Title: Trolling Freshwater for Coho
Post by: FM1989 on September 06, 2022, 01:38:51 PM
Good afternoon everyone. I am wondering what guys would use for trolling for coho around the mouth of the Vedder and Dewdney? I have my main lures for casting and retrieving but I am not sure if those would be the go to for trolling  behind a small aluminum boat. I know the areas I'm interested in are to shallow for downriggers so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction of which type lure/weight sizes etc. Much appreciated.

we used to troll those areas 20 years ago. would use the same things as casting, just add a split shot or two. spinners, crocs etc. These days there are so many boats anchored up casting, that trolling is not as practical. people end up pissed off at you for trolling in front of them. or someone casts across your lines and snags you up.

If you find the water colored up, try larger sizes, say 14 gram/ half ounce, or spinners in size #5, loud colors.

Trolling? In the mouth of the Vedder and Dewdney? Not practical with the amount of boats anchored up in both those areas. Nothing but tangled lines will be the result of that.

when I first started fishing around mouth of the Vedder 55 years ago it was all trolling and no one anchored and casted

In the 1970's we used to troll the vedder canal / sumas river with willow leaf troll and a dew worm.  Worked great.

Back in the day, weren’t Tee Spoons the trolling lure of choice at this location?

Back in the day there was a great cutthroat fishery in the Vedder canal. Trolling a flatfish with a worm. Nowadays the Cutts are long gone and you would be run over by a jet boat trying to troll in the canal.

Clarki
some trolled tee spoons for the early run Fraser Chinook at the confluence of the Fraser / Sumas.
We preferred to anchor up and fish live Ghost Shrimp on a bar rig.
it was some of the best early Chinook fishing I have experienced.
Usually started in Late April and peaked around the end of May or whenever the freshet started.

Start fishing when the fish showed up not when some idiot with a university degree says you can....

I read an old fishing book where they would use row boats and use spoons in frount of the stave for salmon

that was happening in my lifetime. Stave and the Pitt. story goes the fish move into the cleaner flow to 'clean their gills'. Similar fishing at the mouths of creeks such as Emory in the Canyon.
