My first trip to the thompson was with winter steel. We simply loaded up the car an drove! The thompson is very easy to see as you drive along side it. WS and I simply took our time spotting runs from the road and fishing them.
We fished the confluence of the fraser, a run below a white water rafting company (Kumsheen I think), Gold Pan, the Graveyard and a few others.
That was a 2 day trip and we hooked 4 or 5 steelhead as I recall (it was a long time ago).
Go explore, have some fun, and good luck.

There is a book out by Art Lindgren called , River Journal ,Thompson River. I found it very helpful with getting to know my way around the Thompson.
Hope this helps and good luck on your trip
