As defined in the regulation book.... snagging is considered Intentionally hooking a fish in any part of the body besides it's mouth.
So would "Flossing" basically force feeding the fish illegal to keep?
It is a proven fact that Salmon swim upstream with their mouths open.. so if your hook happens to catch it in the yapper, but the fish did not "take" your bait then would that be wrong to keep as well. Of course we would never be able to prove that point but if flossing is illegal and/or unethical then we should have that printed in the regs and bann it completley from all our lakes/rivers INCLUDING the fraser and sockeye fisheries.
To allow it during sockeye season and in the fraser and not to allow it on another river at any time of the season just baffles my mind.
And what is more baffling are the ppl that beek off to others for doing it, but give themselves a grey zone during sockeye time.
Would like to know what others think.

I plan to fish on Wednesday....
ROTFL! As you can see this horse has been flogged enough. :(
-
oh no!!!! not this stuff again!!!!

Hey there FishGz, after you read everything Rod's put out
for you get back to us, okay. See you in a week. :D
-
As defined in the regulation book.... snagging is considered Intentionally hooking a fish in any part of the body besides it's mouth.
I'll bite (pun intended)
On the quote, and in the regs, it says intentionally. So, lets say I hook a chum in the dorsal fin. I did not snag it because I did not intentionally attempt to do so. Therefore, I should be allowed to keep the fish because it was not snagged.
I have great problem with this. My ethics are different than yours, and yours are different than mine. Feel free to critique my meathods and allow me to critique yours. When we are done, we should be able to smile at each other and say great day. One or both of us should have learned something. If either of the party does not listen or chooses to isolate themself, then that person is the loser.
These discussions are good for the forum. The problem is being able to listen and to tell your story effectively.
Somebody else take a crack at it! Lets listen and learn.

This is very interesting!
The flossing debate comes out with out fail around sockeye season...and now in Coho season too. My guess is that we will also see it in Steelhead season and probably sooner or later, in Deer and Moose season too!
Bottom line is that flossing metastised (see defintion below) in our beloved sport.
Sockeye is an anomily in tems of the number of returning fish (very high), duration of the season (2-4 week - short), and the fact that they don't bite with regularity in fresh water. This means if we want a crack at them the sports guy has to hit them hard and flossing does just that. If DFO does its job and creates sports openings when the stocks can support it...I don't mind HARVESTING my share (10-12 this this past season).
Coho/springs/steelhead/chum etc. are a different story. We have 2-3 months to harvest coho, steelhead are available 4+ months of the year, these fish BITE - they donw need to be flossed, etc etc...this is why I don't like seeing flossing on the vedder but think its ok on the fraser.
My simple fix: change the definition of snagging to any fish that is hooked but has not taken the presention (in the mouth area). Biffs coho hooked on a spinner in the snout is fair game, a flossed steelhead/salmon is not.
Shut down the sockeye...if needed yes, its worth it to protect our local rivers from the scourge of flossers
Metastasize:
1)To be changed or transformed, especially dangerously: “a need for love that would metastasize into an insatiable craving for attention” (Michiko Kakutani).
2) To spread, especially destructively: “ [disinformation]... that even now continues to metastasize... to such a degree that myth threatens to overthrow history” (Gore Vidal).

I plan to fish on Wednesday....
where?
-
Well, I think that snagging, flossing, bottom bouncing, fly flossing ect are generally not very nice things to do to fish. But I also think that fresh water salmon should be C&R for most of the season. Does that make me crazy?
The voices in my head tell me that I am not crazy.

