip has always been an isoloation burn.  I do three sets at the end of my chest workout with the last set being a drop weight set and concentrate on getting as much blood into the area as I can.  I am usually only doing about 135 lbs and squeezing like crazy till I can't even do 50 lbs anymore, that ends my chest workout!!
Title: Re: Bodybuilding Thread!!
Post by: TrophyHunter on March 21, 2006, 05:06:38 PM
hey eddie ..... changing any movement up is always a good idea... I don't do the reverse grip anymore myself because I feel it puts too much pressure on my shoulders.... doing one arm at a time dumbell press is another good exercise to change things up a bit..... anything you do with a dumbell that forces you to use stabilizer muscles and strengthens your core is a good exercise.....

on another note it was great to meet you today steel... you are a big boy.... and now your gonna get bigger...  seriously though I couldn't have met a nicer guy.. look forward to fishing and training with you in the future.....

I need to keep my six pack right now as I am heading to Mexico at the end of May. I am kind of just maintaining right now. Maybe add a little size but have to keep lean. I was a linebacker in high school. When I was 17-18 I was 220lbs and very lean.

Just started to train again after 10 years of beer drinking and heavy partying . Made the new years resolution to get myself back into the shape I  once was . Couldn't believe how feeble I have become my bench press has dropped by 80 lbs used to bench 180 for reps . When I started out January 15 I took it easy and was benching 95 for reps and have slowly increased my bench up to 140 for reps feeling way stronger . I'm 5'9 and January 15 weighed 235 lbs not a healthy combo . I'm now 208 lbs every one on my hockey team used to call me Fat Daddy now I'm known as Fit Daddy I have improved my skating immensely I now win foot races for loose pucks and am usually the first forward back on the back check. My goal is to get down to 190 lbs and maintain this from now on . I gave up Beer quit smoking Pot after 18 years of chronic use . Diet has changed dramatically from all that crappy fast food to healthy stuff lowered my carb intake drastically eat lots of meats , steamed veggies , raw veggies , salads , Vector cereal for breakfast , never used to eat fruit now it's part of my daily diet . My energy levels have gone through the roof lung capacity has probably doubled feel 10 years younger. Supplements I'm taking are Creatine monohydrate , multi vitamines ,  glutamine , salmon oil , green tea extract , whey protein powder. Since I started taking the supplements my strength has increased the recovery time of sore muscles cut in half and energy to spare all day long . Having a hard time pushing myself as hard as I would like due to a Hernia the reason I stopped working out to begin with I find it hurts if I go to heavy or after a ab work out especially the next day .

A few questions regarding supplements when should you be taking them before your work out , after your work out , first thing in the morning , before bed ? . I'm trying to build lean muscle  is it a good idea to use Creatine I want to loose 20 more lbs since I started using it My weight has stayed the same but the wife says my arms , legs , chest have all gotten bigger. Is this because I'm building muscle ? . I do an hour of Cardio every other day on the Recumbent bike and play hockey two to three times a week . My goal isn't to gain mass but to become more flexible and get a more explosive skating stride . Have been doing Squats , lunges , leg extensions , hamstring curls , calf raises . My abdominal area is not very well conditioned either as mentioned before the Hernia is a real issue when doing crunches or any other ab work out I can't afford to get the surgery done as missing the time away from work is not possible. I have been trying to work through the pain but when I push myself I suffer for a day or two after. The Hernia is small the size of a pea when I first got it the Doctor said it was to small to worry about (idiot) happend while working in Kitimat at Methanex was using 1 1/2 inch drive air impact with a 2 1/2 inch socket doing up a Dollar plate on a Heat Exchanger the gun was over 80 lbs and I was reaching of a scaffold arms fully extended all of a sudden rip through the stomach lining OUCH!.

OUCH!!!!! that sucks!!! Hey Legend Congrats on the weight loss and quitting all the vices..... sounds like you are doing well... for your info on the supplements...  Creatine Monohydrate can be taken anytime during the day .. just like it is part of your diet...  protein powder and Glutamine should be taken together and several times throughout the day...  an example... if you wake at 7am  you should have some carbs ie  cereal and a protein shake... then you should eat your lunch and then have another protein shake between lunch and dinner... when you are training or playing hockey you should be having complex carbs within twenty minutes of finishing ... something like orange juice or a banana.. and then have a protein shake within 45 minutes of finishing... and the last thing you need to remember when it comes to supplements is that you should be buying them from me from now on  ;D ;D ;D remember 20% for anyone on this site!!!!  8)  I also have accelerade in powder form and in gel packs .. they are a favourite amongst hockey players to be taken right before a game for awesome energy levels!!!!

Rick I still have not recieved a reply to my last e-mail.

I never recieved an e-mail ...you asked a question on the forum about bench press and I answered that question ..  send the e-mail again ok

E-mail sent again to your bodybuilders e-mail

I did legs today and had a great workout. Did 3 plates aside on squats for 10 reps without a spotter. Did 6 plates aside on legpress. Also did some deadlifts, leg extensions, lying ham curls and seated ham curls, also did a few ab exercises. Than did 45mins of cardio on the eliptical at level 16 of 20. I use the eliptical since I have bad knees and running on the treadmill aggrevates them.

