Title: forgot to backfill my levelwind reel for braided line
Post by: dennisK on November 01, 2004, 12:52:48 PM
I should have read the instructions.

The braided line i bought says my reel may "slip" if I do not put mono back fill on it, or something called compression tape?

I just spooled on about 150yds of the stuff.

Do I have to re-spool?  If so, what technique with mono line back fill is suggested? 10lb mono? 15mono lb mono?

I'm using the powr pro stuff. 50lb.

The easiest way is to bring your reel to your local tackle shop and have them put on the backing for you and then connect your braid line to your backing.

I know people use 30# flyline backing. Ive used mono backing just to bring my fireline to the top of the spool. I wouldn't use anything less than 20# Maxima. You really need to be carefull with the splice not new braided likes to slip with mono knots. As for compression tape - I think most people use one layer of duct tape. I do.

Don't worry about the mono backing because of the so called 'slip' which virtually non existent. Neither me or any of my buddies have had a problem without using a backing. At the tackle stores they'll throw on half a spool of backing most of the time because there to cheap to fully spool it up with a braided line.

Lived the "slip" nightmare...cold weather - 3 reels, all slipped....way sucked.  Everytime it warmed up, they didn't and when it got cold they did.  Put the Mono on :(

yes,dragonspeed is right.
you'll have problem with slip when its cold,i think the spool shrink a bit in cold weather. i use painter masking tape on bottom of the spool for the braided line to dig in.good luck!
