Title: Fishing line
Post by: No_way on July 11, 2005, 11:27:07 PM
Since the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked....

I see a lot about different lines, I'm only familiar with good ol' nylon monofilament.  What is "braided" line, why is it "better", are there any drawbacks, and is nylon going the way of the dodo?

If I don't know others must not know too, so consider this a public service  ;)

Braided lines are generally considered more sensitive. The advantages are: sensitivity, small diameter (eg. a 30 lb test Tuff line has the diameter of approx. 8 lb. test), generally stronger. The disadvantages are: cost, has a tendency to "dig" into your line on the reel, tends to fray after use.

Are they nylon?

I can see the advantage of lower diameter in a place with strong current (i.e. in a river), and it would increase the capacity of of your reel.  How much more expensive?  I guess its not really worth it if I'm just dabbling at the dock eh?

PS
is it really braided as in 3 strands wound together?

A spool of 1200 yards of 30 lb. Tuff XP would cost $49.99. I would not recommend buying it if you're just fishing off the docks.

They got themselves a new customer!  :D

I also have about $4000 to spend on an insurance claim... I'll see how the rest of their prices are.

I must also add they retain no memory and do not stretch which makes for more solid hook sets and increased sensitivtiy especially in strong current.  Expect to pay about 40-50 dollars for a 300 yd spool.

if you bought 30 lbs tuff xp for the price you say for the amount you say....... someone's employee goofed  ;D this does occasionally happen in retail.
I guarantee you will NOT find 1200 yards of any kind of tuff line for that kind of price.

If you got it for that price set us up as I am sure everyone of us will meet you there to get that price. I usually just get it spooled on for me so that I get exactly what I need,

Good stuff maybe an employee put the wrong tag on it or something lucky for you I guess

That looks like the 330 yard box of 30#- I say that only because it looks proportionatly like the box that my 30 and 65# came in. I think the factory mislabled the tag. If it's really a spool of 1200 yard - wow you scooped a smokin' deal. It's always nice to get a sweet one once in a while.

Thats not 1200 yards...I just bought a service spool of power pro ( 1500 yards ), its about 6 inches round and 8 inches tall...thats definitely not a service spool and $45 for 300 yards is the price I would expect for 300 of a good braid.

Sorry no way...back to the question: braid vs mono.

Yes it is way more expensive but it last much longer too.  I have 30lb fireline that has seen 4 seasons on Fraser and is still good so it isnt totally fair to say its more expensive.

The low stretch is great for flossing, as soon as the hook hits the fish, bam its on hard as there is no stretch.

Visibility of braid is a downfall in some fisheries...makes no difference on the fraser where the fish don't see the line (or even bite for that matter).  On the vedder for reds I use my fraser rod with braid but I run mono from the float down so the visibility issue isnt a factory in that clear water fishery.

I dont find that my power pro digs into my spool, they key is to load your reel with a lot of tension on the spool...I had to take 3 breaks from spooling up cause I had so much tension on the spool.

Its strength can be a weakness too.  If you snag up with power pro you can damage your reel pulling on the snag to snap it off - another good reason to use mono under the float.

Over all braid is a good line for certain applications.