Sounds like a good workout Eddie!! ;)  I have legs tomorrow!!!  But I am going to change it up a bit!!  Since I am going to destroy my legs, I am no longer doing Calfs with Quads!!!  I'll do calfs on ab day!!  So anyhow, for legs tomorrow, I will start with 5 sets of leg extensions,(I really have to warm up my knees!!)  From there I will move to Hack squats 4 sets, anymore and my kness seem to start stressing to much.  I usually do these fairly light, start at 250 then move up to 300lbs and do 12-15 reps per set. Then One leg Presses, 4 sets, (something the Rick said I should try!) then full on heavy leg presses for another 4 sets, perhaps get back up to 8 plates a side, but we'll see how it feels after the one legged ones!!  From there I stay at the leg press but I change my foot position right to the top of the platform and work on concentration for a ham stretch.  At least that is what changing the postion does for me!!  As I am doing those, between every set I move to ham curls, and do four sets of each.  The stretched leg press and the ham curls.  After all that, I have a hard time walking, and a almost pass out 3-4 times during the workout, but it has seemed to work so far!!! ;)  I have to go as heavy as I can on these, but try to get at least 12 reps on every set!!!

Oh Yeah, and today I did a burner tricep workout and ABs!!!  Couldn't breath after my last set!!!  4 sets of crunches, 5 sets of leg raises, 4 sets of oblique crunches, 5 sets of lower back extensions Every set to failure!!!  For tri's, it was 5 sets of Cable extensions, 4 sets of heavy dumbell behind the neck drops, got to 110lb dumbell on heaviest set for 10 slow reps.  Then reverse grip single arm cable extensions 4 sets, then for good measure 1 drop set at the end to failure, till I coudn't even do 10 lbs!!!  That sure got the blood flowing!! ;D

I dont do calves on leg day. I do my calves on shoulder day. I do allot of isolation exercises with slow reps. Some people have the misconception that more weight equals bigger muscles. Not always true. If you lift fairly heavy with slow reps you will build bigger muscles faster than doing a heavy forced rep workout. When trying to add size I keep my rep range between 5-8 reps with it being as heavy as I can but very slow reps especially on the negative.

BTW I ordered my personal training course and finally going to finish it. I plan on being totally certified within a year. Going to try and do an hour a day, kids permitting LOL

sounds good man... I am already certifiable hahahaha I mean certified.. I love being a trainer... helping others attain their goals is just as rewarding as getting there yourself!!!

when I train legs I break all three groups up ionto different workouts.. I will work quads by themselves, hamstrings on their own day and I throw calves in twice a week.. one day with shoulders the other day with chest or back.....ever since I broke the legs up into different workouts I have acheived greater gains

So today was....  tuff.  Workout wise!!  But it was the last day of my 2 week heavy cycle, so....
Started out with some fairly light leg extensions, 5 sets, only went to 13 plates and got 15 reps out of each set with no problem.  Then it was Hack squats.  4 sets of a$$ to heels, going to 300lbs on the last set.  So the quads are burning good at this point.  But Rick had said that I should do one legged presses, so 4 sets of those getting to 3 plates a side for 12 reps a set.  Didn't figure I was done yet, so on to heavy leg presses, which weren't as heavy as usual, because the one legged ones were killers.  On the started with 4 plates a side on those, went up 2 plates every set for 4 sets, so on the last sets I have 7 plates a side, started really burning at 12 reps, but I got angry and kept going to 21 reps, I could do no more.  Well, my buddy was doing this workout with me, he puked after the 2nd set of presses, but he did finish his last 2 sets, and I, well I went down 3 times.  Twice do to my legs buckling and I couldn't hold up my weight, and after the 4th set of presses went down do to almost passing out, took a knee and couldn't get back up, one of the guys there helped me up while he was busy laughing his my friend off!!!!  I am still a bit lightheaded right now, but at least I can walk, sort of!!!  So thanks a lot Rick, ya jerk!!!! :D ;D ;D  You got me somewhat motivated earlier this week.  But now, I get to go back to the 6 day cycle and the shock therapy is over for a month or two.  Tomorrow, if I can walk, I'll go do some calfs perhaps, maybe forearms.  Sunday is totally off, then back to Chest and Bi's on Monday!!  Hit em hard and then give them 6 days rest!!!  Same for every other muscle group!!!  More rest and sleep now. ;D ;D

I have my all-around day tomorrow, my favorite day!! Its where I do 1-2 exercises per body part. I do exercises I wouldnt normally do and experiment and try to make up new exercises by trying various techniques and positions. Follow it up with 45-60mins of cardio. That reminds me, I must download some new songs to my MP3 player.

