Haven't posted for a while but here goes...
The family was up at Harrisson this week, so after work Friday I headed up. Decided to hit the river for a few hours first :). Walked in across the railroad tracks to the river above the Aggasiz bridge. Walked past some BBers and chatted a bit with a DFO fish counter. Seems that a few had been caught (4 springs among 15 or so guys). Decided to wak on and try bar fishing at a spot I had to myself. After an hour or so the rod goes off and I landed a nice bright spring in the 15-20 pound range. Thats the good. On the way out someone reported seeing a large bear that made the walk out a bit tense with the fish, but I didn't see it.
After a day at Harrisson the wife says why don't you fish Sunday and try to get another one. Well she didn't have to tell me twice. So I went back to the same spot. When I arrived the trail across the tracks was blocked by some security person who said that a train had been broken into so nobody was permitted to cross the tracks. I was told it was a railway security giard, but later heard it was RCMP. He was taking names and addresses of every fishermen who walked out. Many fisherman waited around, some left. I managed to find "another trail ;)" a few hundred yards away. Apparnetly the office left several hours later. I seriously doubt a fisherman did anythign to that train. Thats the bad.
Well fishing was slow. I bar fished for while, then Bbounced with no luck though some where caught. When I walked out to the trail I found a big pile of sockeye carcasess. It was the heads and leftover from the fillets. Someone must have dumped it that afternoon as it was not there in the morning. Maybe a 100 fish or so. I started cleaningn up and filled my two garbage bags. Another guy had three more bags and we managed to clean it up. The other guy had a pickup and was willing to drop it off further down the road away from the trail.
What were they thinking dropping that messs there. Its not hard to guess who might have done this. I can imaging the chances of running into a bear late or early in the day. Very dangerous. >:( Thats the ugly part.
I thought I'd post a warning as these sort of things are scary - someone could get hurt. Be especially carefull on trails early or late on the day. If people are trying so hard to scare away fishermen that they resort to dumping fish carcasses on the trail, well you have to wonder...
-
where did these carcasses come from.... :o :o and why do they have hundreds.... all i can say is i hope they get there instant dose of Karma...
-
What a nasty thing to have to deal with on the trail. Admirable job cleaning everything up and dealing with it on behalf of everyone.

We were out there today(Seabird) at around 6:30 a.m. We had to climb a stopped train to cross to the other side. As we came down, we saw pop bottles, apple juice and cookies thrown all over the place. At first we thought that a fisherman had left their food behind but then we saw the door to one of the box cut opened.
Hope it doesn't effect us fishing in the area because of the breakins. It has to be someone local because they would have to know the train schedule and its probably a night time job too.
Well, fishing was actually pretty good as we hooked into 4 Springs and saw quite a few taken. Lots of sockeyes and picks hooked too.
On the way back, the rail Police stopped us asking questions and took our names.
-
Hmmm, who do you think has the fish-catching or killing power to get 100s of sockeyes at this moment of time. Quite a difficult riddle.
Well, if you know the answer, you are surely a genius. ;D
So, after the court case failed, they are calling on the wild kingdom to stop you hard-nosed fishermen from getting to your spot. Have anyone heard Tarzan's call to summon the animals there? ;D No, I guess not. They are using dead socs as a bait to summon the mighty bears as their 'bouncers', HAHA! Quite a dirty trick indeed. ;D ;D ;D

totally not cool at all....after reading this thread it makes me wonder if paying for your licenses gives you the right to fish or not. If the police is there they should do a little survelance 24/7 for a week... i have never fished the area but its upsetting that you have to put up with this..
-
I fish the area every summer and it seems that every year more happens especially the garbage being dumped as you first enter the trail. But that seems to have been dumped there before the area is even crossable. It didn't surprise me though to here that a train got broken into there. The tracks are not that visable from the road. But I am sure it was not fisherman at least I hope it was'nt. It is a nice place to fish and I hope this does not prevent us from accessing the river.

Hey im just wondering something. planning to go out tomorrow on the fraser for pinks or springs. BBing. will 12 lb test that i have on there be enough for springs?? or do u need 20+???
-
IMHO 12 lb. test is way too light on the Fraser for springs.
-
Don't use 12lb test, you'll lose all your betties plus you might run into a large spring.
I'd use 25lb at the bare minimum. I've seen people use up to 80lb braided so they can work out the snags. Higher test just gives you a better chance to save your weights but its a pain to break off.
gman, was the place you were fishing called Sweat Bar?

gman, was the place you were fishing called Sweat Bar?
I've never heard it called that name before, but it would be appropriate given how much I was sweating caryying out my two rods, bar fishing rod holder, packsack and spring. :)

65 lbs tuff line xp with 25 lbs maxima leader and a rod rated to 25 or 30 lbs is the best set up for BB'ing springs. This will allow you to not "overload" your rod casting 3 and 4 ounce weights.
I fish a Talon M2 11ft 2, best spring BB'ing rod on the planet IMHO
and a shimano calcutta 400 [or 400te or abu 7000 (bushing model) are the 3 best reels of choice]
trophy xl has some nice 11 and 12 ft fraser rods that are in the 150.00 or less price bracket.
um.... pinks are open 4 per day in the "tidal" fraser but I don't think they can be targetted in the fraser above mission bridge at least not for retention anyways....opportunities to be announced by dfo. my guess is that pinks will not open in the upper fraser this year either.

Nice immature post fish. ::) I guess you and others posting crap comments here don't realize you're accessing FN reserve land and they could close access to sporties there anytime they feel. But have done an admiral job allowing it to stay open. :o

Bantam, look at the smileys in his posts, maybe he's making a joke?
"you and others posting crap comments"? Thanks for generalizing our participation on this forum. Your positive contribution has certainly helped the growth of many anglers on this website lately.

Bantam, life must be pretty stressful. Rod has it right on. My post is just a joking response in reply to Gman's questioning of who dumped the 100s of socs and what they were thinking plus the mentioning of bears in the area. No ill intention there, buddy! Just try to throw a joke by tying these together. :D
You are right. The Seabird Band is a nice group and they seldom cause trouble. After fishing all these years, of course I know we are fishing on Seabird's land if we fish on Seabird Island. :) Hey it's mutual benefits. We ate out at their cafe, filled gas or bought drinks at the store. I think they like us & our $. ;D Perhaps the Cheam should open up their land for businesses so they don't have to sell that much fish for $$$. ;D
Instead, my joke was intended to direct to the Cheam in a humourous way. With the tense discussions on fishing closesures and injunctions, sometimes it helps to throw in a joke or two to relax a bit. But just like the late night shows, if you don't like the jokes on one, just switch channel. Just that simple. :) I will let the fishermen brotherhood decide who is posting 'crap' comments. Fair? ;D
By the way, I abandoned Seabird for a much better bar (3 springs in 4 trips). But I hope this incident does not lead to closure of the Seabird bar.
