Title: Commercial fishing hole in sockeye run
Post by: VAGAbond on August 21, 2014, 04:22:06 PM: Just wondering how long it takes the hole in the run created when the commercial folks net from Sandheads to Mission to move past Hope. (How long does a typical sockeye take to get from Sandheads to Hope?). I think I saw this information recently but can't find it.

I have read that they travel 28 miles/day ocean. Against the valley current they make what, half that?

Post by: RalphH on August 21, 2014, 08:08:18 PM: check the PSC test fishery numbers for Cottonwood and Whonnock. I have found that 60 or more per set yields reasonable fishing from Chilliwack to Hope within a day or 2. It depends on the length of the opening and the strength of the run.

Started to pick up again around 5:00pm.

This is exactly it. Nothing from 3pm-5pm for me. By 5:20 I was on my way home with both fish.

I didn't believe you when I first saw this, but it's true. Combined with a FN economic opening the day before.... good bye next week.
