Title: Crayfish?
Post by: fish fear me on May 09, 2016, 05:30:00 PM
a little while ago I found a dead crayfish at lafarge lake and its got me curious to try my hand at catching/cooking them just wondering if there's anywhere in the lower mainland with a substantial population of them. Any help would be much appreciated.

Most creeks in the lower mainland have them.

I've seen a local catch them in a triangle crab trap off a pier with chicken in the Tidal Fraser. He was actually getting a good amount. Give it a go, you never know :)

We used to catch tons in bear creek. Just wade in and grab them

Most of Bear Creek is closed to fishing so I don't know if it's even open to taking crayfish.

I have had them in the past they are delicious & very comparable to lobster. Traps or lights & dip nets at night are techniques I am aware of.

Thanks for the help. in the tidal Fraser are they pretty widespread the easiest spot for me to access is around deering island do you think that
that area is ok. also are they edible from the Fraser i figure you wouldn't want to eat them too much. as for creeks I'm not sure were to start maybe brunette river. And is a trap like this good? http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Crawfish-Trap/product/1402171635/?cm_sp=Display2014retar_DIS (http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Crawfish-Trap/product/1402171635/?cm_sp=Display2014retar_DIS) . might try cultus lake during the summer. Sorry so many questions just never new they were around thanks.

I had a buddy get a good amount of them on the Vedder once when fishing for coho was slow. I never knew there were so many around until I was actually looking for them.

Look for structure.
They like to hide under rocks, submerged logs, snags and such.

Deer Lake, Trout Lake, most of the streams around the lower mainland. Most lakes on Vancouver Island.