Also in the regs:
snagging (foul hooking)… hooking a fish in
any other part of its body than the mouth.
Attempting to snag fish of any species is
prohibited. Any fish willfully or accidently
snagged must be released immediately.
So, if its not hooked in the mouth it MUST be let go (accidently hooked, or purposefully)
If you ATTEMPT to hook a fish (of ANY species) anywhere OTHER than the mouth, you are breaking the regs (prohibited)
The grey area with flossing, is that it falls into the legal definition of NOT snagging. The fisherman is attempting to hook a fish, IN the mouth. (usually in the CORNER of the MOUTH).
I have personal feelings about the approriate place for this, and it's ethicality (word?), but I'm not going to venture into that quagmire - because it leads down the road to P.E.T.A. :(
You guys need to get out and FISH MORE!
-
Correct. I believe that anyone who wants to put flossing on the table should put presure on FDO to change their regs to make it illegal. In the mean time, however, flossing is considered legal by the DFO. I still like the discussion though.
-
Why is one speicies of fish exluded from flossing but not others ? Should we not respect all our stocks equally
-
This discussion goes on, ad infinitum, ad nauseam.
-
hey a quick q's
everytime i have tryied bb i have the same problem fish on every minute litterly and there all snagged? whaat am i doing wrong and tips
also when youy have a foul hooked fish on do you play the fish and remove the hook and safly release it OR do you just snap the line and let the fish go maybe with the hook and lead it the back i have had people b**** about it both ways so i dont know what the proper way to do it is
p.s these fish are not intentionaly foul hooked
-
What lb test would you use for flossing a MOOSE!
By the way, why are we not measuring lines in Metric! Grams, kilograms etc! ;)
-
Scalpers, take a look at the drift baits and spinning sections of this new article (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/2004/1104_01.html) we just put up. There are a few points mentioned regarding how not to unintentionally foul hook fish.
-
Scalper 66,
Imagine a fish foul hooked in the belly and someone slams into their rod to snap the line and let the fish go. Imagine the rip in the fishes belly before the line breaks. Always realease fish gently!
Bigguy,
What are you thinking! Metric! I'm too old to recalculate things in to 4.54kg leader or 13.62kg mainline etc. Think about that next time you throw your 85g. BB in the Fraser next summer. ;D
-
Maybe everyones freyed nerves are starting to heal a little after all the combat fishing on the fraser this summer...definitely things are emore civil now. ..congrats everyone!
And joedavis, you know what our mothers always said; if your not part of the answer you are part of the problem!
Save your energy and dont waste posting space hear with negative comments...if your sick of the flossing debte, for petes sake dont open a thread called Snagging vs Flossing!!! If you don't have an opinion and don't want to contribute to the discussion...just stay outta it!
I absolutely feel that flossing is no different from snagging...just close enough to the mouth to get away with it. I also feel that its a problem within the sports fishing industry that needs to be addressed.
Once again thank you to everyone who has contribute positively on this topic!
-
i'm with joedavis... this thread is a waste of time.
tooo many grey areas and tooo many double standards.
whether you approach it in a civil or heated manner, its a topic that will never be resolved (unless dfo lay out strict guidelines).
its because of semantics and all the grey areas that we're seeing the 'over flow' of these methods, onto the vedder and chehalis river......why should any of us be surprised?
-
Man, no wonder I don't post on this site anymore........I came on here today to see how the fishing was, maybe chat with a couple of old friends and all I see is a bunch of whiny elitists, doesn't any one just fish anymore??????
this site has really gone down hill in the last year....too bad because I used to really enjoy reading posts on here....I hope you guys have fun arguing amongst yourselfs, maybe get out and fish a little more....... might cure whatever is wrong with you guys!!!
Rick.
-
Rick if you wanted a fishing report why did you open the Flossing vs Snagging thread??? I think you will find some good reports in the "FISHING REPORTS" section....you must have mistakenly clicked "General Discussion" right!
I don't know whats the matter with you guys (the ones who complain about the debate). If you don't want to get involved then don't...everyone is cool with that.
Otherwise every time a flosser comes in and starts flossings and snagginga whole by rippin his gear thru a nice run I am floating...the disrspect I have for this fishing method will depend and my position will be further polarized.
-
Thats my point gooey there are no fishing reports any more!!!! I checked the fishing report section and every post starts out as a report and then guickly retorts into name calling and arguing......I just happened to click on this thread and noticed more of the same, I just wish this forum would return to the way it used to be!!!!
JUST AN OBSERVATION
Rick.
-
Oh come on guy's.......the elusive fish season is just around the corner.......I'll be back on the water in mid January.....what about you guy's?
-
You betcha....walking up and down the river getting casting practice :D
-
Ya, speaking of name calling, let's all label everyone as flossers but I'll stick around anyways for what reason... I'm not sure...
There aren't any fishing report possibly some have not caught a coho this season?
This came out and into the drink last Friday.
Still lots of fish out there, not exactly sure why some are whining about whining on a fishing forum. It IS a fishing forum after all.... ::)
What baffles me even more is the fact some are judging the quality of a website based on the members participating in the forum.... Yet when the moderators eliminate such name callings, the forum is apparently too tightly controlled?
It ain't no popularity contest. I couldn't care less if one forum has more members than others. bcfishingreports.com has more members, but it requires you to be a member to read the posts. fishbc has five times more members than here, but it primarily caters fly anglers. This is here for you to learn and kill some time. The fishing reports do include fishing in it, but as well as observations of what is going on out there. Thanks to posters, anglers will be aware of the big black bear at Norrish, the illegal fisheries in the Fraser, poachers in certain streams, break-ins in Chilliwack River, etc. I personally like to know where poaching is taking place, where my car would be safe, where that big black bear is so I can avoid it.

