Title: PINKS! August 30th
Post by: THE_ROE_SLINGER on August 30, 2005, 05:39:33 PM
Headed out at 2:30 with roe man for some pink action by the portmann bridge. On arrival many pinks were boiling close in and quickly hooked into 2 fish, but both came off after a 1 minute fight. Then realized the tip of the hook was pinched in >:( >:(Quickly switched hooks and fished for another hour or so with my luck. Couple fellows beside me landed 4 or so.

Title: Finally, first of the season!
Post by: Rodney on August 30, 2005, 07:30:11 PM
Despite the light rain, we ventured out again this afternoon for a few hours of pink salmon fishing. This fishery comes once every two years, so we will go out whenever there is an opportunity. ;) What a great way to spend the afternoon, spincasting with few of your closest friends, and hooking the odd fish to keep us entertained. :)

Fishersak phoned me just when I was sneaking out of my house at 1:30pm. It was a race to the spot. ;) I arrived first, but only to find Perch and his dad already fishing away. :o They had been there for over an hour, how sneaky. ;D Fishersak arrived few minutes after me, followed by Trout Slayer.

Once we settled down, it was fishing time. Perch had already hooked three fish before we arrived, an indication of better things to come. :) Soon after I started, I had several hits close to shore but managed to miss them all. ::) About 15 minutes after the first cast, the first fish was hooked just meters away from shore. This fish came up to the surface, rolled a few times, but didn't perform any runs. It looked exhausted, possibly an escapee of a gill net. :o I decided to retain it, as most likely it was not going to make it. A chrome doe around 6lb was on the beach, thanks to Trout Slayer's perfect net scoop. :)

I proceeded to hook three more, but only landed one of them. It was an energetic male that I released quickly.

Then everything died down. :o

Trout Slayer managed to land and release one around 3:30pm or so. From then until about 5:00pm, it was rather quiet. I almost thought about leaving, but a few small taps kept me around.

Then fishersak was into a fish! :o This fish took a few long runs, we were praying that it would not come off the line. ;) I walked over with my net, and scooped it up once fishersak guided to shore. It was a chrome looking male, which he decided to keep as this was his first of the season! ;D

Soon after, Bwi Bwi, LukyYVR, FishOn, badboi arrived to see the action, or the lack of action. ;) Just after Bwi Bwi picked up a couple of lures from me and left, I was into three fish in 15 minutes. :o There must have been a school going by. ;) I decided to keep one of them, the small female, which was bleeding quite a bit.

Chrome Mykiss later showed up with his dad, who managed to hook two in a row but lost them both. :-\

Overall, I feel that the fishing is still quite slow, the fish are coming in small schools and fairly scattered out. Water clarity is still fair so reducing the chance of a fish hitting your lure.

Day four, hooked 7, landed 5, kept 2. A satifying fishing day in BC indeed. :)

Few things to remember

We saw almost no risers today by the way. If there are no surface action, it doesn't mean there are no fish.

Dammit where is this spot? I was out for an hour today by myself. Weather was kind of miserable, and after snagging and losing a lure after absolutely no bites, I was done for the day.

Usually I see a sockeye jumping every minute or so.. This time, nothing. Weather slows them down?

Then you're missing out some good action. ;)

Today we had a couple of hours of no hookups, then we bumped into a few fish in a row. You just never know if there is a school of fish sneaking by you unless your lure is in the water. ;)

How far out can you cast from shore? Do you add weights? Or just that small 3/8" Croc?
Title: Re: PINKS! August 30th
Post by: Rodney on August 30, 2005, 08:44:17 PM
255 yards.....

;D

Not sure, 30, 40 meters maybe? Most fish have been hooked several meters from shore anyways, no need to cast far.

And the weight? I usually throw a couple split shots on there to get it out further, but maybe that is just causing me to drag along the bottom, below the pinks?

Fishin' from the boat, 30 yards off shore. Wife and two young kids. We drifted past derby reach about 7pm. 2 or 3 separate schools of pinks swam by us. We hooked 3 fish, lost them all! That was our first trip for pinks. Its gonna be fun :) :)

Fished dyke road today for a while, no fish for me, didnt see any landed either, had a couple on only to loose them at the shore. On a possitive note I did find some neat treasures, I found a small buddha statue, an orange crush pop bottle from the 1960's couple of golf balls, and three lures, one buzz bomb, a spoon and a hootchie, also picked up around 4 dollars in empty bottles and cans. If you are fishing dyke road and see a couple 5gal. pails at the top of the rocks, dont get too close, I saw them and went to investigate only to find them filled with fish guts blood and I noticed a few heads and gills, almost made me toss my cookies, cannot figure out why they are there?

Was another fabulous day spoon fishing for the devils. After I caught and released the fish it went slow like Rodney said but i changed up my spoon and right away had a good fish on. It snapped my 6lbs mainline and took my spoon. :'( Time to beef up the line. ;D Near the end I kid you not, Rodney hooked 3 fish in 15 minutes, I would cast and he would have a fish on so I would have to put my rod down and keep netting his fish. :o Nice cooler shot, taken Chris' ice blocks of old juice containers suggestion and made use eh. ;)

Yap goes the same with Chum.  After you freeze them the meat is like chewing threads (for chum that is).

Rod, you jus seem to get all of the best luck at the best places.

I know....  but, no one can't be this lucky.
I am not sucking up to the site owner  :-*, but he is actually very very good fisherman.

Near the day's end,  6~8 guys were fishing at the same place as Rod and he was the only one catching.

Just like Trout Slayer said, Rod hooked 3 fishes in 15 minutes!,
I believe 2 were hooked just the few casts a part..  :o

Fishersak and I  were quite perplexed as to why Rod was so successful.. ???
Fishersak thinks it's Rod's retrieving speed, but I am leaning toward  something supernatural...  Its almost scary.  :o

I am the pink whisperer. ;D

Don't ask me what it is, you guys are using the same lures as me. :P

Trev, pinks are excellent for eating when fresh. We grilled up a couple of pieces tonight, seasoned with salt, pepper, herbs. Wonderful! I generally keep the females because they are smaller, thinner, easier to fillet and cook, plus the roe makes excellent bait during October on the Vedder. ;)

lucky, that's gross. I've encountered containers like that around the same area and other parts of Richmond. >:( I'll fire out an email to see what's up with that.
