Title: Centerpin Rod choice
Post by: obie1fish on September 07, 2018, 07:37:16 AM
I was looking throughout the online world and was paying special attention to last November's FWR thread. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good coho/steelhead centerpin rod? I have a good rod for handling springs, and it's sensitive enough for coho, but it's kind of heavy. I am looking for a lighter weight rod for coho and steelhead. Because I fish the Vedder, springs and chums will definitely be hooked, so noodle rods need not apply. Also, are there any new rods out there that have turned your collective heads? Thoughts on the likes of Rainshadow and even Rapala's efforts?
Thanks in advance.

Buy one of these rainshadow rod blanks and get Dave Barnes to build you a CP rod.  The blanks are very light.  It will cost you a bit over 300 dollars and you will have a nice CP rod. I bought the RX7 blanks from Searun for less than 100 dollars.  The RX8 is a bit more expensive.

BAXST1263F   10'6''   Fast   M   2   8 - 12.   3/8 - 3/4.
BAXST1264F   10'6''   Fast   MH   2   10 - 17.   3/8 - 1.   5
BAXST1324FTC   11'0''   Fast   MH   2   10 - 17.   3/8 - 1.   5
BAXST1382F   11'6''   Moderate Fast   2   6 - 10.   1/4 - 1/2.
BAXST1383F   11'6''   Fast   M   2   6 - 12.   3/8 - 3/4.

Over the last 5 years, I’ve owned various cp rods like convergence, technium, Rapala, gloomis, sage 3113mb, and 3113lb.  Eventually I got one built from the Rainshadow blanks and have really liked it.

Nick, the new owner of Hatch Match'r in Maple Ridge yesterday showed me a new Gary Loomis centrepin they are getting soon (only ones in Canada). (Apparently he has gone on his own since selling G. Loomis). It was very light and looked great.

I liked the Fenwick 1262,1263 and my favorite was and is the 1264. I still have a couple of 1264 Yellow glass rods.

Thanks, everyone. You've given me lots of fuel for thought. It looks like I'll need to do a little driving to check out a few of these. Speyman, those Fenwicks bring back memories from decades ago. The 1264 was the go-to for mooching Seymour Narrows and other tidal back eddies around that area. Classic!
