Title: World Rivers Day On The Chilliwack Vedder River
Post by: chris gadsden on September 18, 2017, 01:26:04 PM
I hope some members on the forum will be able to attend The Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Societies river cleanup and celebration this coming Sunday. When Rodney, Terry, Lew, myself and a few others started the cleanup back in 2001 we always had a good turnout of this forums members. This has slipped a bit the last few years so this is a chance to give back to the river that many of us fish for a good part of the year. I was down to the Fraser Valley Salmon Society section this morning by the Keith Wilson Bridge and cleaned up one bag of garbage dropped by some careless people. The KWB area is being heavily worked by a lot of people hence the garbage along the parking areas and out on the bar.

Here is the info for the days events as the celebration is held on Chilliwack Lake Road at the Fish and Game Clubs grounds.

Details here.

Sunday, September 24th at the Chilliwack Fish and Game Club (48685 Chilliwack Lake Rd, Chilliwack). In celebration of BC Rivers Day this is our largest cleanup of the year!
Registration opens at 8:30 am, and BBQ starts at 12:30pm. Prize raffle begins at 1pm (ish) and you must be present to win!

We welcome exhibitors like the Waterwealth Project, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, City of Chilliwack, Fraser Valley Regional District, Fraser Riverkeepers, Fraser Valley Salmon Society and more to help educate all of us about this amazing river valley we play and live in.
All registered participants can enjoy the BBQ lunch and additional refreshments from the great folks at Tim Hortons and the Chilliwack Water Store.
Don’t forget your water bottle or a travel mug so you can partake in the refreshments.

Once again we will provide the gloves, garbage and recycling bags and you provide the 'boots on the ground'.
For the first time, you can buy your own pickup-stick (to keep) in support of the Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Society.

This is a family friendly event and it goes rain or shine.
We are working very hard to encourage folks to bring their own water bottle or travel mug to our events so we are not using single use containers. We will NOT be providing cups for coffee or water.

The lack of interest for the cleanup by anglers on this forum has been appalling.
I remember a few years ago, I offered a free ride to the cleanup and back several times and nobody took me up on my offer.

I will once again offer members a free ride to the cleanup this year. All you need to do is show up at the Holdom Sky train station at 7:30 AM on Sunday.
I have room for 3 more people in my truck besides me.

No need to share gas money; the only "catch" is I will be fishing after the cleanup, so the return to the city might be somewhat late. Bring your rods!

Thanks Milo, you have been a great supporter of the cleanup since we started the CVRCS, look forward to seeing you and hope you find some fish after.

My dad and I will come out too. I'd love to meet some of the forum folk. I'll stick around and fish for a couple of hours after. Say hi if you see me, I'll be wearing a black Arcteryx ball cap.

I can also drive if anyone needs a way out there. Meet up at Sapperton skytrain at 7:15 (even earlier than Milo, oof!), just need to do a quick detour into Abbotsford to pick up my dad. I need to be home in New West by 5pm so leaving the river around 3:30 or so. If you want a ride, send me a PM and I'll give you my cell # :D

Great offer Milo, and well done on your involvement in this cleanup.

Just remember there are many members that may not contribute at this particular cleanup but do put there time into others that are held in different locations and on other dates throughout the year.  ;)

Checked out a couple of gravel bars in the Vedder  Canal area today and there is a few tires, a tent etc I would like to get out, need a couple of strong people to help. Will bring a rope and shovel to help get the gravel out before we drag them up the bank. Maybe Dave will find a couple of people to help do that chore. The section I and the Fraser Valley Salmon Society do is between Keith Wilson Bridge and the Freeway Bridge.

I volunteer for that.
I may not be as fast or pliant as before, but the strength is still there.
And I am not afraid to deep wade in the canal. Let's do it Dave. :)

I'll be bringing my son and daughter out to this event again this year. Easy way of teaching the next generation is to show them how disgusting and disrespectful this generation can be!!

On today's tv news ( Global BC I believe ) it showed a big pile of trash dumped in the valley near a stream. Really gross. Chilliwack area.

Thanks Chris for bring up the link.  :)
People who litter / dump trash like the above example really points out good/ bad character people.
One wonders what kind of person would do such a bad deed?
Father husband friend employee would they be?
Was it done to save a few bucks from dumping fees...at what costs to our environment. Unreal.

What about the " tent city " around tesky rock ( crossing).  Is that going to be cleaned up before the fall rains ? Or is the city going to leave it.
Watch out for needles!

Cleanup volunteers on Sunday are to stay away from these tent cities. Because of all the fires Provincial government people have been very busy, things are in the works and will be discussed this Sunday.

Not sure what Chilliwack does for garbage pick-up etc. but in Maple Ridge you have to pay to dump anything.
This includes lawn trimmings and garden waste.
If you take a bed to the dump it costs $10 per mattress or boxspring.
They are almost forcing some to do illegal dumping with there high fees.
Im thinking maybe Chilliwack is run the same as Maple Ridge.
Very poorly.

Maple Ridges, Rivers day is at Alco Park, put on by ARMS society and features a Fish Pond which I have run for 17 years. There are very willing and hungry large trout. 2$ per kid attempt, BCFDF volunteers so it's great action, 11 am start on fish pond rest of event goes till 330, awesome time

There's no excuse for dumping garbage. Nobody likes paying fees but it costs money to sort refuse, transport it, and pay people a living wage to run the transfer station.

Using the argument above, you could say that the price for Islander reels is almost forcing people to steal them rather than pay for them at the fishing store.

