Im planning on giving it a shot regardless.

So does the ex-derby top three placer have tips for those who are entering the derby? ;)
-
I do not fish competitively.
-
Yep, think I'll come and watch and possibly partake in the gong show.
-
I think I'll fish on the 25th before the fish get pounded, catch myself a winner, keep it in the fridge overnight and then win the derby :D
Actually, as much as I love fishing for steelhead I have yet to kill one. I figure if your going to go to all the work to catch one you might as well get something more permanent than a meal.

I love the Boxing day derby. It still makes me laugh, I'll catch fish on both days before and after the derby but be damned if I can get one on the big day. It's just too much pressure for me - the steelies must be able to feel my heartbeat thru the line because I'm probably squeezing my (fishing) rod too tight.

Be disorganized would be my tip ;D

I'll fish after the derby's over, 28th or so.

Personally, I don't fish derbies anywhere or anytime. However, I will probably be at the F and G club to take some pics.

How about a Jensen egg attached to the ghost shrimp.... ;)

Maybe a little early for the ghost shrimp fizel . Go with the Jensen egg and just tuck it up under a little egg shaped piece of peach wool . Maybe blend in a little white with that peach . 8)
Let me know how big the your fish weighed ;)
I'll be using a little bag of magic myself , roe that is ...
Good Luck to all ;D ;D

Although I don't fish competitively, I usually fish on Derby day just to see the weighed-in steelies to get pumped up for the season. One year I missed my golden chance to win something. I had 2 hatcheries (when it was allowed) on Derby Day, only to find out less than 10 fish weighed in. But couldn't complain on a 2-fish day. This year, will skip fishing Derby Day. Just too many guests coming for Christmas. It is a good idea to fish before Derby day, as hundreds of skilled steelheaders can surely dig up most available steelies in the river. Just for a laugh, my tips for Derby Day is to camp out there the night before so you can have the best spot.... ;D ;D ;D

Ive goin 4 years starit now with one lost fish for my effort's. Im goin for the winner this year. ;D

niceeeeeeeeeee now that's an idea!
I'll be trying out some of my Japanese eyeless hooks on those steelies and some floro carbon leader line too.
