Been noticing the increase in coho numbers this year especially ? I think they should reconsider an earlier opening time to allow bar fishing lower fraser.

I would certainly love to have a chance to spincast for them in the tidal fraser. Doubt it tho

Were protecting steelhead remember....
-
lol not a chance.

The coho closure is nothing to do with a lack of coho and everything to do with other endangered stocks co migrating in the same time frame.

Oh but the Gill nets do less damage correct. What a crock of cupcakes 😒 .
This fishery could open up first week of October no problem. Hatchery only. Allow the older generation some fishing opertunity that can't necessarily access other options. Or the father son to go grab a lawn chair and enjoy.
Oh hey look at that Gill net floating down the river...dfo...no fish for you! Unless you are First Nations.
-
I don’t think they can use gillnets right now
-
The Gill nets have been in river since before May and will be to mid November. Openings or not.

Hey Rod, Great video catching that white spring on the Vedder yesterday - way to persevere and stick with it.
Do you happen to have any insight as to if/when there might be an opening for hatchery coho on the Fraser this year? Are they going to wait until the bulk of the run has passed through before they open it (3rd - 4th week of October), like they've been doing in recent years (if there even was an opening)?

The closure is the steelhead window closure and it’s never going to go away and if anything happens it’s only going to get bigger. I believe it’s the same as last year
The steelhead closure starts (Mouth to Port Mann Bridge 19-Sep 30-Oct)

So why Gill nets and chum fisheries? This is way more destruction than bar fishing can ever be.

Commercial fisheries have the same closures
42-day window 19-Sep to 30-Oct
closure (commercial
drift and set gillnet,
purse seine, beach
seine, and shallow
seine fisheries and
recreational fisheries
occurring in the Fraser
River)
27-day window 26-Sep to 22-Oct
closure (commercial
troll fisheries and
FSC fisheries
occurring in the
Fraser River)

It's unfortunate that the fraser is closed for fall coho fishing but I gladly accept it if it helps protect our steelhead. I havent't bar fished for coho in 10 years plus I think. However if they do open in November well past it's prime, I plan to go and take my young son...easier to watch him on the fraser than the other rivers.

Pretty much. ;D
Can you post up the link of the doc where you're getting the IFS dates from please? I'm having these conversations about this year's hatchery coho opening times and I can't seem to find the most updated dates. Thanks.

LOL I'm all for it. The state of our interior steelhead is dire so much needed.

It would be nice to see an earlier opening for Coho in the tidal Fraser. Maybe a non bait opening at first then leading to a bait rec fishery later on after the steelhead of concern have passed. I have never caught a steelhead in the tidal portion of the fraser but do see the concern when using bait that a steelhead might take a bite. I have also never caught a steelhead in the open ocean ether. Has anyone caught a steelhead in the ocean or tidal areas of the fraser?

Many moons ago while trolling for springs in North Bentinck Arm out of Bella Coola we caught a monster steelhead. Quite a surprise.

I've seen a steelhead caught in Haida Gwaii trolling for springs.
A friend of mine caught a steelhead bar fishing for coho in the tidal fraser a few years ago

I miss those bar fishing days few minutes from my house. Thermos of coffee or a couple cold beers depending on wether it was a morning tide or afternoon tide. Relaxed in a lawn chair. Pleasant days.

Yes. Back in the 80s when steelhead were plentiful and there was no closures. We bar fished at Brownsville using fresh chum roe from Berries Baits for cohos. Ivan Berrys store was the closest tackle shop to us living in Surrey at the time. Ivan always always greeted you with a smile. What a great fishery that was. It’s really pathetic you can’t bar fish anymore for salmon. There was a lot of old timers and colourful characters back in those days and everybody knew each other by name. I terribly miss those days.
-
Fred, Curly, Scott Paper Mike, Barnacle Bill , Mr Gibson and Joe just to name a few from the 80's. Good old days on Brownsville Bar.
-
I am willing to bet there will be Gill nets in the fraser during those windows. Opening or not. There will be nets. For the slim chance of catching a steelhead. Chances are probably so low. Ridiculous in my opinion. It was never bar fishing that killed the steelhead or continue to. It is the relentless netting of the river.

You were there! Also Little Paul and Bullsh@t Larry the king of jacks. That dude caught so many coho jacks it was unreal. Lol
-
Yes I was there. I would get dropped off by my dad or ride my bike down the hill from 96 Ave. Then at 16 I got my first car and started driving down to the bar. The old guys always made a spot for me to fish. As a young person my experience was always good. Still to today I will go down to the bar and give coho fishing a go when it opens. I now fish Glen Valley area, when it is open.
-
I never fished Brownsville being from Richmond always bar fished the north arm. My dad and Ivan Berry were close friends and have many great memories hanging out with my dad, Ivan and his son mike. Camping, fishing and hanging out at the house/store on Westminster hwy.

there were far more steelhead taken, and usually killed, from the bars above the Vedder mouth before the Province set the regulation for release of all wild steelhead. From about the mid 60s into the 80s I fished mostly Duncan, MacMillan Island and to a lesser extent Glen valley. In all those yearsI never saw a steelhead taken though many claimed to catch them. There was a small group of people who fished Duncan through the winter and did catch steelhead. Another I met said they caught "summer steelhead" in June and July at Brownsville, a bar I never fished.
