Is there one this year ? In past years there's always a thread about the steelhead derby. Nothing this year. Just wondering.
-
Yes there is a Boxing Day derby this year. You attending f.a.?
-
Oh ya its on!!!!!!!! 8)
-
Yea Magz! I sure hope there's more fish in the river on Boxing Day, than there is now. There hasn't been a steelhead weighed in yet at Fred's tackle in the Wally h. Derby. You going in the derby Magz?
-
Im trying to get a couple guys together as we speak.took my brother out years ago in the boxing day derby.he was down from yellow knife.we got 7 fish. He got 5 of them. Cldnt believe it. Ive bn skunked ever since on derby day :-\
-
A lot of Derbies have been cancelled in recent yrs, Im wondering if this one has run its course. I just don't see the point of a derby in todays world. Just puts more pressure on the resource, for what? Bragging rights?

I will be there. And no not for bragging rights.
Pressure on the resource? What the hatchery clones? I would be concerned if it was a river with mostly wild stock and not the Vedder. That river could be fished into extinction and brought back by the hatchery. I highly doubt there's any truly wild fish left in there. If it was a derby on the Thompson, that would be different.
-
The Chilliwack River Boxing Day Derby will be on once again of course. I'm just waiting for the Fish and Games Club to email me the details before posting.
-
Whos talking about bragging rites anyway. Its the vedder gimme a break.theres no more than a hand full off fish weighed in and about as many guys go in it. I thought it was for fun and some good times with friends and sometimes family thats in town .no more no less.
-
In todays combat world of Vedder fishing I think "Boxing day" is a good name.

Just because no one brings a fish to freds dosn't mean there arent fish in the system. Us locals want to keep a slow start becuase of over crowding. always jan/feb/mar to weigh in

While I agree that a steelhead derby on a hatchery-enhanced river such as the Vedder is probably not a big deal from a conservationist point of view, it is the derby mentality that bugs me. In a derby, it's all about the numbers, about competition, and with that come certain attitudes that I don't really appreciate. Take a look at one of those American fishing channels and you'll get the idea. I shudder to think what would happen if we had a steelhead fishing circuit taking place in BC. :-\
But different strokes for different folks. If you really need a derby to go out and have fun with friends and family, go for it, by all means.
-
Derby is almost the wrong word for this event. It is more of a steelhead gathering, and just neat to see some early season chrome and camraderie. Last year I popped one off after a short battle, and asked the next guy that came by if he wanted a shot at it after I told him what had happened. I'm not very competitive about it, and I feel that most folks on the river dont have the "bassmasters" mentality. Comparing Steelheaders to bass anglers isn't much of a comparison.

Yah, bassmasters have faster boats. ;D

Well I'd like to educate you people who are against the Boxing Day derby. First of all , all the proceeds go toward steelhead enhancement . Secondly, all fish that are caught are hatchery fish, which are genetically inferior to wild fish . Thirdly are you also against people having some fresh hole some meat to consume , instead of this crap you buy in stores?
-
Well I'd like to educate you people who are against the Boxing Day derby.
I am not against the Boxing Day derby. I am against fishing derbies. Period.

All fishing derby's!? regardless of hatchery/wild fish contests, fresh/salt? there are some pretty cool derby's out there to be against all of them.
Humans are competitive by nature, derby's and leader boards allow people to use this competitive nature in order to get out, work hard and have a good time
-
Sorry I spelt wholesome wrong, on my previous post. I guess I'm not perfect like some people here.
-
Brian the fisherman , of course there's fish in the system , but they're scarce at the moment. As the season progresses that will change . When there are no steelhead weighed in , other than a couple of fishers who weren't registered. That's a pretty good indication of the numbers. I too am a local fisherman. I've fished the vedder for over 50 years. My dad, born in 1904 in chilliwack , fished the vedder all his life. My grandfather fished the vedder in the 1800s. As a pioneer family of chilliwack , we do know something about the river.
-
Well boxing day is almost here and there has been little to no advertising for this event unlike in years past. Has anyone got any info besides the obvious that it is on boxing day?
-
I do not, but I will go anyways, and if there is no derby, I'll just fish anyways ;D
-
I would like to attend this years derby. How much is the derby fee? Where can I purchase it? And can I buy it online as I will be in Vancouver?
-
There are usually advance tickets available at a few tackle stores, but I just get mine the morning of the derby, at the Chilliwack fish and game club.
-
I've sent in another request for this year's derby information.
In the meantime, here's information from last year's derby. No changes are expected for this year, so I have been told.

70th Chilliwack River Boxing Day Steelhead Fishing Derby update! Five fish have been weighed in so far. Largest fish was brought in by Wade Dean, weighing 12.87lb. The first fish of the day, 11.83lb, was weighed in at 9:12lb.
Thanks Chris for phoning in to provide the updates! :)
-
Congratulations Wade what a beauty, and way to go Sugartooth with the 5.8 lb er. I woulda loved that mug. I only took the low holed award
-
Well another derby in the books. Wasn't quite as busy as recent years and only 7 fish. My dad managed his first steely in 15 years! Great day! The 70th annual Boxing Day Redder River Steelhead Derby organized by the Chilliwack Fish & Game Protective Association is in the books with 331 anglers out on the Chilliwack Vedder River in quest of the Ferguson Furnell Perpetual trophy.
The anglers were treated to mild temperatures and ideal water conditions but the hatchery steelhead proved to be a scare commodity for this derby through the length of the event to the 2 PM deadline as only 7 fish were brought to the scales. However there was the usual reports of wild fish taken and fish lost, there even was a report of around a 18 pound wild taken.
When the results of the derby were tallied by derby chairman Mel Dureen and his volunteers it was angler Wade Dean, with his King fish of 12.87 pounds taking home the coveted Ferguson Furnell perpetual trophy. Dean who said he took his fish on roe had it on the scales at 10:48 so he had a few hours to pace to see if any other angler would knock him off the top rung.
The closest fish to the winner was a 11.73 pound steelhead taken by Earl Berry in second place although the first fish entered, at 9:12 by Edward Riel was .10 heavier at 11.83 pounds but an angler can only claim one prize so Berry was awarded second place.
The smallest fish taken was just over 5 pounds at a weight of 5.27 with Nelson Rodrigues the winner of that category.
Other anglers with fish were, Cameron Underhill 11.54, Steve Roseboom 9:02 pounds and Mark Dyck rounding out the anglers catching a steelhead weighing 8.69 pounds.
Many unsuccessful anglers won an array of prizes donated by supportive local stores. Club president and derby organizer Mel Dureen said "it was another successful derby with funds raised helps contribute to fish and wildlife habitat conservation projects in the coming year."
PS
Pictures to follow later when Rodney reviews what I sent him. Yes I did fish but was skunked like a lot of others but did win a derby draw prize. ;D

Yes from the report I got, was caught just over the hill from your place. ;D
-
A few of my friends went out and one of them got a 7lb hatchery on his second cast. He was not in the derby.
I am sure more fish were caught but not weighted in.