Especially with legs I stretch before and after every exercise.... I also always warm up with a 5 min walk before and after my leg days... with other body parts I still stretch before and between sets

You said that I was a whiner!!!!  :o Wimp!!! ;D ;D  Well, I don't have to do legs again until Friday, I am SO looking forward to it!!  No really I am!!!  ::) Have an off-day,well sort of tomorrow!!  I was supposed to do Delts, but after hitting the rest of the upper body hard this week, I figured it would be smart to give the body a days rest before hitting one of my favorite muscle groups!!!  Then, I can hit them even harder!!  So tomorrow, I will do calfs and abs, maybe hammies, depending on time.  Abs usually take me a good 45 min!!! ;)

Damn..don't you guys have any injuries??? I've been back in the gym for the past year and also did a weight program for the boys golf team..yeah that was a big joke...but after two rotator cup tears my bench reaches 240 and my shoulders start to go..i get damn tendinitis in my elbows..and between my knee surgery and broken ankles..i squeak when i walk now :P..I've resigned myself to running every other day now and doing sets of sit ups and push ups...

You try and tell your kids about what sports and military life will do to you if you don't watch out but they listen about as well as i did...and now in my 40's I'm paying for it....

Read the first 2 or 3 pages, we all had and still do have injuries!!!  Some pretty severe!!  But I workout to keep the injuries away now!!!  Seems to be working so far, the back pain has gone away, now it is just the nagging little ones that I work through almost every work out.  Just don't think about them.  I always have a pinched nerve or knee pain or some sort of thing going on!!!  Tendinitis in the elbow and shoulder are the most painful ones, but after the first few sets, it seems to go away!! :)

Hey Golfman... I have become an expert and dealing with and taking care of injuries over the years.... there are many tricks and exercises that you can perform to ease the pain and in some cases get rid of it all together.. there are also many supplements that help your body repair and stop the unwanted pain from coming back.. too bad you don't live closer I would say to come into my store and see me and I could help you out a bit.....

I get about 1 injury a year that takes me out anywhere from 2-6weeks. Last injury was about 4 months ago (knock on wood)

I have a question. When trying to build strength should you:
a) Lift heavy with partial reps
b) Lift as much as you can even though it may not seem like allot with slow full range reps

I did a leg workout and just obliterated them. I started with Squats and got up to 3 plates and could do 6 reps ( which were about 3/4 reps) Than I hit leg press and boy was it weak. I was doing 5 plates aside but could not manage a full controlled reps. I went down to 4 plates and could squeeze out 10 slow complete reps.

My theory is that if I were to consistantly do slow controlled full reps with a lighter weight eventually the weight will just increase in time. 90% of the time I do full reps but never really do the slow movements. I do all my reps controlled and either focus on the negative or positive and alternate between the two. Doing the negative and positive in a slow movement would sound like the best answer.

after lots and lots of reading and experimenting I have come to the following conclusion:

5-8 reps with maximum weight builds strength

8-12 reps with maximum weight builds size

12-20 reps waste of time and means your weight is too small   ;)

by maximum weight I mean the absolute most you can do but still manage the target # of reps
in other words when trying to build strength you will want to use enough weight that you can barely do 6 reps.. but with some help you can pump out 8 and no more...

eat lots...rest lots...fish lots...  ;D

Of course I worked out today. I go a minimum of 5 days a week and normally its 6 days.

I did Abs & Forearms today. Damn people bugging me today and trying to socialize.

Did about 6-8 different ab exercises and 3 different forearm exercises. The wrist curls just destroyed my arms boy were they burning.

I am just trying to maintain right now. I cant even pinch any fat on me right now its all muscle and skin  :) Cant wait for September when I try and do a clean bulk.

I agree and dissagree... First of all i havent posted on this thread but here it is.. I worked out Strong for several years, but i broke my elbows biking 4 years ago and have had bone chips flowing in my elbows since.. Finally this year they REALLY started to bug me so i havent been for 8 months.. I am getting surgery in April and hope to get back to it, as it was a major part of my daily life.. .

As for work outs eddie, your work out plan has to be specific to what you want to do... As for repetitions, they should go something like this:

4-6 - For power output

6-8  To gain general strength (strenghten the "stabilizing muscles" whixh allows you to focus on the muscle beign worked on 100%) and also increases girth of the muscle....

10-15 is for body building (definition) fat burning around muscle tissue... however this is done after the above have been achieved..

also yourl last rep should be acquired with maximum effort and a spotter should be necessary...

I totally disagree with your 10-15 for bodybuiding!!!  high reps for fatburning is a myth... you might aswell be doing cardio!!!!  if you are doing any exercise that you are able to do that many reps then your weight is far too small and you are doing absolutely nothing to stimulate muscle growth.... I have tried all the above on myself and many clients.. and I have read and read and read and everybody thats gets result s comes to the same conclusion.... the other problem I have with that is you say fat burning around muscle tissue... there is no such thing as targeting fat reduction.. fat comes off the body at the same time.. it doesn't come from any one area quicker than another.. if you wanna get ripped in your stomach area you need to be ripped everywhere else... the only thing you can do is increase your overall muscle % in your body which will aid in the burning of fat....

