So dropped by Stave today ......raining good but on and off. Not too crowded so I figure the wife and I would fish for a bit. Saw a CO just sitting in his truck near where I parked.
Lots of fish moving in the river ....2 casts in and got a Chum on a short floated jig. Was a bit dark...let it go....'nother one on a few casts later.... a nice clean male chum!! Was easy to tell, besides still being silvery, it was somewhat fresh as it was a really energetic fight. Kept it.
Got into quite a few more and kept the next good doe, it was pretty fresh too... got roe 'in the skein' ....Whoohoo
The wife and her pal make great fish cakes with chum...tasty good ...yumm!
So ya.... after a 1/2 hr or so a guy near me packs up.... takes a very full looking bag with him and heads off back to the road. Then about 20 mins later same guy comes back, moves further down past me to a different spot and starts fishing again....
I saw him catch at least 4-5 more fish, and he was bonkin and bagging them ...
Then behind me that same CO showed up on the grassy bank, waded across some water ( in his pants and boots ) to get to the bar we were on... I figure "Ok best get the license out I guess he is here to check everyone's" ... But no... he walked right past me and wife and least 4 other anglers and made a bee line right to that dude. After a short talk with him he was issuing tickets and emptying out the bag to see how many fish he had..... looked like at least 3 .
Then he escorted him back across the water and up the bank to the road and to his car....I'd hazard a guess that he wanted to check # of fish in his car.
I imagine that the CO prob saw the dude come to his car, drop off his catch and then go back down to the river with his gear. Then waited a while before heading down specifically so he would catch him with a few more ...

hopefully he ceased his truck and all his fishing gear and made him go down to the office to pick it up. Probably was nice tho and just wrote him a ticket. I think it's hilarious when DFO ceases all of the stuff.

Yeah, the lady CO who has the Mission beat (she's the only one according to her) and a partner she gets from the other offices have been down at the Stave a lot. They've been there the 3 or 4 times I've been there this season. Cool that he waded across and busted the poacher. I'd have thought waders would be part of their uniform.
Now if we could get them out to Richmond and I'm sure some of the other bars, as I've seen people quietly and quickly put very silvery fish into their trunks.

Awesome!

Feel good story of the day. Thanks for sharing. Seen both officers out previously on the east side, and issue $150 tickets for fishing with barbs. I think they are DFO rather than CO's.

Wouldn't that be great if there were enough officers to do that on a
Regular basis? Tkx for the report, you made my day👍
