Got these two average Starries this afternoon. Whiterock Pier. Lost a big sucker, straightend out a hook actually cut from a sabiki :-[ Probably better she went back to breed anyways. Shrimp for bait dragged on the bottom. Usually I'd do better because I can sight fish for them... but because of the swells I was blindly casting my way up and down the pier trying to cover as much bottom as possible. Lucky to get two at this time of the year I'd say. Tight lines :) (They will go to a friend... I don't consume this particular species from shallow waters... even I have my limits ;) )
-
Sharing from a good friend. He's currently doing missionary work in Paraguay and loving the fishing at the same time. He got this bad boy in a pond. It's an African Catfish.
He also catches them by hand. Apparently they get trapped in the ditches during floods and you just jump in and catch them by hand. Enjoy!

Agree with bigsnag.
These fish are so dumb they'll bite flagging tape tied to your hook... just gotta find one and get it in front of them. A 7 inch pink worms would most definitely work in higher water.

I think so. They are rainbow trout.

Right after taking this picture, he flipped the fish onto the beach, threw a bunch of sand on it to make a moving sand sculpture, then threw rocks at it to push it back into the water where it swam away appearing just fine.

Carp on a flyrod are not easy ... well done ;)

That carp looks absolutely shocked that you were able to fool it, and on a chironomid no less.

Nice to see it wetted for the pic and not laying on the beach :)
-
Thanks clarki..really helps to have the net on hand and some one to help with the photoshoot. There was a mom and her 2 young kids strolling on the beach at the time I was fighting and landing the fish..they enthusiastically helped with the netting..the kids were all super excited to see the fish which was cool. :)

Fair.
Backstory, the net I brought up sank while unhooking a fish from the yak. So I had to zip to Kamloops to get a new one, got out on the water before I took the tag off.

Tight lines and remember! Fish other than salmon exist... they might taste like cr@p in comparison but they're out there. ;)

My wife (Singaporean) does a meal like that but with more ginger and brown bean sauce....I'll take it over salmon (which we have a ton of) any day!

I don't post many photos here, but I thought I would share a couple of my favourite shots from my recent trips.

You skipping bar fishing season? :P Yea steamed sole especially when caught same day is delicious. I personally prefer them pan fried though.
We used to get quite a few sand sole off Belcarra but they were all small (7-10"). How did it compare to the rock sole? The tastiest small flatfish I've had recently was a pacific sanddab. Meat texture is firm and flaky, more like cod than most other pacific "sole". I can see now why they are a gourmet seafood item down in California.
-
I love pacific sand dab. Used to get them off my kayak off tsawassen. Delicious. Sand sole was good. It was a smaller size than the rock sole so the meat wasn't as firm, but still good. I'd have to say the rock sole was a bit better.
-
I'm waiting for Dolly season.
Edit: and after that my all time favourite: Herring Jigging Season. So stoked.\

Nice boxes :)

nice...
-
aaronwilde, I would say what you caught there is a really big Cutthroat trout! Usually identified by the jaw bone going past the eye.
-
That maxillary sure makes it look like a cutty. Nice fish :)
-
That maxillary sure makes it look like a cutty. Nice fish :)
That's what I was thinking - plus that yellow fin.
-
I vote cutty as well
-
Yup, I say monster cutty. Lots of spots below the lateral line, max extending beyond the eye. Clear fins are only indicative of anadromous.
Nicely done.
-
Looks like a Coastal cutthroat. Beautiful fish.
-
First thing we thought was Cutty but once I tailed it and checed under the chin for orange slashes there was no sign of any. Pure white under the gills. Shouldnt that mean Rainbow?
No. Many sea run cutts have no red or orange slash. Length of the maxillary is the best determination between cutthroat (extends past the eye) and rainbow (at or shorter than the eye).
-
I'm going with whitefish final answer.
-
5LB cutthroat trout in the Fraser Valley/ Lower Mainland are like unicorns!
-
5LB cutthroat trout in the Fraser Valley/ Lower Mainland are like unicorns!
Indeed!
5 lb'ish pounds, he said. So allowing for the Angler BS Factor, it is still a magnificent wild ct and a catch that most ct anglers will never see in their careers. Nice fish Aaron!
-
Looks to me like a HOG of a Cuttie. The max extending beyond the eye would indicate most likely a buck and less about species.
The yellow pectoral fin screams cuttie and the slash may or may not develop later in the year as they get closer to spawn.
I reserve the right to be wrong but, I'm jealous as HECK!
