The grandiose romanticizing in old fly fishing books and journals can be nauseating;

"Around the steel no tortur'd worm shall twine, No blood of living insect stain my line; Let me, less cruel, cast feathered hook, With pliant rod athwart the pebbled brook, Silent along the mazy margin stray, And with fur-wrought fly delude the pray. When no feathers abound, I would tie a fly using the gingered pubic hair of my young maiden lover"
