Has anyone heard anything about this? Rodney? Must be a mistake unless they took away hatchery fisheries too lol
-
You're forgetting today is April 1st right ?
-
Unless that is a very elaborate fake link I don’t think it’s an April fools joke
-
I agree with Avid Angler. when looking at the DFO freshwater regualtions on line it appears the Chilliwack/vedder does not have a July 1 opening date or any opening date for that matter to fish chinooks.
Maybe this is a bad April 1 joke but it doesn't look like it.
-
On a brighter note, it does allow for 1 hatchery Coho from the Mamquam River.
It just hasn't been updated yet.
-
Well somehow DFO has manged to freak people out more then covid.
I sent an email to DFO about this i will post up the response if i get one.

Things like Chilliwack are still planned to have a July 1 opening. Here is the response
Thanks for your email
Yes, this was intended to reflect that fisheries are closed at this time, effective today (Apr.01), and until further notice.
You’ll recall that our LFV meeting we talked about reviewing regulations in all Region 2 tributaries and this will take place pre-season over the next few weeks.
Note: Dates column on our website will be updated to read “Apr 01 until further notice”.
-
I will be fishing hatchery Coho rivers with or without an opening AND I WILL be bonking hatchery fish. That's what I pay for. I honestly dont care. I'll take a fine or two per season. They can f**K right off if they think they can prevent me from retaining clipped fish that my license dollars pay for.
-
FYI, your freshwater licence dollars don't pay for any of the anadromous salmonid enhancement. That money goes directly to FFSBC which operates six hatcheries across this province and is responsible for stocking several species of trout and char, as well as some steelhead and sturgeon. The salmon conservation surcharge which you pay with the licence goes to Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, which is a proposal-driven organization providing grants to conservation-related projects across the province.

They still plan to open most of the tribs on there regular scheduled dates. They are doing this because rivers like alouettee we’re open to chinook every year for no reason. So they are reviewing things like that.
All the main hatchery rivers will be business as usual.

Folks
Perhaps we were not clear enough when we talked about this a the local SFAC meetings. The intention is for DFO to work on a table for review by the SFAC’s or a sub group as was suggested by myself at the meeting and once we have fished the DFO and SFAB review we can announce any revised fishery management measures that may come out of the review in a updated notice inseason. Our goal was to have all of this done before the last set of SFAC’s but unfortunately we did not achieve this before we had to roll over the regulations for this year. We are limited in the amount we can put on website which is why you can see “April 1 until further notice” given salmon don’t start arriving into the tribs until August at the earliest we still have plenty of time for this review to occur.
If you have any question please give me a call
Thank You,

You need to post my response too. ;D
Thanks for the prompt response Dean. I was questioning because on the page it listed no fishing for salmon from April 1st until March 31st originally, not until further notice, which was perceived by the public as there would be no salmon fishing opportunities available at all this year.
I understand that we have a situation here which is going to hinder this review process, but I recommend that we have this completed ASAP because most of my colleagues on this email list rely on having these opportunities listed so the users can plan ahead of time (with some exceptions this year of course due to Covid19). The fisheries that are going to be impacted first by this review process is the Chilliwack/Vedder River and Chehalis River summer chinook salmon fisheries, which typically begin on July 1st, as well as the Capilano River coho salmon fishery which begins as early as now.

Native stocks were extirpated after the dam construction though there used to be chinook enhancement via the ARMS hatchery. I recall being shown a fish that was taken for brood stock that was 50lb plus. I have no idea if that still continues. The Nicomekl, Little Campbell and Serpentine also have small runs with short openings. The Sep and Nic' fish are primarily enhanced.

They have been releasing 15000, 8-9 month old chilliwack whites smolts into the alouette. I don't think its been very successful. They release them on fathers day every year. Its more of a community leaning event more then anything.

Weren't you the guy that posted a picture of a fellow fishing out of bounds during Pink season on the lower Vedder? Kind of idiotic what your posting now don't you think?
Btw saw a fishing boat with a net out today while crossing the GE Bridge. Don't know if they have an opening or not. I'm guessing Springs or Oolies.

