Title: Vedder, September 21st
Post by: Trout Slayer on September 21, 2005, 10:37:06 PM
Didn't get out of the house till around 11 today. Yes I know, targetting coho, it is not the best time to start fishing. First light or evening being ideal. I was very spectacle on how today could be, clear and sunny with the water low and clear, didn't know what my chances would be like. ;D

Got to the area I planned to fish, not a soul around and no fish either. Started off with boraxed pink roe and first cast was into some light taps as my float bounced a couple times. Was using a new reel today, first time out with a centerpin, borrowing Rodney's Islander for the season........too bad I'm hooked using it now. ;)

An hour went by with no solid hookups, only saw a big spring jump but kept confident. Moved upriver and found another virgin run. Within 5 casts I was into a big Chinook. As much as I hate them it gave me a good fight and broke in the pin. Was released after pic. (Pic below)

Tried a little while more and hooked up with a very chrome small coho or jack spring, came off.

Decided to rig up the fly rod and gave 'er for about 45 minutes, finally hooked up a jack spring and fight was on. Put up a good scrap and was brought to hand.

Went back to the centerpin and tried a colorado blade, nothing then went back to using roe. I'm glad I did. :D
Float bounced twice on a drift, I lifted my rod tip and fish on, this take felt very different then any other in the day. Soon the fish is circling around and kicking at the surface. 5 Minute battle and my first Coho of the season is brought to hand. A hatchery female of about 5lbs. ;D ;D ;D

Fished a little bit more and hooked a couple more coho as well as landed 2 more jack springs which I released. Great day on the water.  8)

Well i always get up at 3am on the weekends.  Just in case there are suddenly a ton of people on the run, I like to get my spot.  Besides, I love sittin beside the river in the pitch black just listing to river.  Gets me in tune with it for that day.  YA YA I know that sounds weird, but really.  It is so peaceful!!!! ;) ;)

Yah i agree. i've done that a few times on my local river. Rarely see anyone there. Its sweet, hearing fish before youy can see them.

Slightly off topic, but are centerpins a little more durable than the average reel? A couple picks show it sitting in the sand. I thought that would be bad for it. I know they don't have gears but wouldn't it get all gummed up with dirt? Nice picks anyhow sounds like a good day was had.

I don't recommend putting the reels in either on the beach or in the water but that's me.

Try 10km upriver. Like I said, virgin water, which is untouched.

I agree about the reels and sand, I try to avoid it but fishing alone I just set it there carefully for a pic.

Thanks Trout Slayer, I thought they may have been indestructible or something. Didn't mean to stir up controversy with regards to you fishing the canal. I could care less where anyone fishes as long as 'they' believe the fish 'took' their presentation rather than the Fraser way. I enjoy going for a walk on the Mid-Upper river for the fresh air and enjoyment of the scenery. If I see any fish it's just an added bonus to a day off the couch watching the tube.

Can you unthaw and refreeze cured roe?

Yup I do it all the time.

generally not a good idea, it often turns to mush when refrozen. however, fresh frozen roe, uncured can be thawed, procured then boraxed and refrozen. plain borax roe does not turn out so good after freezing fresh and then curing. whenever possible, douse,  fresh out of the fish,  roe in cold clean water or lightly salted water (coarse salt not table salt) 1/4 cup salt to 1 litre water mixed well. this helps remove the blood from the roe, very important for a quality cured product.
I cut my roe into chunks and allow extra juices to drain out for an hour or so in the fridge on a old small window screen. I then toss it in fresh borax till it is liberally dressed in borax. spacing the chunks out on the screen to air cure for about 2 to 4 hours. I then shake the extra borax gently from each piece and repeat the borax process again with a batch of fresh borax. I then use the plastic peanut butter jars, bleached clean, and layer the chunks with liberal amounts of borax between and completely covering the roe at the top. leaving a 1/4 inch of space at the top, i place a small 1 inch square of tin foil at the center of the borax on top and just as i close the lid i throw a lit match on the foil and screw the lid tight. this burns off the oxygen and helps to preserve the quality of the roe for frozen storage for 8 months to a year in a deep freeze. generally one regular size peanut butter jar (1 litre?) will hold about a 1/2 to a pound of cured roe, enough for a day on the water. Once thawed it can be refrigerated and remain useable for 10 days or so.
i use the exact same method for procuring roe ( all my previously frozen fresh roe gets procured) except that i skip the draining steps after cutting the chunks. I get the blood out before i freeze it fresh so all i have to do is thaw the roe, cut it into useable size chunks into a gallon ice cream pail and then follow the procure directions on the jar. i procure for 2 to 4 hours then drain for 6 to 8 hours in the fridge. then i follow the borax steps above. this can be refrozen after curing following the steps above.

as for refreezing roe repeatedly, i wouldn't recomend it.

I'm with Alwaysfishin. I don't refreeze my eggs once they're thawed.

Usually a couple of weeks, if you keep your fridge nice and cold and change the borax when it starts looking orange!!!

Freezing your roe after being unthawed is definetaly not good as others have stated. I never have enough roe so I could save some when the days done anyway!!!! ;D

i've tried refreezing cured roe. the quality deteriorates, especially after a full day of fishing. better off starting from scratch, and not compromise the quality of your bait.

Great pictures, especially the coho.  I think you have bragging rights for the first picture this year on this site of a coho.
