Title: Tip for getting rod unstuck.
Post by: Gooey on January 19, 2014, 07:20:21 AM
Ever go to pack up at the end of the day and you can't get your rod apart?  I had a 4 piece rod that hadn't been fully broken down in ages and the top 2 pieces seemed seized.  I sprayed wd40 down the shaft even…nothing work until I tried a lower tech approach.

Half the issue was not being able to get a good grip.  Wrapping a bunch of masking tape wraps around the blank built up its diameter which allowed me to get a good grip and take the two pieces apart.

Heat, ice, repeat.

Sometimes its taken as many as 10 iterations, but its always worked for me. I'll have to try your approach next time, could save me some time.

There was an EXCELLENT thread on this a while back, but I can't find it with a search in the archives. If you try an assortment of key words your bound to find it. Also were some good tips on preventing your rod from becoming stuck in the first place.

A can of compressed air for cleaning keyboards etc. Sprayed upside down will vertually freeze your blank in seconds allowing you to pull it appart. Will work better than any other method.

My method is simple and easy, buy you a vaseline pure petroleum jelly , take a little bit on the  tip of your finger and rub the bottom of each part before sliding them together,  they come appart slick , nice and easy ,,, try is it works perfect.

I just rub a candle all over the ends once in awhile.
Works great and the pieces still lock down tight.
Before I did this, I got a 2 piece rod real stuck. Someone told me to put the rod behind my knees, and put hands on outside edge of knees holding the rod pulling with arms and using my knees to push outward on my wrists. Looks funny, worked for me.

Rub the male part of the ferrul on your forehead or beside your nose. There is natural oil there and will prevent sticking. You always have your face with you.

Yup the trick is ice.i bought a bag of ice and poked a hole in each end and carefully slid my rod in untill the ferrull was in the middle of bag. Left it for an hour and just like what has already been said it came apart like s*hit through a goose.!!!!!

X2   That is my method.  You have to do it before the rod gets stuck.

making sure there is no sand on your rod before putting it together definitely can help preventatively, but as others have said, hot water then ice works well
