Title: Very late report and picture for Feb 22
Post by: gofish on February 23, 2006, 02:52:55 AM
Hit the Vedder at first light this morning with a long-time FWR lurker/ non poster ( you know who you are Beek!  ;) ) in the mid river area with the other few THOUSAND anglers . ( don't you all have day jobs???? ) Started near the crossing which should have been named the Scale Bar this morning- anglers both sides every 10 ft for that whole run below the bridge!!! We worked down away from the masses and I lucked into this nice little wild doe-

My lurker had 1 take down in the same stretch but only came up with a bait stripped hook so we moved way up into friendly upper river country. I was anxious to see him into a fish as he has never hooked/landed a steelie yet so we pounded alot of water. Finally with 1/2 hour left in our day he connects with an absolute beauty wild hen and plays it to shore for me to tail. We switch spots so I can snap a pic of this most perfect first steelhead with the lucky angler and....sploosh- the fish squirmed and my buddy didn't- gone out of his hands- we both just stood there for a few seconds in silent disbelief before I informed him the definition of "dumbass" at length. Still a great day, but, wow, there sure are alot of guys on the river, we are having to walk further and further for some solitude out there every day!  :(

FYI guys, just got in from the river. Completley miserable day to be out on the river. Wind was blowing and it was pissing rain all morning. Only saw 3 fish hooked all morning and those were by an angler with a suspiciously long leader. Chirs and Nick hadn't even touched a fish by the time I left.  :-\

I have to say that it was pretty crappy out there today. I hooked my first steelhead ever on the Vedder this morning at about 8:00am, but lost it as I gently tried to bring it close enough to ID as wild or hatch, as I was fishing alone. As I didn't see any other action, I moved upriver to the beaver dam, where it was unfishable due to the howling wind. By that time I was soaked, and the sleet in my face wasn't helping! I figured that I would go back downriver for one more try before I went home. Fished across from Lickman, 3 casts, 10# hatch doe,my first landed steelhead on the Vedder! More than made up for the weather, and especially nice given the fishing seemed slower today. Did see an 18#er weighed in at Freds, but not part of the derby. It was hooked at Peach rd, as was my first fish today.

Yes there is a reason. Today and about a week ago the wind was caused by an arctic outflow. This occurs when a cold arctic air mass moves south and displaces the less dense warm air resulting in heavy winds. The winds about two weeks ago were caused by a pacific storm. These are normal weather events for this time of the year although this year they occurred all within a two week time frame.
