Title: Best Polarized sunglasses ???
Post by: Morty on October 10, 2017, 10:32:22 PM
Shopping for polarized glasses to see through glare on smaller rivers. What do you recommend for quality and price?  And where to buy?

Maui Jim’s for me. Expensive but defiantly worth the money!  From the interior lakes, oceans, rivers to daily use driving and yard work around the property! Cheers!

If you buy expensive glasses...You will just inevitably lose or break expensive glasses. Stay cheap on glasses as this isn't bone fishing where quality really matters

Used to by the name brand expensive ones but lost too many or they got scratched up.  Go to MEC and pick up a couple of them for $25-35 and then you won't cry if they get lost or damaged.  I have found very little difference between the $300 polarized and the cheaper ones.  Base your purchase on comfort and fit.  You also may want to pick up some in different shades for different weather so going expensive will set you back.

X2 on cheaper ones.

I love my Columbia polarized from Costco for $50.  I have a number of even cheaper ones, $25-30.  And one pair of expensive Rayban P's now used mostly for driving.  The Raybans did also serve me well fishing for Bones and Permit in Belize.

99% of the time, I wear my cheaper ones though.  I'm brutal,  I lose them, sit on them, have them fly off my face and rattle around on the boat etc.  I'm forever finding pairs of sunglasses that I thought I lost.  Down behind the couch, left in looks nooks in the garage or shed, under car seats, boat seats, in tackle bags and boxes etc.

Maybe if I bought more expensive ones I would be more careful?  I don't know though...and I don't want to risk it.

My only pair of quality polarized glasses has been MJ and I am very happy with them.

Sea Run usually puts them on sale for 15% off in the summer.

Other fishing sites recommend getting the amber tinted lenses for fishing, rather than the grey tint.

Love my Costa del mar sunglasses. Unreal lens , and are quality built. They range from  $150-300. Check out pacific net and twine.

Speak for yourself.  I have polarized Oakley's and I just ordered replacement lenses for them after 3 years on the water.  Most of the scratches came from wearing them on my hat and hitting overhead things.  I have cheap glasses too, but those are for friends who forgot their own.

Invest in a good lanyard and it'll be a lot harder to lose them.

X2 on the amber lenses.  Actually, I have been eyeing the cycling glasses on amazon with the interchangeable lenses - they include lenses designed for night riding.  I currently have some "spiderwire" branded polarized glasses with amber lenses that are great on overcast days.

Maui Jim's for me.  Only brand that offer some without the extreme base curves of most sunglasses these days and that fit my big head.

I've lost quite a few expensive sunglasses over the years usually from accidentally knocking them off my cap.  Eventually, I finally bought the Chums Orbiter.  Now my glasses just hang off my neck first and last light and can't get knocked off accidentally.

They got a few styles.

My only gripe with the Orbiters is they have a bit of memory and can get coiled from storage, but it's not too bad once they're on your neck.

Maui Jims all day, amazing quality, compared to my buddys ray-bans its night and day. I bushwalk a lot and just wear a lanyard with them, never had a problem. You get what you pay for in my opinion.

Mine were not cheap by comparison and in 3 years I neither lost nor broke them.  Believe it or not, one can bushwhack and explore without destroying their gear.

And I thought he summited them both on the same weekend!

I got Maui Jim's, pretty good, feel nice on my face and cut through the glare, but i'd say not worth the money, I love amber tinted 25dollar shades, wholesale sports used to have some awesome ones. I used my employee health spending account to buy the Maui Jims's I wouldn't pay 300dollars for sunglasses.

Smart man Jordan,   glasses need to cut glare, I just don't think people need hyper quality Polarized glasses for salmon steelhead in Rivers, bone fishing yes.... unless your trying to force feed salmon bare hooks?? Lmfao

I use a $30 pair of polarized safety glasses I picked up at Acklands... ya never know when there is going to be an explosion with flying debris on the river. Drop em...they won’t break. Lense is pretty scratch resistant. I have no issues wearing them during a bushwhack.

Ya, but it’s also nice to cut through the glare and sight fish..I’m not doing any ripping and snagging so I don’t have too many hooks flying my way. If that was the case there might be people walking around with clear glasses on rainy days  ;D

Yeah I got a pair from Acklands I think KMS tools has some really good ones too, around 35 bucks, they fog up pretty bad though, i got some wipes that help reduce that, what do other people use to keep there glasses from fogging up? if somebody wanted to get some high quality glasses cheap I have a friend that got some Ray Bans from Winners or maybe your works medical plan will allow you to use it for prescription shades with  whatever prescription is suitable for your eye sight.

Don’t forget about bugs n branches... eye lashes n angel tears. All the more reason for glasses. You can even get some that have side mirrors so you can see behind yourself. If you have an outstanding mob debt and your fishing alone they could come in handy.