So, I met up with Eddie99 yesterday for a bit of fishing, but that wasn't going that well, so we headed to the Gym for a chest workout!!  Eddie looked good, and he is definitely ready for Mexico!!  Was an OK workout, but lack of sleep and no food yet that day, meant for a bit of a sluggish workout for me!!  I know, I know better than that, but today, I am feeling OK, got a lot of sleep, and ate well lastnight and today!!!  SO I am ready for my week, will do biceps tonight, and tri's and back tomorrow!!  Eddie seemed like he had a pretty good workout, he also seemed to outlift me!!!  Which was cool!!  We wound up doing an isolation workout, and got as much blood pumped into the chest as possible!!  ;D  Just wish I had his definition!! :o ;)  But I suppose that I am working on that slowly!!  Should be prime for July and August!!  Just don't want to lose any size!!  Perhaps even put on some more!! ;D

It was awesome meeting you and spending the day with a new buddy. Workout was pretty good, forgot how much better it was working out with a buddy. Since I workout in the morning when everyone else is at work I never have a buddy to push me. Wish I had BigSteels size with my definition thats for sure. Hopefully we can hook up again for a workout and a sturgeon outing. That would be two workouts in one day  ;)

I only had just over an hour this morning to workout and man did it ever suck. I was feeling lethargic and started cramping about 2/3 of the way through my workout. Not a good day at the gym at all.

We actually thought that as well!!!  But we figured that we should gang up on you when you are a bit nearer your contest shape and hope that you had lost just a bit of strength!!! :o ;D  Because that seemed to be are only hope of not having to be continually changing weight back and forth  after every set!! ;D ;D  Anyhow, we should all get together for one of them Sturgeon/ workout days!!!  Just let me know and I will see about putting somerthing together!!! ;) ;D

I took my girlfriend to the gym yesterday and played trainer. I put her through one of my chest-bi workouts.
Needless to say she was quite sore afterwords. It's not like she doesn't go to the gym, actually she is a finatic, however, after watching her work out I get the impression she is like most girls and just does 15 reps of whatever excersize she is doing to 'burn fat' reguardless of whether she is lifting to failure. I had her doing 10 reps and going to muscle failure. Do you guys think this is a good way to go about doing it? Her goals aren't to bulk up but rather just tone up. I just don't see any sense in doing a ton of reps resulting in no fatigue.

10 reps is perfect!!!  she should be doing enough weight that she can barely lift the last couple....... there is always a misconception that woman are going to get huge if they lift weights... believe me it takes a hell of a lot of training and eating and training and eating and supplements before a woman can put on any size.....if she is eating right and training like you show her she will only get nice lean muscles.. there is no fear of her becoming like Lil Steel!!!! ;D
women are lacking the testosterone required to build large muscles...

Good job Biff, My girl has been bugging me to go to the gym with me when she is finished with the school thing for the year!!  But, she doesn't really want to come out to langley to do it!!  So, I guess that we will seee what happens!!  You wouldn't want to get her to strong for ya though!!! ;D ;D ;D  Hold on a tick, that might be fun!!
Anyhow, I broke down and weighed myself today, as I hadn't for a while!!  I feared that I was losing weight, and that I may had dropped below to 200lb mark, but with comments from some people at work, I fihured what the heck, let's take a look!!  Wouldn't you know, over the last 3-4 weeks or so, I actullay gained some weight, and I am still dropping the fat pretty well!!  I weighed in at 212 lbs :o  SO that was ok.  Did abs, lower back and calfs today and the "wonderful quad workout" is tomorrow!!  So, I hope that I will be in walking shape for Sturgy's on Sunday!!  The were still sore up to yesterday after the last one!!!  Damn you Rick!! ;D ;D

I've all but given up on working out. It appears I don't know how to do it properly to get the results I want.

Reading through some of this helps.

At 5'9" and 135lb I don't need to lose weight, but at 32 I'm not happy with the rate my metabolism has dropped. It is getting harder for me to maintain my current weight. I have an eating issue.. I don't do it very well LOL. I eat pretty much what I want to eat. Not all of it is bad but is obviously lacking something when I seem to crave carbs at night. I'm active all year round with volleyball, softball, hiking etc.

I want to see muscle definition and build core strength. I've noticed through ball practice that I need to work on my shoulders (I can feel the weakness in my swing). I have a tredmill and resistance bands and weights to 10lbs but can't seem to find that magic formula that creates muscle changes instead of just dropping pant sizes. The current areas of concern are typical for a woman gluts, thighs and abs but I really need to develop upper body strength. I know I have the ability to hit a home run, I just don't have the strength.

Anyone got any suggestions?

well at 5'9'' and 135 lbs you are definately not over weight... from what I hear you seem like you are very athletic.. honestly I think you would benefit alot from a better eating plan.. if you up your protein levels.. maybe add some Glutamine to your diet and try and eat 6-7 smaller meals a day I am sure you would notice your energy and strength levels rise.... when you eat numerous smaller meals threoughout the day it causes your bodies metabolic rate to rise.. you will notice that you are hungry all the time and your body temperature will also be higher...
as for your cravings at night....unfortunately that is the hard part.. you have to force yourself to eat veggies instead of popcorn and chips hahaha.. getting a good fat burner with an appetite suppressant is also a good idea...
hopefully this will help you a bit..

Oh.. veggies are for rabbits...lol I know I try very hard to remember to grab a handful of carrots instead of popcorn.

I used to use Hydroxicut before they took out the ephedra and find that it doesn't work as well for me. What fatburner is good these days?

