Here is a video on our trip to the Somass River a couple of weekends ago. Enjoy!

Great video Rod - I fished the Somass last year for the first time. Actually I saw you and Kitty out on the boat while I was fishing. It was an incredible outing - constantly had fish on and lost so many and landed a lot as well. Can't wait to go back.

It's a pretty fantastic fishery for sure. One of the few abundant hatchery chinook salmon fisheries left in this province.

It won't be for much longer should the "management" regime carry on as it has and continues to. :(
Many have called this "a very good year".
And perhaps it was, as long as you weren't a Chinook that is...
81,000 caught & killed (likely more as some do not report completely nor accurately).
23,000 up the ditch
DFO overestimate of run: 30,000 plus
Shortfall on escapement approaching 10,000
Required escapement targets NOT met once again due to aggressive harvesting regime based on the non-corrected overestimate.
Doing the same thing over and over while expecting differing results has a definition...
Glad you had a fun trip Rod.
Hope "management" wraps it's few brain cells around sustainability in the close future so that perhaps others down the road might enjoy something close to similar...

My understanding is that the escapement target this year is 21,000, lower because majority of the fish are 4/5 year olds so the escapement is based on an egg target, not fish target.
-
30,000 minimum Rod.
Due to greatly reduced size (caused by hatchery influence) age is not much of a determining factor as to fecundity as it once was.
We are still very shy.

I'm just telling you the information provided by the fishery manager from the round table meetings they have weekly.
"Target was 21k. We manage for eggs. Runs will likely be 10k over the target when we are done counting."
"Seiners were under by 5k, gill netters were over by 5k, First Nations were short 4.5k."