Ya they do fog up pretty good come to think of it, if it’s hot and humid out.. if that happens I’m usually running pretty hot myself and shedding a layer and no hat seems to help with the fogging...if it’s bad I will just put em in my pocket and just use them to see through the water at the rivers edge.

Glasses fogging up is a problem indeed at certain times of the year.

I received this tip years ago from a steelhead broodstock guy!

You have to find a Long-Toed Salamander that lives on a Pacific Dogwood that is growing under a mature Western Hemlock. All this on a south facing slope!

When you have extracted the toe jam and placed it in a container. You have to add equal parts of Maisel Creek, Statlu Creek and Boulder Creek water in this order. Stir for 5min and apply onto your lenses with a feather from a Hermit Thrush that you would have found under the Pacific Dogwood!

Let dry and all should be fine!

I never did try this. I use wipes as well when needed!

Cheers

I’m off to Chehalis to get the creek water picked up.

Here is a  tip if you have foggy boat windows...coat em with dishwashing soap on a sponge, visibility goes down a bit but they won’t fog and the lemon smell hides the dead fish smell.

Get blue-tinted ones for big water and full sun, or amber-tinted ones for lower light conditions and spotting fish, ideally.

The people dipping at tamihi consider sunglasses a necessity rather than an option.

You can buy cheaper sunglasses and they will cut the glare just fine. But you will sacrifice longevity and take on additional eye strain over time.

Or you can buy high end sunglasses and the glare cutting will be noticeably better, they will last longer, and your eye strain will be significantly less. Of course, your wallet will be markedly lighter, but you knew that going in. ;)

Both will work. I've done both. Personally I will never go back to wearing cheap sunglasses.

That said, if $200+ Maui Jims are too expensive for you (and they would've been for me too had I not received a gift card years ago), places like MEC etc have other brands in the $50-100 range that will also be noticeably better than the cheapos.

Had maybe 20 pairs over the last fifty years.Including some with bi-focals from Onos as I need readers now.Would not recommend them as it is too easy to forget you are wearing them. This cost me a slip on the Chilliwack one day resulting in a broken bone in my hand. Now only used in my fly fishing boat or pontoon or belly boat.I like a lighter shade such as amber as I find frequently when fall sight fishing it is often overcast and lower light. Quite like my Native brand ones as they have breather vents that help cut down the fogging.

x2

I have 6 or so different pairs of shades. 3 pairs of Maui Jims. The optics are second to none. If you are not prone to breaking your shades and can afford them they are a real treat. 2 of the MJs I own have glass lenses. They have the best optics, but are a tad heavy, and not terribly shatter resistant if that is a concern for you. My other pair of MJs are polycarbonate (plastic). Way lighter and more comfortable, but optics not as good and they scratch easier. The grey MJ lenses are awesome for a bright sunny day with lots of glare on the water. Unbeatable summer glasses. The bronze lenses are the best all around, but I find not quite dark enough for bright days on the water. The HT (green) lenses are amazing for overcast/cloudy days with glare on the water. I also wear these lenses a lot for driving when it's not that sunny but the road has a lot of glare.

If I could have just one pair of MJs it would be bronze tint with glass lenses.

If you are in the market for MJs I would go to an optometrist with a ton of frames to try on. IRIS in Chilliwack is good. I'm sure many others are too. Personally I would not try on at a place that just has a 1/2 dozen or so MJ frames. There are so many diff shapes and styles if you are gonna drop this kind of coin you might as well get the ones that fit best! IRIS in Chilliwack has probably 50 different MJ frames in stock.

If a $300+ pair of MJs or other high end sunglasses are not a pragmatic option then I will agree with others that the "cheapo" polarized glasses for under $50 are actually pretty good. I have a pair of Suncloud (low end Smith) from Fred's that are pretty darn decent for $40ish I paid for them. I keep them as a back up pair in my truck in case I forget the "good ones." Also have Oakleys, Smith, and others. For the money they are certainly better value than a pair of Maui Jims. I typically do NOT wear my MJs golfing, doing yard work, and so on as I'm prone to putting them on my hat, forgetting about them, then launching them across the room when the hat comes off!! They are a treat to wear on the water/fishing, and that's all I really wear them for. As soon as I get home they go back in the soft case, and then that in the hard case (!)

I have the same pair! Totally decent for the $.
However on a bright sunny day if you wear those then slip on a pair of MJ the difference is quite noticeable in a good way. Seems like with the MJs on your eyes just totally relax. And the polarization/clairity is more "high def" than any other brand I've tried. It's like sipping Jack Daniels then trying a 12yr or older single malt!

However MJs in the $300 range are not 6 times better than a $50 pair of Sunclouds or whatever budget brand. Likewise a Simms gortex jacket is not 6 times better than a Frogtogg or whatever affordable brand. This being said if you can afford the nicer brands they do make a day on the water a bit more comfortable.

^^^This is the style that I have two of at home for fishing. Nice coverage and wrap around a bit on the sides to avoid light sneaking in on the peripheral. A little heavy but worth it for the quality IMO.