OK so I did legs this afternoon, and let me tell ya!!!  I took the girlfriend to the gym, and when she saw what weight I was doing on leg press, she started going off about me having a heart attack because I was working myself to hard!!! ::) ::)  She wouldn't let up and did not understand that I was not doing to much weight and that I have slowly built up to it!!!  Told her that I wasn't doing much weight compared to some, but she still went on, so to apease her, I wound up dropping a couple hundred pounds and doing slower reps to finish with the legs!!!  A total distraction, and it will not be happening again!!  At least not on leg day!!!  She also said that I was getting to big, and that I was becoming a guy with no neck!! ::)  What is a guy to do!!!  Now the girl friend thinks that I am big enough and she wants me to cut down and not work so hard!!!  So I will just keep doing my workouts and hope that she doesn't notice much!!! ;D ;D  I am not even that big!!  But she comes from a family of skinny people, so.....  Any advice on how to handle this!!  Good advice!!  I am not going to do anything drastict.  She is an awesome girl, just need to help to get her to see the light!!! ;)

I have a couple that would work for you, but I would have to show you!!  You might want to try a behind the back barbell finger roll!!  But it all depends on how much movement you have in your wrist!!  :-\ When are you making back home here??  I could show you some exercises where you don't have to bend your wrist!! ;)

Yeah keep doing them!!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

but seriously, do roll ups holding the barbell with the tips of your fingers roll the weight up the palm of your hand by rolling your fingers.. you can do the same exercise using the cables... there are many exercises.. but it would be much easier to show you than tell you

I leave for Mexico on May 27th. I am at 193lbs right now and pretty lean. A buddy of mine who is in competition said I should do a show in 4 weeks but I dont really want to. I am going to do a show in April that is in Kamloops. He told me that my weak points are chest, shoulders and quads. Just need to add a bit mroe size to those areas and I should do well.

Rick can you give me that info about your show in August at the River Rock? My buddy was asking me about it since I mentioned that their was one at that location.

Well Ricky, yes I am still training, HARD!!!   ;)  This heat this week is killing me though!!  I have lost 7 lbs in the last 2 weeks, which I don't mind at all as long as I don't start losing muscle mass!!  I am in 211 lbs right now, feeling good and strong!!  Just finished Bi's and Calfs!!  Tomorrow is chest!!  :) I'll get to see if I can still do the 105 lbs incline dumbells after putting up with 57 degree celius at work all day!!  Freakin 20 foot wide oven!! ::) ;D
Looking forward to supper, meat and potatoes!!  Only way to go!! ;) :D

hey man, they actually changed the location to North Vancouver now, which is good for me because I live less than ten minutes away  ;D
it is at the centeniall theater on 23rd and Lonsdale.. 193 is still a respectable weight, thats awesome you have maintained that much muscle after dieting for so long!! you should do a show soon, but take your friends advise and work on those weak spots before you get on stage, you will have a more enjoyable experience if you are confidant with how you look before you get up on the stage, I wish I had trained for one more year before I got up there, but live and learn,
So Eddie how is your training lately? still intense?

I have to say that I've been slacking off quiet a bit latley. In fact, I went to the gym for the first time yesterday after being away for about 3 weeks. :-[ Although I do have a pretty good excuse, crazy final exams and a two week fishing trip.  ;D After the weigh in yesterday I was back down to 180 so I've got my work cut out for me if I'm going to be able to make it to 200 by summers end. Not that I'm not up for the challenge.  :)

Ya I am supersetting everything right now. Just going to go to Mexico lean and give myself 5lbs to play with while down there  ;D

I am doing a Push Day, Pull Day and a Leg Day right now. It just gives my muscles two days of training a week so burn the fat. When I get back I will try and do a bit less cardio and try and add a bit of size to my weak areas. If I feel confident enough after givener hard and seeing some mass gains I might consider doing a competition earlier. The big thing for me is the calorie intake. I will have to do a clean bulk not a big jump in calories but just enough to get a bit more size.

You are big enough now. Time to start cutting and getting lean. Start depleating some calories from your everday totals and do more cardio.

I decided that I am going to bulk come late September. I was going to start now but after seriously thinking about it whats the point since we have 2 months of summer left.
Title: Re: Bodybuilding Thread!!
Post by: Big Steel on June 23, 2006, 04:57:39 PM
I was thinking about that!!  But, by the time I did get cut up, summer would be over!!  It would take me about 2 months to do this, so, new plan!!  Increase calories and carbs, my protien intake is ok where it is at, and bulk up to let's say around 245 or so, and get cut up for next summer!!  Hopefully get down to about 8-10 % body fat at 215-225lbs!!  So we'll see how it will works, I figured a can do a good full year of building, then cut down and see what I am left with!!  :P Did legs today, so I should be in great shape fopr sunday!!  Thank god I'll be sitting around for most of the day!!! ;D

I figured that I would keep this going with a little update, and see how everyone is still doing!!  You guys still training?
For me, I have still been hard at it, but have run into some injuries the last month or so. ???  First, I had a ligament go in my left forearm, could still do biceps, just not the exercises I wanted to do.  No forearms either!!  But worked through it, and it is feeling a bit better.  Still a bit sore during the workout today, but nothing to severe.
The big problem came yesterday!!  I did what I thought was a good leg workout.  They had been felling pretty good lately and showing some gains, so over the last 3 leg days, I had bumped it up a notch or 2!!  Well, a couple hrs after the leg workout, I decided to go for a bit of a walk.  The walk was fine, but when I trtied to climb the stairs, I found that I could put no weight at all on my left knee.  I was really killin me.  :-[ So I made it back upstairs, iced it and figured I would hope for the best today.  Well, this morning, got up for work, tried to stretch it out so I could go to work.  But to no avail.  The knee is hooped. :(  At least for a bit.  I got a nice knee wrap, iced it again, and gave it a bit of a massage.  We'll see how it goes for tomorrow.  I can't miss another day of work.  We are really busy right now.

