Title: lower Fraser March 19
Post by: lucky on March 19, 2005, 02:58:51 PM
Since I was out that way anyways thought i would try some barfishing, after almost an hour with only a couple small nibbles I was about to pack it in ,  when the rod started dancing, caught and released a nice looking dolly of about 7 pounds. After that it started raining so I headed for home

Hard to estimate the size of the fish from that photo. Here's another one with the hand.

It's a beautiful fish, body coloration is great. Look how far back the jaw extends, fantastic looking predator. Personally, I think it is a solid fish, but not reaching 7lb. Not that it matters, because it is a nice fish anyways. :) A 7lb bull trout is huge.... I've only seen one fish that easily reached 10lb in the Lower Fraser. It was easily over 30 inches long and I could put my fist into its mouth. :o

So how big is this one below? ;)

Nice to see some good fishing in the Lower Fraser already, I may head out soon to give it a go. If the water clarity is not great, I probably won't though, as I want to spin for them.

I was there that day... the fish rodney hold on to is about  3.5 to 4lb MAX...  Bull trout had a really long profile but rather skinny so it often give a wrong impression to others for its weight.  As for lucky's fish, from my experiences that fish is about 5.5lb.  It got the length but the girth is rather small. Again, i'm not saying it could not be a 7lb fish because i wasn't at the scene but, by the looks of it, it sure dosen't.    goodluck fishing.

The skinny ones are kelts that are living in the river waiting for the fry to hatch so they can follow them down to the estuary and have a feast for a couple month before they make they way back up the river in june to feed on the pink eggs and to spawn again in oct, nov. The ones that come back in june/july are in their prime and fight really good.

Here is an example of a fresh healthy sea-run bull on his way back up from the estuary of the fraser.

I give Rodney's fish 2.5lbs. Its not really fair, all you little guys can hold up fish and they look like monsters.

Late Fall will produce the monsters, I've caught a couple big ones then.

Hey, I am not THAT SMALL! :o ;D

FF is right about the June fish, much fiestier and more solid. The fish I encounter this time of the year are usually very sluggish.

No Argument there Kelly, it's all just good fun. What else would fishermen talk about if we don't make fun of each other's size?

My spinners.

If you are coming over from the island to try in May or June, give me a shout in advance.

Kellya, you can also bar fish with roe.  However, my preference are spinners because you can cover more water and you are also active at the same time.
