I was out Tuesday last week and the visibility was at best 6 inches. Has anybody noticed any improvement this weekend?
-
I was out yesterday and it hasn't gotten any better.
-
I'm guessing this years low vis is caused by the low/no snowpack. The icefields are draining through a bunch of silt instead of over snow and then forest soil.
-
Try to fish at Furry Creek. Lots of action. Almost everybody caught a limit.
-
You can easily catch pinks with 6" of clarity.
-
^^^ this and think ugly green.

Don't know about the rest of you but so far I am seeing way less fish than 2013. It's almost hard work getting them compared to 2 years ago :)
-
i still managed to get my 2 fish, there are quite a bit and snagging them was easy but i managed to get my two keepers within an hr or so
-
For those of you who are catching fish in the squamish what are you using to catch fish? Im going up to squamish soon and would like to know please. Im bringing spoons, jigs and flys.
-
Spoons, jigs and flies all produce.
If something isn't working, change it up .

Yeah, it's not going to be as crazy as two years ago. 2013 was not a normal run. There's lots of time left in the run.

LOL, you guys must be doing something wrong... I landed over 20 this incoming tide today. Pink woolly buggers an colorado blades.
-
Well thanks all. I actually went out there today and I can tell you that you that many of you were dead wrong. The visibility was quite a bit better than last week and continued to improve as I was fishing - it went up to about a foot which I can tell you made all the difference :)
TheLostSockeye asked what those who are catching are using and, from my own experience, and from watching others fly fishing seems to outperform the other techniques. I can only think it is because the very slow strip retrieve keeps the presentation in front of the fish longer and gives them more time to see it when the water clarity is less than stellar. Bubble gum pink or very flourescent chartreuse flies were dynamite for me today.
Just holding a float below you in the current with one of these flies behind it would work just as well I am sure. Main thing is not to have the fly going down to deep or failing to sink at all - you would need a little weight to get it down but not snagging the bottom. At times, all I needed to do was simply hold the fly in the current below me until a fish swims by. Not sure how well larger presentations such as spoons would do with the same technique - maybe just as well but I didn't try them.

Haven't had any issues either the fishing was slow going last few weeks but still got fish every trip and it's even better now ;D

Does the clarity improve above the mamquam? I've been up throwing spoons around but with the 6" vis its been tough. May try new tactics soon...

Were you fishing the incoming tide? Also were other people catching?

Yes fishing the incoming. We did manage a few fish, just wondering of there was an area that the clarity is normally better.

Only about 4-6" vis on the Mam today, down from about 18" monday evening. Caught and released a lot of pinks on short floated blades, (went 16 for 34). Had a surprise catch of a big beautiful bull trout of 6-8 pounds, my little brother thought he was fighting a small spring until I waded out to release his fish said "Holy s... it's a big bull!" Saw a lot of fouled and fair fish being dragged 10 feet up the rocks then kicked back in to the river, so just remember pinks aren't the only fish that could be on the end of your line right now in this system.
-
Regardless of the type of fish, pink or not, there is no excuse for abusing fish in that manner. Of course, many people don't know any better. That's one of the reasons I wear waders during the summer so I can get into the water with the fish to release it.

I know, I told one guy, who was literally kicking his pinks off the bank into the river to clean up his act because it was pretty damn disgusting. I don't get how people have so much of an issue of walking 2 feet into the water where it is only like 8" deep to pop the hook out especially on the mam where it's not even cold nor slippery, it would seem easier than beaching the fish and trying to get the hook out of a fish flailing on the rocks. Not to mention anyone who has half a brain should know that being dragged up and banged on rocks probably isn't too beneficial for the fish.

Overnight rain has blown the river out. Up 3-4 feet from last weekend. Vis was 3 inches at best in the spot I was fishing. Better on the Mamquam but there seemed like more fishermen than fish! Good to see DFO out there checking so make sure you are up to date on the regs guys n gals

One guy downstream of me was being ticketed and I heard from others it was for using multiple or treble hooks? On a side note, does a clear drennan float matter in that murky 3 to 6 inches of visibility of water? The guy beside me was using a clear float vs my foam float and he had way more bites than I did.

I very much doubt it. I doubt it would make any difference in crystal clear water. Some fish like pinks and chum are just not leader shy or bothered by weights of floats.