Still going at it but been slaggin as far as my diet is concerned. Every second day I am cheating and noticing it. Not like I cant lose it in a matter of a week or two but its just that when its summer and you go out all the time you dont have as much time to prepare meals, especially with 3 kids.

You know I am!! ;D  One of my guys quit at work on tuesday, so it has and will be tough for a bit.  I missed the gym the last couple.  But I am hoping that tomorrow will go smooth and I won't have to work 3 hrs overtime.  Staurday morning for sure, then Sunday as well I will be at the gym.  Not sure about Mon, Tues. Weds as I will be fishing!! ;D ;D  But heck, if I am done as fast as I was on the river last week, I should be able to make it then as well.  So I am just in the proces of climbing over a little road block right now, but will be back up to speed quick!! ;D ;D

Rick, you are starting to look really insane these last couple weeks, and I think that you will do very well at your show.  Good luck man, we will all be cheering you on!! ;) ;D

Although i havn't really posted on this thread, i have been following it, and enjoy reading it.  I have been training pretty good in the off season so far and have got my weight down to about 223 or so from 238 :-X.  I have been traing about 5 times a week and i am at the last stretch before i have to leave for school. My focus this summer is more on quickness and agility rather then strength and size as i am big enough for college hockey.  I am dumbell pressing 100lbs for 8 reps and can deadlift over 400 lbs.  Fitness testing is going to include max squat and max bench.  I am not sure why they would do this as it doesn't really apply to hockey too much and I can see a greater risk of injury for someone trying to squat say 500 pounds or so.  I rarely do squats in my workouts but when i do i stop at three plates a side as there really isn't a need to go heavier. Anyway, lets keep trying to keep this thread alive. Peace

Hey Roeman how tall are you???  I would have never guessed you were carrying that kind of weight around!! I have to say I am impressed !! you definately have an athletic build .. perfect for hockey !! that does seem a little strange going for maximum Squat weight !!  that is where alot of injuries take place, I would like to know their thinking behind that one   ::)  maybe one of these days before you leave we can meet up on the river.. good luck with your training.. and Dave keep doing what you are doing cause it is werkin... just don't get into the habit of missing the gym because we all know how easy it is to not go :)

Thickrick, I am 6'3''.  I think i get my strength from my moms side as her dad and grandpa were very strong working at the mines in northern ontario.  My dad is pretty slim.  I am not sure of there thinking behind the squat.  I guess, they just want an idea of our leg strength  ??? I was talking to one of the players and he wasn't too sure either.  He said some guys went full out the first year but refused to go to max the next year as their back would just kill them the next week. Anyway, hopefully sometime we can meet up on the river although i don't have to many fishing days left.   :(

I have put on 10lbs in just under 3 weeks. Been training for size and its working great. Getting very strong now as well. I was 195lbs 3 weeks ago and am now 205lbs. I am also 6'3.

I am doing 110lbs on my incline DB Press. Doing 3 plates and a 25 a side on my squat. 8 plates a side for my leg press. Curling 70lb dumbells, Doing a plate a side on upright rows, Doing a plate a side on skull crushers with the EZ Curl bar, Doing a plate and a 25 a side on my CGBP, and doing 5 plates on the T-Bar row. Those are my greatest strength gains so far. Lost most of my six pack though since I have increased my calorie intake quite a bit. I knew I had to sacrifice my leaness to get some size but I will cut it up once I get around 220lbs. Feels good to be strong again  ;D

Roe man, what are the cardio requirments. I've heard in the dub you are expected to be able to run 5:00 miles.  :o

We get timed for one 400 meter sprint and for how long it takes you to run four laps with 3 min break between each lap.

It is at the Centennial Theater on the North Shore.  It is open to the public, tickets are $41 for the evening show! :)

Also since all this talk of Bodybuilding has inspired me a bit, I thought that I would post a quick Progress pic from last night as well.  No one to take the pic, so I utilized a handy mirror!! :-[ ;D ;D

Hey guys... the competition was very strong this time around.. I guess you have to expect that when you are at the best in BC level... I took home fourth in the heavyweight division.. I honestly thought that I was going to take first or second.. but it was very close and the top four were all separated by a small margin.. for me it was the best I have ever looked so it was a big accomplishment for me .. so now I will continue to train but take a couple of years away from competition... when I come back in two years I will be a lot bigger and hopefully put up some better competition lol.. I will post some pics as soon as I get my hands on some. thanks again for all the support fro the people on this site..
cheers Rick

