I'm fed up with my sounder- it will detect bottom, but will not even pick up my 5 lb. cannonball when it goes deeper than 20 feet. I tried many different sensitivity settings and switched between the kHz options, but nada. Seems to me like faulty software, but it's too late for warranty.
Do any of you have suggestions for a replacement sounder? I have a ceiling of about $300, and just want to mark bottom, and anything under my boat. Boat speed and water temp are needed, too. I had an earlier cheap Hummingbird that could pick up my small lead weight in 45 feet of water.
Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.

$300 is tough. Another $100 and you could get a unit with great mapping and down imaging. The only recommendation I have is the Garmin Echomap plus 45 CV with Canada Lake View but that's higher than your $300 cap. Radio World .ca has some for $400. There is so much technology out there these days. Having a great transducer makes all the difference when it comes to marking fish. Most times low end units will say it's a fish but its usually a rock, stump or weeds on the outside of the cone.

Also take a look at the Garmin Striker 4Plus CV at $259 from Amazon. I have the earlier model Garmin Striker 4 and it works great. The newer Plus CV model has contour mapping and ClearVu.
