Title: Indian Arm Fishing
Post by: FilletSniffr on February 09, 2006, 04:05:06 PM
New to the area. Does anyone Know if there are any winter spring feeders in the arm? And what would one use to attract these fish? Or Could anyone specify where would be the best place to fish and launch areas?

Why would there be springs up the arm? I though that with the exception of the pink run for the Indian River the arm was pretty much barren of salmon.

I'd love to be wrong though!

Nikko i was talking about winter springs. These fish are not returning to any rivers yet. Winter springs are actively feeding and aslong as their is food around like herring they will be their too. I wonder if anyone catches herring in the arm. I know the last time i was at cates park ppl were using herring jigs of the dock. I didn't see them catch anything though.

Interesting. I wonder if it's worth while to pop the boat in and see if there's anything there?

Well if there is the odd herring their I am sure their is the odd spring around. I probably would go somewhere else to target them like bowen island, however if your in the arm waiting for your crab traps to fill why not drop a line. You never know.

Maybe it was a winter spring. I remember one night while we were anchored in Caaamano sound we couldn't sleep because all night the springs were boiling the herring to the surface and splashing everywhere. Kinda pissed us off though because we wanted to sleep after catching our limit of halibut and coho.

I think the crabbing is pretty good in the arm and same with the prawning. Yeah you never know what could be there feeding- Could be a spring.  I think it is worth a shot while waiting for your traps.

That'll be my next stop!

Thanks for that. I'll let you know how it works out. The boat's still tucked away for the winter, but after this weekend and last, I'm almost ready to pull it out early. 'Specially if there's prawns, crab and a winter spring to be had!

There has been some talk of the odd spring up there. Lived on the arm for 3 years and never heard of one caught then. The Indian river could use some help though. Loggers left one of the worst mess's up there. Time only helps to cover all the garbage around. The river looks like it use to produce big time, unfortunately that's not the case now. Looked like the loggers drove the fish out till the next ice age.

Decades ago or not, there was also some net pen fish rearing done up the arm, many of the small creeks have runs of coho, small though they may be, we used to boat upto the estuary of the river and ride 10 speeds up the river, in off pink years the coho fishing was unreal, we also used to see the odd spring carcass.
