Actually its line weight and the strength. For the fly reels the 7/8 can carry 7wt or 8wt line and the 8/9 can carry 8wt or 9wt line. If you are fishing pinks anything from 6-8wt is nice depending on experience. If you are new to flyfishing or new to flyfishing for salmon I would start out with the 8wt for pinks. I use my 8wt for coho and chum. I use a 6wt for pinks. I also use the 8wt for steelhead. Hope this helps.

Plan to try fly fishing near Hope on Fraser for pinks. Should I be using float or sink line? What type of fly should I use?

Thank you

I'm no pro,,, but I've been using floating line with a fast sinking tip.  10 pound tippet.  Pink flys with some silver flashing mixed in.  Try some with the weight eyes as well.

Using a ghost tip is probably the best. Another alternative is an intermediate sink. If you only have a floating line than your only choice would be with a weighted fly. Catching salmon on the fly is an experience you will never forget. Soon you will have the coho and chum which is a whole new ball game.

Yeah, that should be good for pink, coho and chum.  My personal preference are 8wt for pink and 9wt for all other salmon.  I use a bit heavier on what other recomends.  This is because I do not want to over play the fish to exhaustion.  I want to be quick on landing the fish.  Because if I need to release them then I am releasing the fish which can continue to swim up the river.

A friend of mine has been using the Okuma Integerity 8/9 for guiding. He says they are very tough for the price!