There are currently some FN communal openings for eulachon.
https://www-ops2.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fraserriver/firstnations/PDFs/CommunalOpeningTimes_Previous.pdf
No communal openings are expected for chinook salmon until most likely early August like last year. There will probably the odd ceremonial fisheries.

There may have not being any openings before August last year, but you and I both know they were out fishing before August last year.....and they will do the same this year.

Thanks for that clarification. Will any special consideration be given to openings for earlier salmon runs, for which there are quite a few, one example being the Cap blueback run?
-
DFO just does not no how to communicate. They rely to heavily on the SFAB/SFAC` system to get the word out but there is almost no participation in it.
The conspiracy theory it in me says they have no plans to open up the tribs until they allow FN's on the fraser to have wide spread fisheries.

That's the spirit! I once had a friend who bought a ticket to the movie theatre but the theatre was closed for the night. He broke in and tried to start the projector himself. When the cops showed up, he told them he'd paid his money and deserved a movie. They told him he shouldn't have bought a ticket if the theatre was closed. Needless to say, he lost that argument ::)

Hatchery system, I'm gonna fish it and most likely kill some clipped Coho.
-
Or, you could do what some of us are doing, ongoing communication with DFO through the SFAC to make sure these hatchery fisheries will be open when the season approaches.

That's the difference between only looking out for yourself and looking out for the angling community as a whole. Thank you Rod, for your efforts to ensure that everyone gets to enjoy these fisheries! I can only imagine the time and effort it takes.

I’ll back you up all the way. A person should be able to pick and choose any laws that he wants to obey. I’m going to pick speed limits first because I bought a car with capabilities to go way faster than 30 km/h in school zones. And that stupid “can’t take money out of banks if it’s not yours” thing is garbage, why do they have money there at all if I can’t have some?
And don’t get me started on the “age of consent” topic, that one really needs breaking. Hike and fish, what school do your kids go to?
-
Back on topic, yes, there will be some restrictions to fishing this year but I think most of those are not COVID related. They were coming anyway and this will just be used as a cover. But what I think will be really interesting is what happens in three years. Pretty much no volunteer hatchery is going to be able to clip their Coho and some of the larger facilities, unless they have automated machines, aren't going to be either.
There is going to be a whole bunch of "wild" hatchery coho coming back in the near future. Good luck keeping one, and will be the pretty much the end of any truly wild stains out there.
-
This comes from an abundance of caution from the government. They really don't want someone to die cause they didn't close a fishery. I mean, what other recreational activities are still on? They just closed Stanley Park to cars and the sea wall to bicycles so we shouldn't feel picked on.
That said, I will almost certainly fish, alone, and if they think it's worth the effort to come give me a ticket I'll just pay it. (And they better stay 10 feet away from me while they are writing it!)
-
All provincial parks are closing today. Press release just went out, should hit the news shortly :/

Good observation, Tylsie. Another unintended impact of COVID prevention measures. It will be interesting in three years time.

• Coho yearlings to be released in coming months are already marked so disruptions should not impact this. SEP has a whole year to mark the next year’s releases so there should be minimal impact.
-
That will make Hike and Fish very happy because we all know how much he likes his hatchery coho ;)

"This temporary measure means public and vehicle access is prohibited until further notice. All trails, roads, day-use areas, beaches, lakes, boat launches, and backcountry areas are closed to the public."
Does this mean all fishing is now closed?

how about steelhead?

it is if you have to access the water via a Provincial Park.
-

The province would never release un-clipped steelhead. Hatchery steelhead are like the plague in the eyes of provincial biologists.
-
I have heard Canada has agreed to provisions in the newest edition of the Pacific Salmon Treaty that requires all members to mass mark all hatchery chinook and coho.

This is only partly true. As of now all marking and tagging are currently paused at all DFO and community facilities. There are many SEP partners whose programs require them to release Coho as Fry becasue they do not have the facilities, space, or funds to house the Coho for 15 to 18 months until smolts. These fry are generally clipped when they reach 2.5 to 3 grams, which probably won't be happening for another month. With the physical distancing requirements it is not feasible to have clipping done in an effective manner prior to when they have to be released.
I doubt there will be any noticeable impact on the larger, more heavily enahnced systems like to the C/V but on smaller will systems the impact could be huge.
