Hello all, Any suggestions for affordable pink spinning setups thanks.
-
I guess right now lead + hook with wool or heavy buzzbomb
-
Go to Berry's they have pink salmon spinning setups starting at $69 with line. 8.5' with a 4000 reel on it.
-
Depends on your method of fishing. If you're fishing somewhere with slow/no current all you need is a basic spinning setup to throw spoons or whatever your preferred lure may be. I use a 6'6 Ugly Stick and an Abu Garcia Cardinal neither of which cost me more than $50.
-
If you are spinning in the lower Fraser any $30 to $50 combo at Army ad Navy or Canadian tire will likely suffice for pinks. In the chuck the salt water may do a number on the reel.
-
For $25 I'll sell you a Shimano Stradic & a Daiwa rod 8' or so-all you need/downtown Vancouver.

thanks for the info guys does anybody know if army and navy put line on reels because i was planning on hit the mouth of the capilano after
-
thank you for the info

Don't get anything less then 8' if your casting from shore, it will help for casting distance. add some 20lb braid and the 6'6" rod guys will watch with envy when you cast to the school, and they are about 20' short lol

20lbs is overkill , I use 10 lbs braid , and have 2 rods 7-0 and 10-0 . not too much diffirence between casting them . I doubt you can beat me with 8+ rod and 20lbs braid vs my 7 foot .

Ya, I can beat you. Haha
20lb so I get my spinner or spoon back from a snag. 10lb can't open hooks.
-
i think ill go with 15 lb braid lol
-
i have a 10 ft meaduim heavy okuma rod that could land any fish in bc rivers but i tried fishing for pinks last year and its hard to cast out to schools

why fish in snaggy area ? I spent quiete a lot of time checking fraser on low tides .... for last 2 months I lost 1 spoon and it was at Seymour mouth , none at fraser . if you afraid of snags I can borrow you my sturgeon rod 12 feet and 100lbs line :)))

get a light rod . fast action :D don't need to be 10feet .

If you have a light 6'6 rod and know how to use it you can cast as far as you need (halfway across any given tributary of the Fraser) just fine and you'll get a better fight out of a pink than with a big ol' river rod.

Agree 100%. One of my favorite setups is a 6ft outfit rated 10lb test with a little stiffness so it can cast spoons nicely. It was an inexpensive Quantum outfit my Dad bought for me as a Birthday Present from Canadian tire - used if for years for trout and pinks and it casts beautifully.

:D yeah, try to convinse canso :)))))

No? ;)
For pink salmon in the Tidal Fraser River, 8 or 9' are my personal preference. While I can cast pretty far with a 6' setup too, 8' or 9' just works better for casting, playing the fish, landing the fish.

LOL Rod u made my day :D

From my dozens of rods, yes plenty of 6'6 rods, most for the kids some for twitching jigs, my favourite set-up for casting to pinks (and coho) is a Medium fast 8'6" 4-10lb rod with a 2000 reel. The noodle tip on a fast action rod makes for a wild ride.
Same reason we like our fly rods, long, fast action.
Go to Berry's and buy one of there pink salmon fishing rods, they have been well thought out, by professionals.
they come in price ranges starting at $69. These rods were put together just for pink fishing.
I bought 2 more as spare coho rods in the boat, my buddies hate there "Canadian tire trout rods" after they use mine.
The 20lb braid just makes it multi purpose, like I said before, it's the same rod and reel I use for casting to coho in frog water.
-
I don't use braid for coho , I have my cp with 15lb mono , or my baitcaster with 15 lb mono , my leaders are 8 lbs . I use braid only for sturgeon , or casting spoons on my spinning set-up and I tie 4 to 8lbs mono(about 3 feet) to my 10lbs braid

Oh, hey! Hit me up mid. Oct. when all the pink madness is over.
First light coho, mid morning chum on the pin then afternoon sturgeon till your arms fall off. On me, for real.

no problems , can I borrow that rod for sturgy ? :D

My favourite pink/coho setup is 8'6" 6-12lb Med-fast with 2500 reel spooled with 8lb 0.010mm mono, casts a mile and I am very happy with it, have handled chums as well :D
I gave some thought of switching to braid for better hooksets and sensitivity but was told that braid would cut trough the porcelain guides over time. Anyone had a similar experience before?

I've been using braid for the last 4 or 5 years and I do believe it is harder on guides and I suspect it picks up more grit than mono. However my guides have been fine so far, so I personally have no direct evidence of increased wear and tear. Even if I go through a set of guides every 5-10 years i would still use it for the reasons you list. That's just the cost of doing business IMHO

it depends if your guides got ceramic insides or not , I have problem with my old sturgeon rod , but I was using 65lb braid on it I casted 20oz weights :) on my spinning setup I use 10 lb braid for over a month , and I fish every weekends with it - and no ceramic guides and so far look pretty neat .

When I am not fly fishing (quick stop on the roadside or when no room for back cast), I still use my son's spinning outfit he was given at one of Rod's fishing the future events in Steveston. It's a 6' 6" Shakespeare Mantis Combo spooled with 8 pound mono. I can chuck a 1/8 croc as far as I have ever needed to (clear across any trib of the Fraser) and it is a great fight with pinks, but has the backbone for for larger coho.
