Maybe someone knows whats up with my reel. I'm VERY experienced with calcutta's, I have a 251 thats the lefty model, and I just bought a 201B. It gives me some problems when I'm driftfishing, But if I try casting a spoon or a spinner I get wicked birds nests. This is totally new to me as I have'nt had this problem ever since I started useing level wind reels ages ago. Nothing I do to the reel stops it, except cinching down the cast control knob to the point where the reel won't free spool. I put 15lb mainline on and I usually use 12lb, does anyone think this could be the problem? Is that to heavy for this small reel?
-
15lb should be fine. i think shimanos quality is deteriorating, allong with their customer service.

Adjust your Cast Control Knob. It's that small knob next to your handle. When you hit the release button your spoon or spinner should fall to the ground without overflowing.
-
FA, too easy , I know that stuff. Its something else.
-
a friend of mine also had the same problem he started to tighten his brake down but that would cause his casting distance to go down as well as shimano has it advertised it could run 8# line on it.about to try another thing buy changing the bearings to faster ones so when the brake is adjusted tight you can still cast almost as far.

You might want to check the counter balancing weights under the cover on the reel. Look in the manual for intructions on how to adjust these. It is not that difficult, I had to do it to mine!!!!!
-
maybe the reel doesn't suit the rod. what's the spec on the rod? how heavy is your lure?
-
How big are the spinners / spoons you're trying to cast ? I find that with lighter weights it's easier to cast with a lobbing motion rather than "firing" it out with a zzinger.

yes i just thought of that. that could very well be your problem. if you are an experienced caster then all the centrifugal brakes should be off.
-
I'll adjust the brakes, thats one thing I have'nt tried. Thanks.
-
If it still doesn't work I'll be glad to take it off your hands ;D
-
Stick bubble gum in the gears, that'll slow it down a little ;)
-
A easy solution to your problems, buy a centre pin reel, no gears to worry about again, all you have to do is to learn how to cast it. ;D
Once you use one you will never want to use any other type.

Thats Funny Chris, Winter steel said the same thing and I told him that everytime we're out he says " I should have brought my level wind" LOL. On a side note, you do that trip every year to the Thompson for jacks, but you never mention going out on the Vedder for them..have you been out?

Just a follow up on my calcutta 201 problem. No problem anymore, it was the brakes needing to be set in the on position. They were all off. The new calcutta's have a side plate open feature that lets you adjust the brakes without taking apart any of the reel. Cool. BP
-
BP: what have you notice that is different between the old and new models? Is the new better and if it is, why? Or the reverse? Thank.
-
Norm, My old reel is a 251. The new one is a 200B, it replaces the 250/251 this year. The new calcutta has a 6:1 gear ratio, while the old one has only a 5:1 ratio. This means a Quicker retrieve. The new one has three stainless steel ball bearings instead of two, and a stainless steel roller bearing. Also all bearings are now anti-rust protected. Plus the Quick release of the brake cover.
