Title: Vedder success July 10
Post by: summersteel on July 10, 2005, 02:23:31 PM
Gooey and I did well today, both taking home a spring.. Gooey had a hot day as he hooked three springs. I got the first sockeye of the year, bigger than average and dime silver. It was a great fighter with some spectacular jumps... quickly released.  It took roe with a bit of red wool for added colour. Will have pictures soon. My spring was pretty small, but Gooey's was 17lbs.

Well I was at the chilliwack fish hatchery yesterday and saw 10 red springs, and I couldn't believe it there was 1 doe chum in there as well, pretty earily for a chum in the hatchery. Maybe we are heading for a real good season ahead. YEEHAA. ;D

Oh and a chum this early mark? I'm pretty sure it would most likely be a sockeye......

First light fish?

Hi Sterling, no not first light. We decided that we always end up hooking our fish around 9:00am anyway so we slept in. We left Vancouver at 5:00am, didn't get to the river till 6:00am and of course it paid off. We got the first fish at ...9:00am.  Yesterday at the Cap there was a big spring in there already, and it was digging a nest.

Water looks good. What kind of level is she in now? I mean "High, medium flow or rushing water or just perfect"?

The water was great, yes its high but these beuatiful slots were popping up where it was too shallow before...they were in perfect shape and really productive!    The river had great color/vis too.
I think these

I find these reds very powerful and fiesty...dont be afraid to go heavy on them.

I was using my fraser rod: 11'6 spooled with 50 lb power pro.  Stuck my drennan on the PP and tied off to a swivel.  From there I ran about 5-6 feet of 15lb maxima with 3 split shot a couple feet up from a 2/0 gami.  Bit of wool and some roe and that did the trick.

I am really pleased with how this rig fished (especially the power pro line).  I snapped off 10 times in the last 2 trips (snags etc) and I still have my drennan so it seems to be a good way to fish when the water is high and you need a little more muscle to control the awesome fish.

Iv never used roe for a bait how do you get it to stay on your hook.
Thats sweet too see 2 Reds coming out of the Vedder! Where abouts Did you guys hook into them?
You guys think the best time to fish is around 9? Well Ill have to try my luck around then.
Thanks for the Photos, now i really got to get my line out there!

What I cant believe is how dark those fish look already. The larger one looks worse than the smaller one. You smoking those fish?

I've eaten a spring that dark before, and it was fabulous.  They have to get pretty bad before the meat is unappetizing.  :P

I think we in BC are pretty spoiled and picky when it comes to our salmon; after all, we can afford to be!  I would eat those fish without hesitation.  Taste better than farmed fish at any rate.

I agree No Way that any wild fish tastes better than farmed fish. I wont eat at a restaurant that serves that garbage. I tend to smoke those fish though and eat the nice chrome ones. I agree though we are pretty spoiled.

The vedder reds tend to turn color pretty fast. Last summer my buddie got one with sea lice and it was about the same color as BP's.

So was that fish caught upper river or lower river?

I think reds turn color quickly but flesh quality remains high.  Keep in mind my fish had be bonked for at least an hour and a half prior to that pic and the clouds were out so it wasnt as bright.

The belly of my fish was thick and fatty...PRIME shape.   One meal and several lunches made it ot th bar b que and was excellent, the rest is going in the smoker tonight.

Gooey was it upper river or lower river. If you dont want to answer that just say you dont want to answer that. Why wasnt the fish on ice? Leaving it out for an hour is really not good. I keep a cooler in my truck at all times full with ice when salmon fishing. Once I bonk a fish its a quick picture than into the cooler it goes.

yeesh, now people are giving us advice on cooling the fish too!!  Yes Gooey and I usually bring a cooler but that day we were a bit lazy I guess.  As biffchan says, these fish are always an bit darker but the meat is still like that of a chromer.  Every year we take a few that are bright silver out of the Vedder or Chehalis, but for the most part they have that brown tinge to them.

I thought it was obvious that BP is not going to tell where they caught the fish. ::)

Doesnt really matter as those fish are on the move so you just have to be lucky and hit the right spots.

I guess I'll finally have to respond in some way as to where the fish were caught. I don't like to answer this question because they can be caught anywhere on the river. You just have to be looking around in all your favourite spots for them. You can catch them in the lower one day and the upper the next, so it is pointless to ask that question and past experience has taught me that if you tell a guy abouit a spot that you had success in... they'll be there with all thier friends tomorrow. Sorry.

Ya the Vedder is such a secret river LOL Nobody asked you specifically where you were fishing and personally I dont care we just asked upper or lower not a specific location. No biggy lets move on this topic is going in the wrong direction now anyways.
