It'd be less nerve-wrecking to use a remote control boat. You can use a heavy braid line to maximize your chances reeling the boat back in if you lose control.

Actually I wonder if you even need remote control at all. You can just let a toy boat to drag your line out, and use the line to keep the boat in place.
