Was out today for 4 hours starting around 7:30am.
I hooked into a nice one but my hook set caused my main line to be tangled up with tree branches behind me.
By the time I got it off, the fish got off.
I think it was a bit slower today. I only saw a small one taken on the other side of the river.

I started in the canal at first light nothing for the first hour decided to drive up through Yarrow and parked at the dike the spot I was at was really busy with about 10 guys below and a good 7-9 guys on the other side up river from me.
I went up above the guys on my side and started chucking my prawn working my way down, the fly guys moved out and made my way down to the log and on my third cast fish on!
After a couple minutes of fighting a nice hatchery buck came to hand and off to enter it into the derby. It weighed just over 6lbs I will get the pic soon.
-
nice. i just weighed in a 10.9 lb buck today too.

cough, cough, flossed. Or did you just plant the hook that way for the photo op?
Very nice fish - always a prize on the fly.

Pretty sure the stinger hook is buried inside the mouth (looks like the point of it sticking out above the maxillary).

Cough, cough... shove foot in mouth. If you click on the pic and goto his photobucket full res image you'll see that it's perfectly in the scissors of the jaw, with the hook on the inside. 8)

I don't know what you're worried about - that looks perfect to me. I would be proud of that catch any day on a fly. To me, catch and release of Steelhead go hand in hand. Look at the clarity of the water - to catch a Steelhead on the fly in that water is a dream. So jealous - I think it's been three years since I've caught a Steelhead even close to that size on the fly. Congrats - that's a prize wild catch. So nice to have that memory recorded with pictures.

actually the hook is buried inside its mouth in its tongue. bastard had some decently sized nasty razor teeth so my dad needed to use forceps to get the hook after the fish chomped down on my fingers when I tried :'(
It took the hook ferociously and went on a huge run, came in a little then another huge blistering run, did that once more then just dogged fought me until finally coming to hand. Best battle I have gotten from a steelhead yet, gear or fly :D
P.S. - the clarity wasn't as good as in the pic. by shore yes but maybe 4 feet at best in the main flow. perfect clarity for steelhead
I wasn't fully happy about how far my hook ended up in its mouth. I try my very best to make my trailer hooks only just long enough to swap out hooks and yet this got dangerously close to where the gills/tongue join. Mostly because I think he tried to swallow the entire thing which I can't help.
I will continue to use the flies I have in my box however I will starting to tie them either on tubes or rig them like Ed Ward does with his Intruders on a shank but use micro tubing to hold the hook. Last thing I want is to have a fish bleed out and I will try and prevent that as best I can

They do that when the hook gets in the tongue, they don't like one bit. Coho do the same.