OK so I figured that maybe it was about time that we post up some new workouts.  Perhaps ones that we are doing now.  This could be a great help to some viewing this thread!!
So I will start with the Arm workout.  This one has helped me get my stubborn arms going again.  I think that I may stick around this type off routine for a bit now, and just change up the exercises! ;)
  It goes like this.
Barbell Curls.  2 light warm-up sets.  Just the bar. (Olympic bar).  Then add weight so you get 7 -8 reps first set.  5-6 reps second set, 3-4 reps 3rd set, and 2-3 reps 4th set.
Then on to triceps, Cable tricep extensions.  2 light warm-up sets.  Then 4 sets with increasing weight and descending reps following the same rep count as the Barbell curls.
When completed, right back to Biceps with one arm preacher dumbell curls.  Again increasing weight, descending reps.
Next, right back to triceps with Skull crushers.  Same deal with them, increasing weight decreasing reps.
You see a pattern?  You guessed it, back to Biceps.  I finish biceps with seated alternate dumbell curls.  But with this I don't totally follow the increasing weight decreasing reps.  I want to get a weight where I can do 6-8 reps for each of 4 sets. This may mean dropping weight at this point as the Bi's are almost done at this point.
Then I finish tri's with single arm overhead dumbell extensions, again, wanting to get at least 6-8 reps per set.
This arm workout has worked very well for for me over the last 6 weeks or so.  I hope that it may help out anyone that wants to give it a try.
One other thing, don't spend anytime in between going from Bi's to tri's.  When finished one exercise, get right on to the next one.  The workout should take around 35-45 mins.  Good luck guys.  Now lets get a couple more up there, I know Rick and Eddie have some great workouts.  Feel free to post up what you have. ;) :)

What are Skull Crushers ?
Title: Re: Bodybuilding Thread!!
Post by: bbronswyk2000 on August 22, 2006, 10:26:40 PM
What are Skull Crushers ?

Using an EZ-Curl bar you lay on a flat bench. You extend the bar above the head and lower it down just behind your head and back up. I like to burn it out at the end with some CGBP. Also I must say it is one of my stronger exercises. I can do a 45lb plate on each side as well as adding maybe 10-15lbs more a side. This is not an easy exercise either.

Here is my current routine

Day 1: Chest + Shoulders + Triceps

Exercise            Sets         Reps
Incline Dumbbell Press           4         4,8.12,12+
Smith Machine Flat Bench Press   4         4,8,12,16+
Cable Crossover         3         10,10,12^
Seated Overhead Dumbbell Press**   3         12,12,12
Alternate Front Dumbbell Raises**   3         12,12,12
Dumbbell Lateral Raises**      3         12,12,12
Reverse Pec Deck Flye         3         10,10,12^
Triceps Dip             4         8,8,10,12^
Machine Overhead Extension      3         10,10,12^

Day 2: Back + Biceps

Exercise            Sets         Reps
Front Pulldown            4         8,8,10,12^
T-Bar Row            3         8,8,10^
Reverse Grip Bentover Barbell Row   3         10,10,12^
Close Grip Seated Cable Row      3         10,10,12^
Alternating Dumbbell Curl      3         8,8,10^
Machine Preacher Curl         3         10,10,12^
Standing EZ Curl 21’s         2         21,21

Day 4: Chest + Shoulders + Triceps

Exercise            Sets         Reps
Decline Barbell Press         4         4,8,12,16+
Flat Bench Dumbbell Press      4         4,8,10,12+
Smith Machine Incline Press      4         4,8,10,12+
Flat Bench Dumbbell Flye      3         10,10,12^
Bent Over Dumbbell Lateral Raise   3         10,10,12^
Front Cable Raise         3         10,10,12^
Machine Lateral raise         3         10,10,12^
Lying Triceps Extension         3         8,8,10^
Overhead Rope Extension^^      3         10,10,12^
Rope Pressdown         3         10,10,12^

Day 5: Legs + Biceps

Exercise            Sets         Reps
Leg Press            4         8,8,10,12^
Hack Squat            3         10,10,12^
Alternating Lunge         3         10 each side
Leg Extension            3         12,12,15^
Lying Leg Curl            3         8,8,10^
Standing Calf Raise         4         12,12,12,12
Standing Cable Curl         4         8,8,10,12^
One Arm Dumbbell Preacher Curl   3         8,8,10^
Two Arm High Cable Curl      3         10,10,12^
^Drop weight slightly on last set and rep to failure ^^ Do these as superset *** Do as tri superset with same dumbbells + Choose heavy weight with which you can barely get 4 reps than reduce each set, rest 2 mins after first set than down 40secs thereafter

I will make another post with my cardio plan and another following with my meal plan

Chest workout! ;D  I know I am a bit late.