Oops! Sorry, I forgot we're not supposed to "brag" on the forum.... Not to mention if we catch too many, people will start to wonder how ethical our technique is... Oh wait, and we also are prohibited to ask questions regarding waters that we are unfamiliar with as others who can't fish as "ethical" as me will crowd the spot. :)
Getting the drift? It's like driving, if you start out with a negative attitude, you'll end up hating one anyway.
-
Curse you - You braggard! ::)
-
This is what happens when everyone has a ****ty coho year.
;D
coho? what is a coho? jk it doesn't matter to me if I get a coho, spring, chum whatever just having fun fishing is good enough for me. but I do like coho especially smoked coho mmmmm, fond memories of them. like last year, maybe tomorrow, just gotta get out more
-
If you're looking for the fight of the fish, chums are under-rated as fighters.
-
Yes a ***ty year. So I guess thats what their calling it when we actually get decent amounts of rain spread out over reasonable intervals. Maybe you guys are just getting too used to the low and clear.
-
Chum, yes, I agree, the guides fish for them when their season is over and they just wanna have fun. they target chum for their fight, I love the way they fight too
-
My God, I've been reprimanded! My own mother has never spoken so harshly! :o
Rodney posted 24 freaking pages worth of comments by members regarding this issue and some people think that they can still shed new light onto this old and tiresome debate. It's time to lay it to rest....until the next sockeye season, like some had suggested. ;D
Since I have nothing positive to add as Gooey says, I am officially leaving this site for good. I feel tired. Gooey, your mother gave you good advice, but she forgot to give you spellchecker, as your spelling is, well...., not very good. If you want write impressively you've got to spell "metastasize" properly the first time or else you'll end up sounding like Homer Simpson.
OK, I'm off to join the others who have gone off into the sunset, to be part of the army of the silent. Where are you Randog?? Where is Chris Gadsden?? Tight lines and good fishing to all. Good Bye! ;D
-
This poor horse sure has been flossed enough, huh??. ::)
Just to add a few feet to the leader, Ill say that just because DFO doesnt say flossing is illegal dosnt mean Ill do it. For example, these guys said it was ok for driftnets to operate in the Fraser.
These are not people Id base my personal fishing ethics on.
:-X :-X :-X :-X
-
And CG doesnt have a computer at the moment poor guy. His house is being torn down around him and rebuilt.
He's hanging in there though and Im sure soon he'll be banging out some reports.
He's been getting into some fish too, but hasnt been out much last couple of days though.
-
I just want to get out of the house, meet new people and catch fish!!! ;D
-
I just want to get out of the house, meet new people and catch fish!!! ;D
Yup! The first being the hardest, with the 3rd being a close second :)
-
My own teeth snags food scraps so I floss them every night! Is that legal? sheesh !! ::)
-
This poor horse sure has been flossed enough, huh??. ::)
Yep, look at it! So clean! ;D

My own teeth snags food scraps so I floss them every night! Is that legal? sheesh !! ::)
That depends BW, what's the average length of your floss line? ;)
-
I'm beginning to realize why I like hunting so much more now, no flossing debate ;D
-
Isn't that the truth !
-
Good one Rod!
Fishin Freak...we could always bring up road hunting ;D ;D
-
I'm laughing my arse off. Hehehehe it's way too funny, man! Harvesting sockeyes is top priority, you know. Never mind hypocrisy. Gotta have them sockeyes.
wink wink nudge nudge.
I thing I notice alot lately that I can't stand is the gomers who cut off the heads and leave them at the river. I see some people actually filleting fish too, man.