These scumbags should at least have the decency to dump illegally behind a mall or other urban place rather than next to a creek or river  ::)

Good turnout today and thanks to all that turned out and helped make the day a success once again. A short video with Milo as he and others got a lot of garbage and tires out of the Vedder Canal. Thanks Milo for all your hard work. https://youtu.be/MdynZjuCcpc

Firstlight, I take my folks green waste and crap to the the transfer station, before in my truck and now in my car and even with the recent price hike I don't find it to be prohibitively expensive. I also score very well in the "free" book bins and more than make the trip worth it that way~
It should NEVER enter some ones head when thinking of disposal to think "damn, whats a good private stretch of rd I can toss my pile of mattresses on?"

Also BRAVO to all who worked to make today's Rivers Day clean up and all such events a great well run and fun time. I had fun seeing Chris win a prize, and even won Bent Rods (one of, they donated a few piles of stuff) jigs shirt etc prize. Thanks all

also sad to see so much crap left behind along the river, must have got 4o beer cans, I left them at the collection spot along with a found Canucks hat for you know who~

You kidding me Chris? Those other guys put at least double my effort each into the job today! ;D
But hey, at least I showed up and did my bit. As usual, nobody took me up on my offer for a free ride and some fishing after the festivities. Shame that so many people who are active posters here and big time Vedder fishermen don't make the effort to show up at these cleanups from time to time. You know who you are...

All I can say is your loss. After the cleanup, I hit a sweet spot on the river and caught a 34" perfectly chrome RED spring. Good karma after the cleanup!

Thanks to all the organizers, especially you Chris for coordinating our efforts today. And Dave, thsnks for the great job on my rod. Much appreciated. :)

Glad you like the rod Milo and it was great to see you again. :)
We had about 245 volunteers out today and they all left feeling good about what they accomplished.  Seeing families and their young kids attend these cleanups and the look on the kids’ faces when they come back with their bags of garbage, is one of my favorite parts of being involved in these events.   I can almost guarantee the kids attending these cleanups will never be like those they cleaned up after.
Like you I was surprised no one from this forum took you up on your offer to drive (and fish).  I remember a few years ago when we had many anglers attending the cleanups, every second guy was in waders .… now, for whatever reason, not so much.

I got a message from a forum member asking for a ride to the cleanup so don't give up hope just yet! It was great to meet another FWR user and we had some fun fishing afterwards. Also brought my dad.

Highlights of the day for me include:
-My dad winning a specialty poultry gift certificate (free duck!)
-Getting hooked in the shorts by a fisherman while picking up garbage because he was distracted by a helicopter
-Great BBQ lunch at the clubhouse
-Making a new FWR friend IRL
-Small selection of river treasure! A couple of nice hooks, a fly, and a micro USB to Lightning adapter :D

There are a lot of people in this town that $20 makes a huge difference to.
You work and have an income so im sure the $10 they charge for garden waste isn't a big deal to you but to others it is.
We pay enough taxes in this city that garbage pick-up should be included or at least have a dump site that is no charge.
Not only that but it would help with the Rat problems that we have.

A lot of guys I know have shopping bags in their vest and pick up whatever garbage they see, before they leave the flow.  One thing they have in common is they all do it quietly, and they do not boast.

That is great and we know many do that. By doing so it helps set an example to others when they see it being done but there is still too much garbage, line etc. left around that ends up drifting down river to  the Fraser and out to the ocean during high water events.

We and other volunteers cleaned up from Keith Wilson Bridge yesterday and it was clean as a whistle by noon. I went down last night and picked up a half a garbage bag that had been discarded since then. In a few days it will be littered again. It is not about boasting, it is just getting the job done and trying to make a difference.

Some stats the CVRCS has kept since 2002, coming up to yesterday's cleanup there has been 44 cleanups on the Chilliwack Vedder River watershed, 16 BC River Days, 110 Metric Tonnes of garbage collected and 28,000 plus volunteer hours put in. Factor in the hours the ones you mention there would be a lot more hours put in and garbage collected.

I hope those reading this will take your excellent  suggestion and take a bag of garbage out with them after fishing. Who knows one day we will not have to organize cleanups and we can just go fishing, which I think I will this morning and I will be picking up some garbage at the same time.

Thanks again for your post

I know some, too, but from the state of things, it's simply not enough. It appears that for every garbage cleaning angler, there are 10 who leave their garbage behind. I'm particularly miffed at the goo chuckers who seem to think it's OK to leave their empty roe containers at the bank.
Would be nice to see a 2000-dollar littering fine handed out to those. That would teach them.

Was out fishing at Squamish this weekend and was very happy with the state of affairs of the rivers we were on. We found a few lost items - but ZERO litter between the two systems - and this is at the end of the busiest Pink season I've seen yet. Refreshing to see.

We brought out everything we found - but in the end all we got was:
1 - Minn Kota C2 40
1 - Kit-a-mat spoon
1 - bit of line tangled around a rock
and NO Tim Horton's cups!

Cheers to all those that were out cleaning up this weekend - and an extra cheers to those that don't need cleaning up after - your mama taught you well.

Thanks to the Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Society for all their hard work for putting on another successful cleanup, Thanks also to the Chilliwack Fish Game Protective Association for hosting the events and doing the BBQ. Also thanks to all the sponsors of the prizes, Tim Hortons Chilliwack, Chilliwack Water Store, City of Chilliwack, First Class Waste/Alpine Valley Disposal and Fraser Valley Regional District. Also to the great volunteers who attended and cleaned up a lot of garbage. From the CVRCS FB page. "240 AWESOME volunteers removed 2820kg of garbage and 720kg of metal from the Chilliwack Vedder River Valley and the Chillwack Vedder River watershed."
