Something like that wouldn't happen here.. We don't have 'that type of people' who go around after a disaster, terrorising the city and looting, stealing, raping, and basically pillaging.

Were you not here after the Stanley cup loss?  ::)

Think again. Starve a few people and bake them under the sun with a few dead bodies around, see how they'll act after a few days.

BTW I was referring to the gangs going around and looting and pillaging the city, taking advantage of the disaster. We had a little riot in Vancouver where people broke windows in stores. That's quite a bit different than going around and robbing every single house you see, shooting people who defend themselves, raping girls, etc. There is no law enforcement right now, so the gangs are taking over the city.

Most of the people causing the problems stayed there with the intention of taking over the city. They had their chance. As soon as the storm subsided, every gun was stolen from all the Wal-Marts. Now tell me, is that desperation? Or taking advantage of an opportunity?

The people that stayed were not all planning to rob the town after the hurricane. Most were just innocent people that dont have cars and couldnt afford to evacuate :-\

Umm I'm not sure why you think I said they are ALL looting and pillaging.. Sure, there are plenty of people like that. Probably the vast majority. But there were enough people who obviously planned on taking this opportunity to spread anarchy. I agree those people are the most victimized, by these gangs.

It all comes down to complete lack of planning, and no support at all from their government though.

no one could plan for that .
and no other country could supply better faster relief efforts.
if a natural disaster of that magnitude hit canada we would be royally screwed

You are insane to think that. They had a WEEK to prepare, before it even hit! And it wasn't until a week AFTER it hit that any help arrived. Have you been paying attention to what's been going on?

Same attitude we have, could never happen here!  Why could't the coastal area have a disaster?  With the weather systems changing etc.  Few years ago a small tornado touched down in Kelwona ripping huge trees out of the ground! No one thought that that would happen either! Are we ready for a big natural disaster??? (or are you in the lower mainland).

Greater Vancouver geographic feature will not have tornado, hurricane, tidal wave.  The only geographic disasters that is possible to happen in Greater Vancouver are, hearthquake, heavy runoff + rain, may cause flood in lower parts. ie Ladner, Richmond. That's about it.

Im not saying we won't or can't have a disaster around here. I'm saying there won't likely be organized gangs going around looting every house and every street while the police have their hands tied.

That's very naive thinking. Are you forgetting that there was a riot after losing the Stanley Cup ?

Not just the riot.

Vancouver has the highest bank robbery, most number of robbery, and at par on harmicide with NY....
Who knows we just might get it worse than New Orleans.

Heaven forbids if a major quake hits us (which scientists have predicted will happen), and we lose modern conviences such as electricity, sewage, roads, clean water, and our houses torn and food depleted, what makes us feel so safe that the ugliness of human nature won't surface just like in New Orlean.  Anarchy can really turn normal people into animals sometimes, particularly when they are hungry animals.  I hope that quake will not happen for a long long time, not in our life time.  ;D

Hear ! Hear ! That's why experts tell us to keep a survival kit around the house sufficient enough to sustain the family for 3 days.

yes the americans had a week to prepare
they did not however know exactly where and how great the damage would be.
it also appeared that new orleans was spared until the levee burst
that probably slowed relief efforts

even america the richest country in the world is unable to handle that kind of emergency
with their coast guard  national guard and armed forces relief still took to long

lowlight do you really think canada is better prepared to handle this kind of disaster??
we have no coast guard to speak of
our armed forces are a joke
where would the help come from??

right probably the good ole us of a
and it will take them longer to get here.

That's my exact point. US is there for everyone, right away. When the tsunami hit thailand with no warning, they were there the next day with fn aircraft carriers! If it happened in Canada, they'd probably be there within hours.

But not for those poor people NO. Forget it.

They should have been mobilized right away. I saw an interview with the mayor of NO. He met with the president and GG 1 or 2 days after, and the president said "we're ready to go". The GG said "we need 24 hours to consider what to do". Wtf is that?

Don't even bother arguing with me if you have to resort to name calling.

Relax, the moderators have edited it. It may simply be a typo? If not, move on and stick to the topic.

Yes earthquake + ocean (long beach slope) then tsunami.  Vancouver tsunami ??? Never, not with Vancouver Island in the way.

But West coast Vancouver Island then be very careful.  That area has high possibility of tsunami occurance.
