Hey guys, I'm fairly new to sturgeon fishing. Just wondering what to wait for when setting the hook on a sturgeon. I'll be fishing from shore. Any tips or anything would be much appreciated! Cheers! ;D

Usually when I fish from shore for sturgeon I wait for a long slow pull rather then the quick taps you will get from smaller fish.

X2 let it bury the tip.

I fish from shore too , but I always watch my rod and keep it position so I can grab it any time (lift up) and you can feel hits , also you can see your tip going up and down , so I usually set the hook up when after up position tip is star going down again . For me to set a hook is the actual fun , but like other guys said you can wait until it got it for sure ))

Not from shore, but here's how not to do it.

That's funny. That video explains exactly why you let the sturgeon bury the rod first. So many coarse fish pecking at the bait all the time. You will know when it's a sturgeon.

I let the rod dance in the holder and watch it see how it's dancing.if it's only the first 2 or 3 guides that dance I'll leave it.when the 3rd or 4th guide closer to the backbone starts dipping that's where I set the hook.

When sturgeon are tasting your bait, they suck it in, and blow it out, over and over again. When the rod tip goes down (sucking in) you pull up, but if your too slow you need to stop yourself(he blew it out), and wait till the rod dips again (sucking in).
In time you will learn what course fish look like and what sturgeon look like.
Some times I see the line rubbing there spine, bounce...bounce...bounce...bounce with the same intervals.
Hard to explain, go fishing, you will figure it out with more experience.
