Hello, I'm looking into sturgeon fishing and was wondering what rods/reels you guys would recommend. I was suggested using the 8ft Sturgeon King trophy xl and the Penn Squall 30ld, but I would like to hear what others think. Would it be easier to shore fish with a spinning rod or a levelwind?

definitely get the 12 foot big water rod i saw people land 6-8 ft sturgeon with it. I had trouble casting where i needed to with my 8 ft rod.

You have more fish control with a proper 8ft rod, the longer rods have a much longer butt that is difficult to deal with. If you're having trouble casting with the shorter rod it's due to the weight pairing of your lead and the flex of your tip.
The Daiwa Proteus or Okuma PCH both in XH you can toss a 16 oz weight with 130-150# braid a very long way and have a chance at handling almost any fish you hook up to.

A narrower reel I feel is easier to cast as the line lays much more even. The Fathom 40N 2 speed is pretty awesome and you can find deals on the Version 1 as opposed to the Version II. I have both and they're great, the line pickup of the version II is slightly higher which comes in handy when burning in your gear over top of rocky areas.

if fishing from a boat the Trophy XL 8' rod will work great, easier to bring a fish to the boat and if shore fishing the longer heavy action spinning set up will help with casting distance

I will be fishing off shore so casting distance will matter; the previous setup i mentioned looks difficult to cast far so I guess i'm leaning into a spinning setup. Any recommendations?
