Do what I did as a kid, I would head up there not knowing.
If the ice is thick enough, drill a hole (if you have an auger, or a hatchet lol) Or if it is thin, pack a rope, tie it to a rock and huck it out there off of the dock or shore where ever you want to fish and make some 'channels'. Cast out and drag your bobber or bottom rig into the channel.
It is surprisingly effective. Or just walk around and find some gaps if there are any.
Easier to know ahead though, of course.
