Title: Mamit Lake, July 7th 2014
Post by: Rodney on July 08, 2014, 12:35:39 PM
We did a quick day trip to Mamit Lake yesterday, fished from 10am to 3pm. It was pretty calm throughout the entire day so it made moving around easier in the small boat. The only down side was that the absence of breeze made the heat unbearable.

There's a fairly thick algae bloom in the lake, but we managed to hook around 20 rainbow trout. Most fish were between 14 and 18 inches long, the odd ones were 20 inches long. Beside rainbows, we encountered northern pikeminnow as usual and caught a new species which I did not think we'd ever see in it, a rather big mountain whitefish.

All fish were caught in around 15 feet of depth, fished size 12 bomber under the indicator which was set at around 10 to 12 feet.

That is a massive whitefish!  I have only driven by Mamit ... is it connected to any streams?  just wondering how that guy got in the lake and if others have caught them there.

Dave, I've already asked Bassie about it so waiting for a reply. I spent most of last night trying to figure out if it is a mountain whitefish or a lake whitefish. Province's fish inventory queries only show mountain whitefish listed at Mamit Lake, so I'm assuming that it is... It was the biggest specimen I've ever seen and I was more excited about that than all the other rainbows we caught. Incoming email!

I have only seen a few Lake Whitefish, most from Little Shuswap Lake.  Your first picture looks like it could be a Laker, as it is so deep and thick but the email photo you later sent sure looks like a RMW.  Please keep us informed and say hi to you know who from Arleen and I!

Not an expert, but the nose looks too short for a mountain whitefish.

I know a couple guys who target the whitefish in that lake and do quite well. Catching them in the 2-3lb range at times.

I guess not as uncommon as I first thought. ;) The Master emailed back and said they were catching quite a few up to 2.5lb back in early spring.

Nice report Rod. Man, I sure miss fishing in that lake.  Before I had kids....before I got married....before I did grad school..... I had time to visit Mamit. It was a great lake for rainbows. Not super big fish but a great lake to learn how to fish chronnies and to fart around...

guichon creek to Nicola river
Nicola river to Thompson river

but there is a dam on mamit where guichon drains it.

that probably at one time how the whitey got in there via guichon.  I see lots in guichon creek over the years.  never caught one in the lake though.  very neat!

Smooooth skin, too!  Just lovely!

I've fished Mamit a few times but have never encountered anything but rainbows in the lake.  Maybe they only bite in the late afternoon.  I usually get blown off by then.  LOL
