Title: Where to go?? Tofino... Ucuelet.. Bamfield.. Port Alberni
Post by: roeman on April 24, 2005, 08:58:02 PM
Planning a trip for the first couple of weeks of August, any suggestions on where to go.  Wanting to camp in a tent, would prefer to at a site that is together with a marina to launch the boat.  Also taking along my 13 year old daughter, so if there was a place that had swimming, other than the ocean that would be great.  Heard of China Creek near Port Alberni, any been there?
Would love to find a place to fish for spings but also fly fish for coho
Maybe a tough trip to fill but any help would be appreciated
Thanks

I would have to suggest Tofino. I have been goin every year now ,and we go around the 1st 2nd week of august. We camp at crystal cove and it is such a nice camping area, they have a nice beach which is beautiful and is right by the camping area. We keep our boat at Weigh West and they freeze your fish and keep them for you till you leave so it is perfect.
PM if you have any questions

I would go with Tofino or Uculet.  The Weigh West people at Tofino are top notch.  China Creek tends to fill up  in late June and stay that way until Labour Day.  Also in the canal early August puts you at the tail end of the sockeye run and a little too early for the springs, unless you're willing to run down to the Bamfield area. Driving into Bamfield can be an adventure in itself, but if you're up to it there is a good campground and marina at Poet Nook.

A 3rd vote for Tofino. Lots of variety of fish to go after. Hali offshore, salmon all over, and salmon and trout in the rivers.

I went about that time of year a few years ago, in the evenings, go to Tonquin beach, and cast green/pearl, and blue/pearl buzz bombs, in the 2 inch range, off the rocks. My dad picked up a very good sized perch, and I got a decent wild coho, right off the rocks. There's something unique about taking a salmon off the beach in the surf in the salt, very cool to try out.

We didn't have a boat, but had a great time regardless. Try some surfing while you're there, it's harder, but more fun than it looks.

I would have to say Tofino like spudcote i havent fished it in a boat but i know many people that say its great. I saw a guy catch about a 15 pound chinook off the docks right in town. You could fish port but its gonna be a trip to find chinook because there wouldnt be many in the inlet yet. Ports best end of aug/ start of sept. I think gold river is the same as port. It may be a bit of a trip from the launch until mid/late aug.

poetts nook is up by gold river/tahsis.
As a previous post mentioned Poetts Nook is just this side of Bamfield.

The drive in from Port Alberni is a bit of adventure in itself, especially when towing a boat but once you get there PN is a lovely spot to stay and the fishing can be excellent.

Make sure your boat is well tied down on your trailer as the road can be a bit rough at times.
Also on my last trip there I was told to make sure your air intake on your outboard motor is covered over to prevent dust from being sucked into your engine when you first start it after the trip in. A mechanic in Bamfield said he gets lot of work working on motors from some people that do not especially when the road in is very dusty.

Fishing in Tofino in august is awsome if your have a boat. Cohos are abundent and are not hard to find. A big boat is not need if you stay inside the islands cause they protect you from the open ocean. If your buy a chart you can plot reefs on a gps which produce awsome jigging and fishing areas. We ran a 16foot champion with 100hp and some we went out into the open ocean ,you have to pick your days and know your boat. goodluck
PS: Weather changes fast!

Funny how people talk Tofino, Tofino, Tofino all the damned time.
In fact Tofino is a long run from the action and knowledgeable fishermen want to be closer to Ukee-as close as possible in fact.
