Have you tried the entrance into Deep Cove?

how far down did you go for prawns ? I was told you have to be 300' or beyond

For large prawns you do need to go DEEP. But if spotted prawns (those smaller ones on the market now) 150' would start to produce.

Nope, I've not tried off the entrance to Deep Cove. I set around the back side of Racoon island for 24 hours (300' of water) and I set on the north shore just east of Best point (280') for about a 1/2 day...nuthin.

Although...I'm not convinced the first set was an actual skunk. There was a boat near my trap when I headed over to retrieve it and he scampered away pretty fast as I got closer. I can't help wonder if he lifted my trap.

Sounds like I should try the entrance to the cove huh? It's shallower there so I assume this means spotted prawns? I've also been told I should set at a fresh water outfall (creek/spring entrance). Haven't tried that yet but I plan on it.

I know that we kept the traps down a full 24 hours in the Powell River region (at 300' depth) and this is on the advice of some very good commercial prawners. And it works! I asusmed I should do the same thing in the arm, but maybe I don't have to leave the traps down that long. Thoughs/advice appreciated.

It really depends. Back in June all I need to do is left the trap down for 2 hours and I'm happy. Usually I'll check the trap after fishing (2~3hrs) before I leave and if it's still empty I'll change place. If there's catch I'll leave 2 in the pot and take the rest then put the pot back where it was.

Wow...I'm sure doing something wrong then. good to know they're there though. Guess I'll keep trying locations/depths :)

One thing you might consider put your prawn trap down slop of those crab traps. You'll likely get some small prawns, but hey it's a start  ;)

Down at powell river this summer we would leave a trap overnight check it at like 9 in the morning and repeat this process when we wanted prawns..They where huge and had no problems of ppl stealing traps..(touch wood).!
(i have some pics dont know how to post)