Inline Dumbell presses
This is what I start with I do 2 warmup sets then pick a weight that I can do 5 more sets with and that will allow me to do 8 or so reps per set.
Next up is the Hammerstrength machines, I go to the Wide Grip Press first.  One set of 15 reps. You should be hurting a bit on the 15th rep.  Then 5 more sets with again a weight that will allow you 8 or so reps.  Not wimping out here, you should hardly be able to squeeze out that 8th rep. Don't break form either.
Next up is the deline machine, again 1 warmup sets with 15 reps, then same deal as the first 2 exercises.  except, this time you are only doing 4 sets.
To finsih, I go to a close grip bench.  I use the hammer strength press for this, and I do 2 sets to target the upper chest and 2 sets to target the mid/lower chest.  So just adjust the seat to the correct heights for yourself.  The handles should be at about your shoulders for the upper and mid-lower for the finishing 2 sets.  I use this exercise as full on burner sets, I use a fairly light weight, and do real slow controlled reps until I just can't do anymore on each set.
I hope tis helps out someone who wants to try something new.
Keep in mind, I only do one main muscle group a day.  So I try to totally destroy that muscle group.  You shouldn't even be able to really flex the muscle when you are done.
My weekly routine at the moment is this.
Day 1:  Chest and Calfs
Day 2:  Back and abs
Day 3:  Shoulders and Hammies
Day 4:  Off
Day 5:  Quads
Day 6:  Arms and abs
Day 7:  Repeat cycle.
I know it is only one day off, but the workouts aren't that long at all, I am usually done in about an hr max. :o  But then again, I hardly take any time off in between sets. ;D
So there it is.  I will post up the Leg, Shoulder, Back workouts over the next litt ;)le while.

How many repetitions is considered as a set ?
Title: Re: Bodybuilding Thread!!
Post by: bbronswyk2000 on September 06, 2006, 09:49:15 PM
How many repetitions is considered as a set ?

Reps are the amount of times you do the specific movement. Sets are how many times you do that specic exercise. For example bench Press

Set 1: 4 reps
Set 2: 8 reps
Set 3: 10 reps
Set 4: 12 reps

That should explain it.

yeah thats exactly what it means.. usually a good quality blend is in the 80's and a really good quality isolate is in the 80's to lower 90's and they are 100% whey...  whey is the most easily absorbed protein.... and the stuff that has soy protein is bad for males.. because it raises the estrogen levels in the system and causes muscle atrophy
Where on the label would it say the % of protein??
thanks

Time to bump this back up to the top.

Its a new year and its time to change. Myself I plan on packing on about 20lbs of lean muscle. Just picked up some protein, something to boost my testosterone and some multi's. Going to up my calorie intake to about 4000 a day and all of it clean. Also changed my workout routine. Going to be doing 5 sets, 5-8 reps and three exercises per muscle group. Also going to take about 1:30-2:00mins rest inbetween sets. Started my workout routine today. Cutting WAY back on the cardio as well to avoid losing muscle and a decline in testosterone.

So what are everyone else's goals for this year?

I am hitting it hard again tomorrow, after a lay-off dur to injuries and just plain fishing to much!! ;D ;D  My goals are to saty around the same size for now, and get my abs back!!  Want to cut bodyfat and shape the muscles a bit more.  So, I will be doing 5 days a week, with all isolation movements and lighter weight for everything.  Mind you that won't be all the time.  I will cycle it, with 4 weeks isolation and 1 week of full on power movements.  Well see where I am come May, then I might start to go for more power to get a bit bigger for summer. ;)  But first, I want the abs back, then change up a bit to try and keep the abs mostly thru summer while putting on some size!! ;D  Should be interesting anyways!!

Not to pick apart you're routine but if you are trying to pack on size then you need to change it up, the routine you have is great for strength gains but not for size, your reps should be between 8-12 per set with 4 sets max including warmup , and in order to hit the muscle groups properly and from every angle you need at least 4 if not 5 exercises per bodypart.

Thats my routine for just this week. I had previously been maintaining my leaness. I have to do a week of strength training before I go packing on the size. Cant just jump right into it after doing about 3 months of the same thing where I had been mostly supersetting and doing tons of cardio.

Next week I will be doing about 4 exercises per muscle group with a good 1min inbetween sets. I dont believe I need 4-5 exercises for calves though. I can hit ever angle on my calves from one exercise but I usually do 2-3 different exercises for them with the smith machine being my favorite for packing on size.

Thanks for your input.

Yeah you are right about calves , there are only so many exercises you can do for them :)
I started hitting my calves three days a week now as it is a lagging bodypart for me.

Its a body part thats hard to get size on for most people. I can stack 5 plates a side on the leg press and still get no real size to them. I was doing them today on the smith machine and had 3 plates a side. I cant belive how strong I am for the amount of time I was off from doing any strength exercises and mass builders. My DB Press is already up to 100lb db's a side, my front raises for shoulders I am raising 40lb db's with ease and can do about 4 reps a side with 50's of course their are other exercises I am impressed with but those are the two that I was amazed with.

Well all I have to say is I AM SORE!!!!!! My whole body aches after a full week of strength training. Did legs yesterday and this morning could barely walk down the stairs. Did manage to do 3 plates a side on the Squat though for 8 reps which I am happy about.

I am with ya on that one man!!  I am a bit sore after my first week back as well!!  I'll do core this wekend, but other than that I am not doing anything. ;D  Cardio whise, I feel good after three straight days on the bike, and will pump it up to 45 min a day next week. :'( ;D  Also have been eating properly this last week, and man, that makes a huge difference in energy and mood!!   ;)
